My militia beekeeper just made such a useful artifact:
Trailedglittered, a galena bed (base value 20400)
"It is encrusted with galena and encircled with lead.
On the item is an image of Sodel Thunderchamber in galena. Sodel is surrounded by the dwarves. The artwork relates to the ascension of the dwarf Sodel Thunderchamber to the position of lady of The Insightful Fence in 92."

I like this more than the Spiked Buffalo Bone Ball I got from my last mood.

The Commander of my Militia just had his leg ripped off by an enraged Guinea-Pig. Fortunately, we've got a Legendary Dining Room and some really top-quality booze, so he's ecstatic. He's crawling around the fort on his belly, dead drunk and singing.

A peaceful 8th year so far in Divine Tower.  The obsidian casting room nears completion.  Some extra pasture space was roofed for the ever-expanding sheep herd.  and the spinning dervish continues to perform in the Arena. (A goblin Axe Lord who was allowed to retain his iron armor.  My least-experienced marksdwarf unit shot at him for a month with wood and bone bolts without putting a scratch on him.)

The third spoilerite spire is hollow - sorry clowns, we know that trick.

And a new FB has appeared - a mutant ninja tortoise made of prase opal!  And he has invaded the Big Top!   :o

Oh no, it's getting worse! Anyone who's been paying attention to my fort's story knows that I accidentally caused the volcano my fort was built into to start spewing out lava, which poured down the mountain to flood the (conveniently located) entrance to my fort, causing widespread death and destruction which ended only when I evacuated all my dwarves out onto the grass, planning to build a new fort out there.

Well, the lava's pretty much completely filled my fort and is still coming out of the volcano... It's just hit the large flat area my dwarves are mostly on, and is creeping towards their makeshift wooden shelter. D:
Also, the farms have burst into flames, just when a starving dwarf (Yeah, the food piles went up early on) was busy cramming prickle berries into his mouth. :( Farewell, Shorast Theaterwrung, we hardly knew ye!

My idea of tapping the murky pools to obsidianize the lava had some limited success, but I'm afraid it's too little, too late... Now our only hope is that the expedition leader can dig a channel to block the lava from reaching us, but it's hit-and-miss...

Edit:
From the Journal of Oddom Ralmat, Weaver of Lisidoddom, 19th Malachite 169
We may yet live! Our home is destroyed, many are dead and the deadly tide of lava pushes ever onwards towards us; but we may yet live, thanks to the tireless efforts of our brave leader, Rith Stelidast. She is like a dwarf posessed as she carves out chunks of the ground, despite her thin frame, so the water may flow from the pools to block the lava's path. With grim determination she works, for if she fails, we die.
Even lazy Zuglar has finally realised this is a matter of life and death, and lends her bulging muscles to the cause.
From my position up here in the trade depot, just above the fortress' stricken entrance, I can see the lava streaming red-hot down the mountain to the plains, and looking up I see ever more of it slowly making its way down, down the steep slope.
I have attempted a few sketches, in the hope that they give some indication of the situation's magnitude:

A goblin ambush descended on Drunkensteels when the elves arrived. They were soundly beaten- the second dwarf of my 2 Hammerlord squad, Catten Bootpleat the Inky Torch of Yells defeated a squad of swordsgoblins by himself, taking only a bruise to his upper right arm. Those seven kills got him up to 18, on par with my militia commander (who helped mop up the second squad.) Not to be outdone, Signun Boulderprairies the Tight Hawk not only helped drive back two squads of goblins who decloaked to the north (he scored two kills, largely because he was too busy dodging bolts to beat the rest of the military to the scene,) but he also then OUTRAN A COUGAR to chase down and kill one of the stragglers, putting him atop the Kill Count with 19 notable kills. Signun is perhaps my favorite military dwarf- he has no friends, one cat, and more kills than you can shake a stick at.

In a bid to make my countess happy, I've given her temporary use of the Enrichment Center Chambers in the caverns. In a bid to boost room quality, I've started making more statues. Most of them are of my dwarves killing goblins, or being killed by beak dogs, or various other fortress events, but one of them is rather strange.

This is a bronze statue of Ostok Foldstandard the Beak Dog. Ostok is laboring. This statue relates to the settling of Ostok Foldstandard in the Swamp of Frothing in the year 288.

