Well, the other thing is that the 25th reminds me of the main characters here- a bunch of ragtag misfits ranging from barely-fit for military duty, to newbies to veterans.

Technically yes, but only going by the strict CS definition of the term. Which is to say they're the programs that take in the pilot's inputs and makes the mech move around, and thus are as stupid as a bag of bricks.

Do we as pilots have personal weapons? Revolvers or bolt-action rifles, I would guess from the time period if we do.

Revolvers, yep. I was going to mention them explicitly, but couldn't fit it into the intro. Bolt-action rifles are a bit too cumbersome to take into a cockpit with you.

Maybe officers can buy their promotions? It's how it worked* in the British Army for a long time. It's also likely for this sort of time period setting that the upper class are officers, skilled or not: that's just what they were.
