[Why would the river have salt? Sure, there might be some, but you'd have to spend weeks distilling it to get any useful amount.]

The salt aside, how is our clothing industry? We will need a lot of cloth to build a zeppelin, and a lot of tallow or beeswax to make the thing hydrogen-containing, that or a lot of intestine membrane, which they used in WW2.

The salt necessary in minimal, we just need to boost the auto ionization of water. Calcium, magnesium, pretty much anything dissolved into the water will work. In an age of purified water, probably any water we can get will have enough salts. Distilled water would need an addition, but not river water. If we distilled the water 1st, it wouldn't work. Natural water is never pure, and will conduct enough.

OOC: it took around 250,000 cows for enough intestine to make a single zeppelin, which was, admittedly, about 700 feet long.

[If you convince the Mountainhome that building a zeppelin is useful, probably by making smaller balloons and the like, you'll get the resources to do it. Your textile industry isn't perfect, but you've got a lot of people, they will have brought weavers and looms.]

<<I thought it might have salt because of natural dilution or some round-about logic that makes no sense now that I think about it.>>

<<How big of a zeppelin are you thinking? And it's going to be similar to the WW2 ones, right? Ellipsoid balloon? I can tell you how much fabric, and therefore how much time, you need to make it.>>

"The plan was to 1st construct a smaller one, large enough only for a few people, and minimal lifting capacity, using mainly locally sourced materials as proof of concept. Then, if the project gets more support, a large one would be built, along similar lines as the WW2 zeppelins. The 1st would be about 50 feet long, ellipsoid, and dwarf powered; IE something similar to bike petals powering a propeller. Even at that size though, with a little food and water, it could be very useful as a scout ship or such."

[You might be thinking WW1, not much in the way of zeppelin warfare in WW2.]

<<Yeah meant WW1. ALso, this thing would take a long time and a lot of materials, unless we've got a lot of weavers. Which I doubt.>>

[The full-size one certainly will. A smaller one, or even just a hot-air balloon, is probably a lot less work. And again, if you manage to get the Mountainhome on your side, you'll have access to some serious resources.]

I know it will take a lot, and that is why I want to build a small one first, not one that is 700 feet long. The hardest part is just going to be getting and air-proofing enough cloth, after the hydro-dam is complete anyway. Prove the concept, and then we can start talking about building a massive passenger/cargo, steam powered behemoth of the sky.

<<The small one won't be a small project either. That's still some 2500 square feet of cloth. Although, once we prove it's usefulness to the mountain home, we'll have the strength of an entire civ behind us. Or atleast most of it>>

engines

[No. You have crappy prototype steam pistons. That does not a lightweight, high-RPM internal combustion engine make.]

<<No. We need a lot more than a crappy steam piston. And I don't even know how a plane works, besides something spins, and air resistance helps it fly :P
