Fniff's Game Design Challenges!
Think you'd make a good game designer? What is this?Since this is a gaming forum filled with a lot of creative people, a lot of us would like to be game developers. You might have written a few ideas down, doodled some concept art, or even tried your hand at designing the game itself. However, game development is most often a collaborative effort.
Why not try working with a team to create a real asset in a videogame?
Are we actually making a game?Nah, it's a little more like those prompts you get for writing and drawing and such. I give you a randomly selected thing you need to design (An enemy, an item, etc) and a few keywords to influence it. You choose your role in the development of this asset and try to help out with it until the deadline hits after a few days of work. At the end, you present what you've made and you get medals for it!
What are the roles?
Well, here they are. Do tell rate ones you feel you're best at. Remember, you can pick multiple roles.
Designers Design systems for how the game would work. So how would that level be laid out in a way that makes sense and is fun? How would that soldier's artificial intelligence work? How do you simulate fire spreading? This one is good for programmers and people who like logic.
Artists Produce concept art and sprites for how the game would look. What is the look of the level? What kind of uniform is the soldier wearing? How do you make fire look good? This one is good for people with artistic mindsets and... well, artists.
Creatives Come up with atmosphere and stories behind the game. What would make good music for this level? What army is that soldier from? Where should the fire be? This one is good for writers and people who like brainstorming things.
Did you say something about medals for this? This could be you!Yes, you'll be getting medals for this! In later rounds this is going to be more competitive, with separate teams and everything, but for now we'll keep it nice as a dry run. You'll be getting a one-time-only medal for participating, the New !!SCIENTIST!! medal. Medals are designed to be placed in signatures, and they have your name alongside them so you can prove it's yours. Unless you forge it, which would be weird since you'll be also put on a list of participants, which means everyone would know you were lying. ANYWAY.
How do I sign up?Just say what roles you'd be interested in (You can pick more then one if you like), and I'll sign you up! Every round will have a set number of participants (I'm thinking six at maximum and four at minimum, but I'm flexible) and a deadline which will be at midnight after 3-4 days of work. There's a few people who expressed interest, so they might get prioritized, but no-one is excluded from the waitlist.
Get designing!
