Hathcock shakes his head in disgust as he looks at the coins in his hands. So little for the great son of a noble family. As he walks through the streets, trying to think of a way to raise the money, he spots the factor's hall, and sees that the queen is taking audiences. Perhaps, in these strangest of times, he can find some use in the rebel scum.

"My name is Ryan Hathcock, of the Hathcock family of knights. I would like to request an audience with the queen."

Hathcock

Your turn eventually comes, after about three hours of waiting.  A disappointed former landowner clears the space before the Princess and the guards usher you before her.  She bestows a regal, if tired smile upon you.

"Ryan Hathcock, ma'am," says one of the guards.

"Thank you Ipswich.  Of what matter did you wish to speak to me, Master Hathcock?"

The man drops to one knee before the queen, looking up at her and returning the smile. He'd be carrying himself with the air of a lower noble, one who knows he isn't quite the most important person in the room. After he rose back to his feet, the young man would begin to speak, in a noticeable upper-class Prestoner accent.

"I apologize for demanding your time, m'lady, but I did not have many other options. I was a cavalry commander in the Preston army defending this city. Your people turned me loose, but I can't help but notice that hundreds, if not thousands, of other Prestoners are being sold to the Weys. I must admit, this probably sounds extremely suspicious, but I do not want brave men to be sold into slavery for wearing the wrong uniform. If you would give me funds to purchase even a few of these men from the Weys, I'd be indebted."

He then looks around at the guards surrounding him, before leaning forward, and saying, in a conspiratorial tone.

"I would offer you my sword, but they appear to have taken it."

At the Audience
So far the Eel had watched silently, well silently apart from his incessant chewing of thesse odd pastries he was so fond of...and fish and gods know what else that man was eating all day long. He and a few of his men had been standing all day long on the west wall of the Throneroom, close to the dais but not behind the throne, only to the side of it.

They wanted to make clear that the queen was up there because of them, but that they had no part in whatever the throne was doing from now on. Between chewing and clearing his mouth with a swig from a skin of which no one was too sure what was in it, he grinned broadly at the Prestonian Cavalry Officer, like a cat at a future plaything. However he stayed silent, this little encounter might yet prove if his investment in this kingdom might yet bear fruits or if he was going to be disappointed.

At the Audience...

Flavia shadowed the Eel as of recent, like a bad ghost, watching him intently, noting things in her mind. As the time went on, the man became more and more of an irritation to her. Last thing she wanted to do is to leave him that close to the throne in such situation, where Erika needed both advice and protection from that... slob.

When the Prestonian man came in, she had half a mind ot arrest him, but his boldness was something ot be noted. Not to mention he gave her an idea...

Flavia walked up the dais and leaned in to speak quietly to Erika's ear.
"We still have some prisoners in the Citadel, we haven't finished giving over all of them to the Eel. It would cost him and us nothing."

Hathcock

Erika tapped her fingers on the edge of the gilded chair, listening to General Terryn and then glancing at the Eel off to one side.

"Your candour in admitting your allegiances does you credit, especially in your foe's own home.  Alas, I have little reason to grant you wealth and position, and as much as I might like to simply grant you men, it would be a breach of contract with my dear friend and ally, Jarl Manskinner.

"A thought occurs.  We require a man to bring terms to Preston, the conditions of our peace.  It is a dangerous mission, and I have little doubt that any Elbrethan we send will be executed.  As a citizen of Preston, however, your life might be spared, and they may be willing to listen to you.

"I offer you this commission, Captain Hathcock.  Deliver our terms to Preston and I will personally intercede with the Jarl for the lives and freedom of twelve men of your choosing.  Not enough to truly cause trouble, but sufficient for an emissary's bodyguard.  Come back alive and with Preston's response and I will be happy to accept your allegiance, with the rewards befitting an officer of your station.  Fail and the matter is irrelevant.  You have my offer, what say you?"

"I do indeed have experience in such matters, and you'd be correct in assuming I want a share in the reconstruction efforts.

Of course, if it was the banking system that impressed you in Ligoria, then I say you are adept in missing the point; Ligoria's true pride and joy stems from the massive kyrite deposit that all but dominates the economy. Has to, given there's little arable land. We are engineers first and foremost, and we've damn well made it impossible for anyone to try annexing us unless we want it.

