Satan wrestling a dragon. Nuff said.
Well, you'd be surprised if you saw Satan wrestling a dragon in your living room too.

It was a damn good game, though.
That looks like a Cyclops though.

On second thought, stuffing a tactical thermonuclear weapon into a basketball might make the sport more watchable/games more playable for me.

It is. You played either the dragon or the cyclops, progressing through levels of smashing up towns/villages and, if I remember correctly, sometimes facing off against the monster you didn't play. Awesome game.

Wasn't that the plot to Barkley: Shut Up and Jam Gaiden?

Then I must be on to something, I recall that one being rather popular in a cult-hit sort of way.

You know...

The Megaman box art was bad because it was nothing like the games, as if it took place in an entirely different dimension. To the extent that Capcom later actually turned "bad box art megaman" into his own character with a backstory (Roll being his hot girlfriend or something)... In fact I wouldn't mind if they made a game.

But some of these seem to be "Bad = Wacky"

I mean really? Fester's Quest Box art is bad? The art that specifically shows Fester and is a good drawing to boot? What is so bad about it?

No, specifically there was a ball that was so advanced that it would never miss a basket... and I think that was it. (It coincidentally makes basket ball sound absolutely boring)

There were no nuclear basketballs.

The sad part about this is, I do remember some of these from when I was a kid. And I saw nothing wrong with them at the time. I think I was too young to know better.

I'm going to pick the low-hanging fruit that's been missed so far:

So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

Nope.  Mentioned it in the very first post of the thread.

I've never seen that before and I lived through [most of] the 80s and 90s.

Of course, I never had a SNES.

Mmm, don't think so. Take a look how the basket and upright center there very nicely to complete the image of a mushroom cloud.

That aside, if you subtract out the cloud, it's still a pretty lame bit of box art. But after what, 20 games in the series, they probably don't really care anymore. And it was probably cheaper not to put someone's mug on the cover.
