This is the bicentennial political upheaval we've been waiting for. Republicans are stuck between being too reactionary or not reactionary enough. I've said it before, but now it's looking more and more likely: We might see the end of the Republican party and the formation of a new liberal party left of the Democrats.

anti-vaxxer crowd.
Not to derail the votecounting, but is that still a real thing?

It's a thing, yes, even got a question in one debate.

Anyway, Carson will probably see that one district he won as a sign from god to continue and not quit. :P

For Alaska, I'm gonna predict that maybe.... Cruz will get a late edge over Trump like he did in Oklahoma and win that state by a narrow margin.

Going to bed now.

Bernie's only one guy, and afaik he didn't think to bring any fellow democratic socialists along to run for congress. Also the green party already exists, along with the libertarian party, which I mention just because it's bigger than the green party (Trump would probably need his own party just for him).

But there's a reason Trump and Sanders chose not to run as independents or with another party. If Trump wins the primary he takes all the other republican competitors out of the equation, whereas if he ran independent he'd be in a three way battle in the general - and nobody would have paid any attention to Sanders if he ran in the Green party primary, and nobody would want to waste their votes on him if he won it, because he would have no chance to win and would just siphon votes from Hillary. Also that Sanders wanted to "change the conversation."

Personally I think if the republican party collapses it will be replaced by a more moderate conservative party and the dems will shift left to accommodate them.  As comical as their presidential candidates have been lately, I don't think the republicans are on the edge of collapse.  They hold plenty of elected positions at all levels of government.

I do think they're the victim of changing demographics, but even that could change.  Hispanic immigrants on average are actually pretty OK with the republican's views... if the republicans would stop alienating them every chance they get.  I think if anything brings the republicans down its that they think of themselves as not radical ENOUGH.  In a sane world the tea party would have been the less conservative alternative drawing in new demographics.

Alternate possibility: someone crazy wins the presidency this time, uses the republican majority in congress to drive the party's name into the dirt with unpopular socially conservative policies.  A bunch of incumbent republican congressmen get voted out.  That could cause a shakeup of things.

Waitwaitwait - would that mean that the far right in Congress would finally have a reason to support election reform? That would be an unexpected upside of this whole shebang.

Right now the most plausible path to a Sanders presidency is an agrarian ice cream revolt.  Have fun out there.

So, Paul Ryan and Hillary have both picked up the "YOU DIDN'T DENOUNCE DAVID DUKE!" line against Trump. Is this a case of them trying to say a lie so many times it makes it true in people's eyes, or is there something that was missed?

He definitely sounded wishy-washy about it when I saw him asked, though admittedly that clip came from "Last Week Tonight" and is thus probably biased.

But on the other other hand, it's Trump, so they really don't need to fake anything to make him sound like a sociopathic narcissist.

http://www.cnn.com/2016/03/01/politics/ben-carson-answered-prayers/index.html Okay, they really do want to lose that senate seat. Or is it a guaranteed safe republican seat? Anybody know on that?

edit: http://www.politico.com/blogs/2016-gop-primary-live-updates-and-results/2016/03/ben-carson-2016-election-220112 I guess he didn't take the bait. I figured that he either wouldn't be quite that stupid or is simply too stubborn to take the bait.