I'm not exactly a people person, so to speak. That being said, it shouldn't be too hard to find any other engineers in Elbreth, and hardly any more difficult to organise them. Getting the finances to do so would be a far more arduous task given the economic condition of the populace. Everything said though, it can and will be done, how long it'll take is a different matter."

The knight smiles as he hears the third option, before glancing at the Eel.

"A third option. I see. I do not have much choice in the matter, given the fact that you could easily have me thrown in the dungeon, so I suppose I shall accept. I swear, on my honor, that I will bring Preston the terms and return."

He straightens up, smiling at the queen, before looking at the soldiers, dotted all across the room.

"I suppose I will be on my way, then, if you have nothing else to add? I need to retrieve my sword before someone has the bright idea to run off with it."

After tea had been served and she'd listened to his request, she nodded.

"A worthy goal. I certainly plan to beseech the Princess that the true faith be given its proper place in the ruling of the country - we follow, but we also advise.

As for Suul... I shall try my best, but I have talked on the Eel with the Princess before. A vile tool, to be sure, but one she needs. I despise such people as him... but perhaps they can be commanded to at least withhold their evil from the churches, so the innocent may shelter within."

((The Abbess can talk to the queen tomorrow, but I felt it best to show that I am here.))

Hathcock

"Ipswich will see that the armourer supplies you adequately, and Master Filroy will deliver you the terms.  You are dismissed."

After receiving your supplies and (provided the Eel consents) selecting your men, you are given a sealed envelope to carry to Preston.  [Note: This envelope is sealed in green wax with the seal of Elbreth, in such a way as to prevent tampering.]

After Court, of an Evening.

Erika sat down in the heavy cushioned leather armchair, letting out a soft groan and massaging her temples.  An ever-flowing cascade of morons and people she could not help.  One of the servants had already laid out tea, and Erika seriously considered having her bodyguard/double outside test it, but shook her head.  If Hassir was doing his job, poison should not be a concern.

A servant entered and bowed.

"Grand Abbess Santaria, majesty."

Erika nodded to him and sat herself up a little more presentably, smoothing out her dress.  The Abbess was shown in and Erika gestured to a chair.

"Welcome, Abbess.  Help yourself to some of the Factor's best tea.  How fare you, friend?"

Hoffenburg had been given a simple enough task and one he was somewhat used to. After all, the cultivating of relationships amongst the aristocracy was sometimes the only thing holding Korlan together, or at least the old Korlan. Nobility were often more connected by their shared class than anything as temporary as a nation which was often more an idea found in books or maps. Or at least, that had been true up until a few decades ago. Regardless, some tea and talk with the man would do no harm and only bring good.

Before he left, Ambros penned a short missive for the Princesses' eyes:

Spoiler:  To the Princess: (click to show/hide)

Dig up any info on Julian I can find.
Pay a visit to viscount Julian.
Spend some time figuring out how big the Korlanese diaspora is in the Mirish Coast.

Ambros von Hoffenburg

Dig up any info on Julian I can find.
Pay a visit to viscount Julian.
Spend some time figuring out how big the Korlanese diaspora is in the Mirish Coast.

[6] You are no intelligence officer, but you have no difficulty in making enquiries about the man - he is perhaps one of the most-well known people in the capital, right behind Erika and quite few people hold him to be the future Chancellor, or at least the head of whatever government is going to form. It is of no secret either that the Adequin family is of old Elbrethian stock, minor knights to king Erick that over the centuries rose to prominence due to their wealth. Julian is currently an owner of significant estates  in Stonewood and Riverfall counties, as well as having stock in few industrial enterprises in the capital - somehow, he managed ot acquire ownership of those after his Prestonian partners fled.
His popularity has another dimension - he is perhaps the most desirable bachelor in the country, and his residence in the city is a focal point for all larger social events, in addition to political ones. a certain rumor has it that Adequin family's bloodline is special and that the powers of old flow through it, but you are uncertain whether it is just an exaggeration or something else.
Your inquiries are not unnoticed however and it would appear that Julian will be aware that you were asking about him before your meeting.

