Devs just got quiet. They're still planning a big update by the end of the year, but for some reason only posted about it on the Steam forums instead of their website.

There was a "postmortem" on their website so i just assumed it was dead for good...

Yeah, it's a bad PR job to post an early "postmortem" then go silent except for steam forums isn't it? Nobody ever accused an indie game dev of being good at marketing, though. Haha.

He's still planning one big update of 1.3 and the bug fixes to go along with it at the end of the year.

actually it looks like the dev if sales keep up may consider further development, but poor sales no income i can understand moving on.  The game is actually out and selling and playable and moddable it just suffers from poor word of mouth.

Assuming you're not starting as a faction (or even if you are) setting up an automated trader or two in every friendly faction's territory can help with early funds. Doesn't take that much money or ship parts. Sticking an escort on them is handy too. If you're just starting out, claiming all the free planets you can find for the ship part income can be nice. Once you've claimed territory, setting up solar and mines and production chains significantly boosts the productivity of your space - but I've found just plopping down military bases to claim territory to be the best thing early on.
