One of the sectoids takes a shot at Jane, which even when missing, it was quite close to the target.

Suddenly the door opens and the apparent leader of the group steps out, empowered, and directs a beam of energy from his head straight at Crazy's. Crazy feels a slight jab, and soon starts hallucinating, affected from the sectoid's strange power.

The grenade bounced into the farmhouse. Fore a moment, there was silence, before the Sectoids gave yelps of alarm. The concussive blast shredded one of the sectoids with red-hot shrapnel, and wounded two more. They screeched in pain as the smoke dispersed.
 
Meanwhile, Crazy reloaded his smg, only paying half attention to the task his hands were carrying out as he watched the grenade explode.

As Derek moved forward, he fell under the baleful eyes of one the aliens. One snapped off a quick pulse of searing green.

The plasma splashed over his side, and Derek recoiled in pain, slowing, stopping. He groaned deeply as his flesh seared.

Another Sectoid fired. Derek began a scream.

Derek McWhirter has been killed!

He never finished it - the surge of plasma was a direct, deadly hit. His head no longer present, his neck a charred, blackened stump, the corpse that had been the operative collapsed to the ground with a thud.

The aliens didn't let up. Another one fired at Arthur, this time the deadly projectile hissing over his head into the dark. Another used more of the strange purple energy on crazy, filling his sight with delusions and his head with pain.