[6] The Korlanese are quite widespread around Mirish coast and practically every larger town has them - in very small numbers. Trade and craft are their main business and each local group is quite tightly knit, holding on to their positions and not inviting larger immigration. All of it is tied to the trade houses back home, as you are aware, as Korlan is making a fortune on exotic goods flowing from Aphti and Swastamik, in particular coffee and fruit.

*

Julian Augustus Adequin, Vicount Riverfall and business magnate, invited you to his residence. He greets you in one of the guest rooms - richly decorated, furnishings in red and gold with rich Samakhet carpets on the floors.

The man himself is an imposing figure - tall, wide shoulders and noble posture, in addition to keen, blue-eyed gaze, smooth, jaw and medium-length light blonde hair swept back. the man was wearing a navy blue suit with waistcoat and a cravat. You gave him an age of early thirties at most, and took note of his walk and posture - the man no doubt did variety of sports.

"General von Hoffenburg, welcome in my humble abode," he began and shook your hand. His grip is sure and matches yours, but is not overbearing. "I was glad to hear that you were the first to extend an invitation to meet with me. I looked forward to an opportunity to talk with Her Highness' advisers. I am sure that someone of your rank and standing can appreciate the need to discuss some crucial matters."

He beckons you to sit with him at a table, while servants brought in coffee and some light snacks.

"I took the liberty of ordering some refreshments. Korlanese coffee and some almond cakes. We have something stronger as well, if you wish for it, but I thought it prudent to drink something refreshing while we discuss business. I won't bore you with my life story, I'm sure you've heard enough." He looks you straight in the eyes, and does so with great ease. He is gauging your reactions and responses, but you notice nothing hostile or worrying in his stare.
"Her Highness heard our address, no doubt and everyone is anxious to hear her out, as to how she will proceed. What is your opinion? We are restoring the Elbreth of old, or building a new one? I would imagine it is both at the same time, but I am curious as to what exact vision does she hold."

This situation was, less than ideal. A frightful reputation could be very useful in the future, but right now it was far more detrimental.  He simply didn't have enough agents yet, so much treachery could be going on in this city right under his nose and he simply wouldn't have the agent's to deal with it. Perhaps now was a time fo outsourcing,  and maybe he could use this time to even get back to his research.

Have my agents attempt to find a working printing press while making sure they also show no affiliation with me whatsoever.
Also have my agents search for potential recruits, but do not approach them, just observe.

The viscount was a man that seemed almost larger than life, but of course he would want it to seem that way, would he not? True, he was in a very good position currently and had the capability to improve it...but one cannot judge a man by a single meeting and mere rumours.

...Despite the man letting his reputation speak for himself. Ambros had to suppress a more-than-professional smile when the noble mentioned his fact checking. He could already tell this man was more than suited at this game.

Still, the man had already begun with the dreaded backroom politicking, complete with the coffee and cake, not something Hoffenburg had spent much time doing. Even so, it was something of a treat to experience a good Korlanese blend. Taking a long sip, Ambros allowed the man to wait a bit for his reply.

"I cannot speak for the Princess you must understand and only state what I have observed. She is quite clearly a woman of her lineage. She leads with a firm hand, thinks with a wise mind and fights with a steel blade. She is no vain liberal or fool and has a clear goal in mind for this country, one she will attain. Now, I am a military man and do not have complete knowledge on what she desires but she clearly draws inspiration from her ancestors from before the Prestoner annexation...which is not to say that she is a pure reactionary, of course."

Ambros took another sip, with happiness slowly replacing the man's characteristic dourness.

"This brew is excellent by the way, you must tell where you buy your beans!"

He took a bite out of the cake.

"But tell me viscount Adequin, what do you think of our current issues? Preston? Weyland? The republicans? Her Majesty? The non-republican commoners?"

Anate Norn was not in a good mood. He could not comprehend how any one man was supposed to get his head around the business of economy. Someone more qualified would just have to handle that - he'd be disappointing the Queen, but so be it. Better than try on and waste even more time. At least he could make himself useful and meet with Stiles. But first, he needed to explain himself to the Queen. Anate penned a short letter and sent it along to the Queen.

Spoiler: To the Queen (click to show/hide)

---
Beg the Queen to assign someone else to figure out this mess of an economy. Poor bastard.
Seek out information on Stiles and hear out people's opinions of him.
Find Stiles and go meet him.