So... what was the Beak Dog doing that is considered "labor"? I suppose they nest, don't they- maybe he's building a little house for baby Beak Dogs- babies that will one day torment Drunkensteels, I expect.

The drowning trap works fairly well; the only problem is that I forgot a backup drain. Fortunately, the backup drain is now installed.

Also, on the water level of the third-level cavern, Mugub the FB showed up - a towering blob composed of grime and filth. It has a spiral shell and a bloated body, and dorfs should beware its gas.

I built a magma trap that sealed five forgotten beasts in a corridor connected to my (pressurized) magma reservoir.

Unfortunately, I forgot to put in a way to UNSEAL the corridor from the reservoir. Also I forgot to put in a way to let the corridor drain into the caverns without, additionally, letting it drain into my fortress.

At least I now have five melting forgotten beasts. And one made of olivine. And one that isn't melting despite being made of snow, oh well.

Abandoned my fort after receiving a few casualties.  My very young militia, which had just started with axe training, and were only armed with wooden axes, were sent to kill the dwarven outpost liaison by their crazy overseer ( me ).  I did not realize how strong the outpost liaison was, I lost my entire militia that day.  Reports popped up everywhere, my inexperienced and poorly equipped axedwarves were dying, it was just absolute chaos.  It was the most fun I've had in Dwarf Fortress for  LONG TIME.

I think I finally ( in some small way ) understand why losing is fun.

Well, the artificial lake/moat thing is in place, let's see if it stops the lava... This is the last chance for Clashcloisters! :-\

While I think it is uncharacteristic of us as a whole, good luck mate. (If nothing else, we need stories of magma. Or you need stories and stories of magma. Or you have stories of magma. Look, it doesn't matter.)

Just tell us about magma and if water worked. Should be getting some nice stone, anyway. Even if no one is around to use it.

As for NRDL, welcome. The definition of fun is somewhat vague, so it is nice to see you appreciate it in its more dwarvy form.

As for my place, I am about to turn the waterfall on. I am fairly certain I made all preparations before I went to bed. I've looked over them, and...

Wow. I am amazed it works. Maybe I'll build a statue garden near it. Yeah.

Yoink, I'm afraid that the moat may only afford you a little more time.  Won't the lava eventually fill the moat and creep over?  The only thing that stops lava is gravity.  You have to take to higher ground! Alternatively dig down and create a U-bend, letting the lava create a natural and impenetrable barrier between you and the world of light and air.  Like this:
DOOMED OUTSIDE WORLD_____________________________

>====>  >===  :) Safe dwarves underground  :)  :)  :)

As for my fort, the first goblin siege arrived together with a dwarven caravan, just as I finished the last touches on some new fortifications.  If only I had some ammo and a front gate that can close, I'd be fine.  Maybe it's time to release the dragon from its cave and see if it's hungry for some gobbo meat ;)

Well, crud! The lava/magma turned to obsidian when it hit the moat as planned... And then more just poured over the newly-formed rock. ::)
Looks like my dwarves will just have to burrow into the side of a hill, ekeing out a miserable existence in the caverns as the world outside turns into a sea of lava, all pouring from that one, tiny hole in the volcano... :(
Will see what happens when I can play more later on. :P Seriously, I didn't realise that the side of the volcano sloped into this crevice, which lead straight down to the doors of my fort, like a funnel! Whoops, eh?

For the first time in, what, eight years, I let the outer gate lower. Why? Because "oh look, only one siege and it's crundles, this should be easy enough".

Then the ambush squad showed up. And another. And another. And two more after those. At that point the entrance tunnel was full of chopped off limbs, mashed corpses and gore. And the ambush squads kept showing up along snatchers and thieves caught in the fighting. The order was given for the military to start pushing forward to the surface levels and eventually the fighting was over.

I have no god damn idea how many enemies in total showed up or even managed to escape, but in the end a lot of ettins, crundles, greater devourers and chaos dwarves were found among the corpse pile and most of the military now were proud named&titled fighters.

The only wound received was by an axedwarf who got his right knee busted at some point, but it was after he too fought and killed his way to fame so whatever.

Nice to see that my military is finally up to the task of repelling massive amounts of enemies.
