I'm being attacked by a Weremonitor...

I'm wondering if I should capture it and use it in making a were-fortress...  just thinking of all the dwaves turning into monitors for the fresh batch of immigrants to play DF on...

Genning a new world to start fresh for the fresh release. The three ages of this world are:

Age of the Hydra and the Titan
Age of the Titan
The Golden Age

Awww... why did the Hydra have to die first? I love hydras.... I mean, I've never actually seen one in DF before, from personal experience, but coming from the guy who made a Were-Hydra in DnD 3.5 (yes, I had to adjust the template into homebrew territory), the guy who runs a Hydra deck in MtG, and the guy who has a physical folder full of hydra drawings...

I love hydras. That's slightly upsetting that the Titan won out over the Hydra.

This is Breachedpages. I've tunneled into a volcano just outside a warm, tropical forest. No ground critters spotted yet, but the skies are full of giant eagles and grey parrots.

Playing with invasions off and vampires disabled to reacquaint myself with the game and to learn the new mechanics.

I use a 20x20 tile grid patten for my layout. (This happens to be two shift-arrow keystrokes when designating, so it makes it easy to keep things symmetrical.)

Legend:
1. This is the grid square right about my indoor farm. I've tunneled holes in the floor to bucket fill the level below for my plump helmet fields. After all of the farms are set up, this grid square will be filled up with kitchens, stills, farmer's workshops, querns and their related stockpiles.
2. My stables. Currently occupied by a dog, a pangolin, a jaguar and an orangutan. Waiting for the elves to bring me mates for the last three.
3. Magma smelters (under construction).
4. Stockpile grid square. Top half is for ore, bottom is for bars.
5. Initial magma smelters, forges and kilns.
6. Future sites of magma forges.
7. Reservoir. Directly above is the statue garden/well room and the hospital.
8. This was my first attempt at a climbing trainer. I lure eight idlers into the room with repeat level pulling jobs, then lock the door behind them and cancel the lever tasks. They have no option but to climb out. In retrospect, I made this too easy, because they only gain skill if they fall and grasp the wall on the way down, and rough walls are too east to climb. I may have to retool this with constructed block walls.
9. The reason I have to bucket brigade my farms (see #1) is because the "aquifer" turned out to be a tiny underground stream that fingers in from the bottom right. And it's only on one z-level. When tapping the aquifer for the reservoir, I wound up tunneling under it, missing it entirely. I had to dig a staircase upwards to actually reach the water. (Surprisingly, no miners drowned in the attempt.)

To do list:
1. Danger room & sparring barracks -- about to be built in the mined-out space between the reservoir and the climbing wall.
2. Build another magma-proof floodgate and get the bank of smelters set up.
3. Set up poultry operation.
4. Finish getting underground farms up and running.

I just discovered that the magma pump-stack I wanted to build has to move magma for 156 levels, through ALL the different cavern layers. I might as well just use coal.

First migrant wave has given me the most useless family of five ever. Mom is a novice brewer/grower/tanner (we have better specialists for all of these). Dad is an adequate animal dissector. They have no other skills, but they do have three children aged two, three and four. I'm making them dedicated haulers until I can draft them.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

This is the worst damned aquifer I've ever had the misfortune to encounter.

First 2 levels are normal soil, next is peat over the entire embark with a aquifer. Under that is clay, no aquifer.

Under the clay is microcline and sandstone, sandstone is an aquifer. Microcline pockets are not, but I can only dig those out a little and hope that they lay over each other just enough to get a staircase down through the layers.

So far I'm past 6 layers of aquifer, with another below me at least.

Well, blind luck is with the dorfs of Torchwood (wanted to name a fort that, even if it had been on a glacier; instead I have a savage good/ savage neutral forest in what is undoubtedly elf lands.) I decided to bring a mechanic/animal trainer in a bid to try and domesticate the local wildlife and instead found the non-magma jackpot: Lignite, Dolomite, Magnetite. All the ingredients to make a steel armed militia. I almost never get this kind of luck and it's in prime elf country. There's also cassiterite, and if there's tetrahedrite I can also make bronze for reservist troops to use.

I also hope to agitate the elves, speaking of them. Many can be found living nearby which should make this easy, and native platinum clusters means easy trade with home and the humies.  Abrook nearby can provide fish for a while as well as fresh water and a place for a mill, which will make importing cave wheat, hemp (from the humans most likely and if I'm lucky,) and sweet pods viable for flour and sugar to add to meat-fish meals.

Traps are laid, the depot is built, and a sheriff and militia commander are in place already and it's not even summer, though the local badgers are reluctant to blunder into the traps. Can't say i blame them considering the habits/history of dwarves when left with various wildlife charges. But it matters not.

Litastlolum ud bol.

I started a fort and didn't get any immigrants in the first summer or fall. Maybe the early migrant waves aren't hardcoded anymore. Hmm.

I hope I'm not stuck with a migrantless fort, there's tons of coal and iron here.

Make sure your d_init file was not copied over from previous versions.
A strict population cap has been implemented, and with it missing from the file, it defaults to 0, which means no immigrants or babies. ever.
