"I do know how the aerodynamics of wings provide lift for airplanes, but we have no where near a good enough engine to get enough speed to generate enough lift to get said engine off the ground. The 1st round the world flight was done by a zeppelin, and a zeppelin we can make."

Continue making stronger turbines for the dam

((Good thing I'm an aerospace engineering student. I can probably help with planes but as Amp said, shitty steam engines won't cut it.

I wonder how a magitek-based motor would perform, though.. .)

Hmm?

Refine steam engines to make them portable -  steam trains?

[I'd think you'll want to refine them until you actually have steam engines, instead of crude boiler/piston assemblies. You can work on portability and usefulness afterwards.  Somebody should probably also work on energy storage, something magitek is probably well-suited to, in the case you don't want to rely on lead-acid batteries.]

((I know I'm not the magitek user here but how easy/difficult would it be to create a rotating magnetic field with magitek? What kind of torque/RPM could we get?))

[The main difference with basic magitech is required quality control, since it can take energy from basically anywhere.]

[I don't actually have a terribly coherent opinion on the matter, please discuss further.]

((Magitek-powered propellers, essentially. I want to know if I can get enough torque to spin a propeller around at speeds fast enough to fly a plane or plane-like contraption.

The discussion of powered flight got me thinking, is all.))

[You can definitely get a plane running on magitek, and something along those lines is almost certainly your only heavier-than-air option for the time being, it just has difficulties and restrictions I don't have a good understanding of or opinion on. Your first barrier after tooling up for that kind of detailed work is going to be power, since it's more like an electric engine than a combustion one.]

((The primary issue is thrust:weight ratio on our propeller and to a lesser extent what we can make the plane itself out of, given the lack of easy access to aluminum [is there bauxite on this embark?]. I was thinking that something closer to an electric motor might actually be more viable for the time being given the fact that we have the ability to pretty much scoop power straight out of the air, plus this sort of thing strikes me as somewhat less error-prone than what is essentially a sustained series of explosions. I'd imagine that initial designs would also be quite crude and of little practical use, though a change in power sources might change the design process somewhat.))
