Hey, hey, hey, too far. Yugoslavia was fine until Tito died and it slowly descended into vicious bloody anarchy. Oklahoma was never fine. Yugoslavia's memory should not be tarnished by comparisons with Oklahoma.

So, A Texas STate rep wants to limit anyone not a member of the media from being able to get close to police with a camera. Basically, if you're not an accredited member of the media, you record an officer closer than 25 feet, or 100 feet of you happen to be carrying a gun.

Of course, this only applies if the law is passed, but given this is TEXAS...

That's because law enforcement (and fed gov) want to put a box around the 4th estate, rather than admitting that "anyone and everyone is "the press"" if they write stories.

There are several fantastic (for them) advantages of hard-definition of who constitutes a member of the press. 

1) it lets them buy the media off (Rupert Murdock, eat your heart out)
2) It lets them circumvent the rights of the press, as intended.
3) it resolves all manner of logistical headaches when they want to hold a closed press conference, and random bloggers show up demanding admittance. (See 1 and 2 above)

And of course, many others.

Texas is "very friendly" toward big business, big govt, and big law enforcement.  But of course, they are totally different from other big-state friendly governments. Totally.  Not like china or north korea at all. No sir. Not at all.  They loves their guns, and that makes them magically different. Somehow.
