My soldiers feel the need to name their totally unremarkable axes and shields.

Besides, I tried to do your trick, but unless I could get the engraver over there (Which I can't, the water is washing him away), the water will continue to pour since it's an aquifier.
Aquifers contain an infinite amount of water, yes.
But because they contain an infinite amount of water, they can hold an infinite amount of water.
The water level won't rise above the floor the aquifer is on unless things are really weird in your fort.
I found one recently in my fort, as well, but due to some quick thinking on my part, I now have a safe, monster-free source of clean water that will never run out. (Built a floodgate, dug out a spot for a well and nearby ramp on the floor above) There's also space in the floors below for hundreds of water-wheels, so when I get around to needing power, I have an infinite amount if I can get a pump stack to pull the water back up to the level.

I'm combining the cavern challenge with my hunter gatherer challenge. No farming, no metal, no use of surface resources. I will trade only with dwarven caravans and only for booze. I recently discovered that Glowfrogs (genesis) are a little bit badassed. One started interrupting work orders but my militia commander didn't have a bow yet but I sent her to kill it anyway figuring "Hey, it's a damn frog she'll probably kick it once and then haul it to the butcher shop. I can only imagine what the dwarves thought watching the commander walk off to battle only to come tumbling down the stairs a moment later covered in bruises, with six shattered fingers, and spewing vomit all over the ground. Eventually it bit a miner (shattering another finger) who had absolutely no time for that frogs bullshit and murdered it with a pickaxe.

Things in canyonmartyrs are going well, the winding path from z -51 to the surface is done, and and Depot at the bottom of it is accessible, it overlooks the highest point of magma on the map, and is in front of the only remaining entrance to my fortress (All above-ground entrances, and the entrances from the higher caverns, have been walled off). Traders, invaders, and beasts from the surface have no choice but to descend the 51 levels to the lowest cavern.

There have been two forgotten beasts, one is still trapped in the 2nd cavern layer playing with troglodytes waiting for an entrance to open [not going to happen]. the other was a blob with wings and fire... of 10 marksdwarves only 2 survived, it only took 3 bolts to kill it, but it breathed fire and caught all but the two most experienced marksdwarves in the blaze. I hope to get some replacements before the next beastie or invader arrives, having a 2 dwarf military, and no traps, is not an ideal position right now. On the plus side, we have begun production of steel from the bituminour coal and hematite veins, and soon should have armour and weapons truly worthy of a dwarf military.

In the mean time, the stoneworkers are smoothing every inch of the fortress, and churning out marble blocks at record rates. Meanwhile, the smiths are making copper sarcophagi and nickel furniture.

Got my first "forgotten beast" underground. A feathered slug. Lovely.

Somehow the dwarves placed an Armor Stand where a Door should go.
It's at the bed condos, and I have no idea how that happened. Must be someone's practical joke.

And I dug out the Magma Forge's fuel supply  to resemble a pitchfork. Works pretty well actually.

I have, or rather, had a miner. His hunchbacked son HNNNNGGGG-ed the moment he reached the fortress. His slow daughter was later snatched by goblin. His wife was killed by a wolf when he was complaining about the nasty water nearby. He flipped out, strangled a siege operator to death and mined a horse to his doom then grumpily went back to work. Learning of the news, the exp leader personally delivered justice when he was on his shift, breaking an arm and a leg. The whole fort were full of selfish bastards and no one wanted to carry him back for treatment. He lied there in the mine, hopelessly look as people came to work then went away, totally ignored him. In the verge of death, he berserked and attacked his own people. To be more precise, he tried. With a leg less, he was run circles around and laughed at. Soon, he departed, probably looking to exact vengeance on the cruel gods in his afterlife.

Are you going to bury him, or will you let him get his vengence? If you're not going to bury him, you maybe should let him lie where he died, so that the first thing he'll do is annoy the others with the miasma of his dead body.

Tenth year in my bustling surface fort of some 140 dwarfs. Kiloproject earthenware cathedral nearing completion.
A dragon appears and begins to lay waste to my barony. Apparently unaffected by traps (Genesis Mod?).
Down to ~50 dwarfs. Burning grass and food barrels.
Game glitches. Time to revert to my seasonal save. The universe seems to smile.

I built a caste fort, skilled craftsmen work in a fancy above ground fortress, miners and unskilled stone workers live in a subterranean fortress, skilled metal workers live in the caverns and garbage dwarves (useless skills or skills below proficient) aren't allowed inside the fortress. One day I got a grand master weaver migrant with two stupid useless kids. Weaver gets in kids are left outside. The weaver refuses to work, he won't weave, he won't haul, he won't even partake of our stash of fine booze. I give and let his useless kids inside, he still won't work. So finally I decide that if he wants to be a lazy douche he can earn it, I give him a sword and tell him to kill the elephant that slaughtered two migrants. If he wins he's got a free ride for life. He obeys this time and marches out proudly sword in hand and c ases down a bull elephant. With all of his might- in a feat of prowess that will be remembered for ages- he strikes the beast in the skull with the pommel of his sword bruising the fat and ... well that's it. The elephant immedately gores his leg off and walks away. The weaver laid there, dwarves continued to bring him food and water but they wouldn't treat him. He just laid there missing a leg for about a season. Finally I had a tomb built around him and built a bonfire inside, he was granted a viking funeral. His daughter threw a tantrum and attacked a woodcutter who promptly spilled her guts and left her to die, his son went insane in the garbage dwarf barracks and one of the slobs was made a captain to take care of him. The two fought for days, when the dust settled the captain was blind in one eye, he was missing a tooth, his nose was broken, one of his thumbs was broken and his phallus was covered in bite marks but the child was dead. Both bodies were placed in the tomb and an artifact amulet was placed inside with them and another fire was lit. Since artifacts don't take damage the fire never went out. Legends say that somewhere in the dwarven ruins of thronebridge there's a forever burning tomb that acts as the final resting place of a very odd family.

my first thought was indeed letting him having his vengeance but I reconsidered. He lied there still, yes, but probably no miasma or ghost will come of it because I modded out miasma and use runesmith to clean up unit list on a regular basis.
