Reminds me of how military chaplains are simultaneously equal rank to a 5 star commander and a junior cadet

That is an interesting combination.

EDIT: @Culise -- No, they do. They erase your name form all church records. Which, since they believe that only those "sealed" in the Church will enter the Kingdom of Heaven (or fly off to Kobol or whatever the fuck), then they're effectively revoking your "Get Out of Hell Free" card.
Ah, I see.  Does that also require all Mormons to have no social interactions with you whatsoever; basically, a Church-wide shunning?  It seems to me that a lot of churches say that if you don't follow them, you'll go to Hell (or some equivalent) already, so that doesn't seem too exceptional by Christian standards.

IIRC that's a pretty standard practice in the LDS, Scientology, I think even the Amish community.

Dunno.

But consider that for most Protestant denominations, there's no hierarchy, so while a preacher may tell you you're going to Hell, they don't have the power to enforce that in a theological sense. Churches like the LDS and Catholicism, there's a dogmatic way to actually remove you from the "ranks of the redeemed". Which may seem laughable to non-believers, but consider the plight of someone who is a devout Mormon and fully believes that they're going to hell unless they denounce their own parent?

Excommunication is no joke to those who actually believe in what they're being excommunicated from.

To quote Lutheran doctrine, it's by faith you've been saved, not by what any other person or hierarchy says.

Military chaplains are either some of the greatest or most disquieting people you'll ever meet.

Which, like I said, is a hallmark of Protestantism -- there's no single authority or council with the ability to damn you.
(I was raised Lutheran, Missouri Synod).

Also once a Lutheran, and I see it as kind of worse since it encourages narcissistic mob shaming because anyone can claim valid authority.

I seem to recall saying I would laugh if Trump ended up becoming the face of the republican party, despite the party's objections.
If he does I'll laugh in relief because he's much better than Carson

Pretty standard with all cults, really.
Indeed.  The three examples I listed come from Jehovah's Witnesses (we actually had two Witnesses on a forum I used to go to, one of whom had been so condemned), Scientology, and certain grains of ultra-orthodox Judaism (Haredi and Chassidic).  I was mostly curious because of the many things I've heard laid at their door, being so actively PNG'd was one of the few things I hadn't heard about the Church of Latter-Day Saints - that is, even if you denounce the Church, you can still at least talk to your friends and family who are still practitioners, and vice versa.

Heh, yeah, the whole 'we must be friendlier to minorities' idea got derailed hard by Trump (who evidently never read the post-mortem report that they did) and then some of the candidates kept trying to out-trump Trump.

Still, rhetoric aside, I do agree that we need to fix the border issue first, but nobody's able to agree on how to fix it, so, it ranges from more border patrols to building a freaking 'great wall of China' on the border.

Also, I don't remember immigration being discussed much in the first democratic debate, maybe it will this coming weekend.

Maybe because there isn't that much of a border issue in the first place? It's not like those immigrants are hurting the US.

Any sort of damage that immigration might have done(if any) to the US was completely dulled by the damage we did to ourselves in 2008. Seems like kind of a silly thing to fight over when we still haven't really recovered from the recession and we're nearing the 10 year mark. (And no, stock market numbers don't tell the whole story.)
