Meh, war with Mexico? Which part? I mean, if you try to take on some of the tougher cartels...

I'm on my phone, so it's too much of a pain in the ass to link an article. Basically, when he was running for the seat in 2014 and discussing border security at a debate, he said "we got to go laser or blitz somebody with a couple of fighter jets for a little while to make our point". The moderator asked him if he would be okay going to war with Mexico, to which he responded, "well, we did it before, if we need to do it again I don't have a qualm about it."

I thought dude would be toast after that, but I underestimated the power of the derp in the 6th district. The 6th took a blue chunk of Greensboro, and my liberal enclave of Hillsborough (two counties away) and diluted them with a long red swath of bumfuck nowhere through Rockingham, Alamance and northern Orange Counties.

Now with the rushed electoral maps they just redrew, all of Orange County is in the 4th District (which, given how they drew it, should remain blue for the next 100 years).

Tbh I was hoping he was committing to war not just saying he'd be ok for war, there's loads of people who'd be fine with a war against Russia but would not make plans to do so in a million years

Nah, I think he was more just advocating airstrikes on unarmed migrants and Mexican border towns. You know, run-of-the-mill war crimes.

Plus, he seems to think we have orbital death ray lasers or laser drones or something. Mind you, his only education is a small Bible college, and he worked at a car dealership before becoming a preacher. When NC endeavors to pick shitty elected officials, we are amazing at it.

Glorious Secretary-General exposes capitalist American scheme to corrupt youth and stage bloody coup.

Quote
The ANC's secretary-general Gwede Mantashe on Friday claimed that the US was plotting a "regime change" and called on party supporters to be vigilant against such a move.

"As we mobilise our people, we must say be vigilant. You must see through anarchy and people who are out there in a programme of regime change," Mantashe told ANC supporters during the party's unity march in Pretoria on Friday.

Mantashe claimed that the ANC knew about regular meetings at the US embassy in Pretoria and of programmes run by the US that allowed them to "plant" young people "everywhere."

"We are aware of the meetings taking place regularly at the American embassy," Mantashe said.

"Those meetings in the American embassy are about nothing else other than mobilisation for regime change. We’re aware of a programme that takes young people to the United States for six weeks, bring them back and plant them everywhere in the campuses and everywhere."

Mantashe's claims though were treated as a joke by Patrick Gaspard, the US ambassador to South Africa. Taking to Twitter, Gaspard said:

“I’m so disappointed as I always imagined that if I organised a coup it would look like Mardi Gras – food, music, dance.”

The ANC's Keith Khoza said Gaspard's reaction would not deter the party from escalating the matter with the US.

"We will elevate this matter to a formal level," Khoza was quoted as saying by the Weekend Argus.

"We will raise our concerns as a country whether they make a joke of it or not. If they (the US) had a concern and raised it with us, we wouldn’t treat it as a joke."

This would be Korea thread material except it's not about Best Korea.

Best Africa?

Has the ANC really fallen that far? This is almost Mugabe-level shit. Let me guess, the State Department and some NGOs probably have some democracy-building efforts in SA, which is assisting the rise of opposition parties, which the ANC seeks to discredit by painting them as US fifth columnists. Am I close?

I don't think the ANC really fell to Mugabe-level shit, they just cut it out for a while when Mandela got the whole saint of peace reputation.

PedoJesus loves the little children, all the children of the world.

So, I just found out that thanks to our knuckle-dragging Teatard legislature, the NC primaries are being moved from March 15 to June 7. So, basically we're back to being irrelevant. Thanks, you ignorant cluster of asshat fuckbarrels.

On the plus side, I'm back in the 4th District now, with Rep. David Price (a progressive Dem and all-around hoopy frood) as my Congresscritter, rather than Rep. Mark Walker (a Southern Baptist preacher who stated he had no qualms about going to war with Mexico). So there's that.

I heard that it was just the congressional and governor primaries, not the presidential, that got moved to June. Politico hasn't fixed the schedule on their page, so, *shrug*

Hmm, looks like you're right. Actually, even the gubernatorial and Senate primaries will go forward on Mar 15. It's only the Congressional primaries that got booted to June. Still, what a clusterfuck. I wonder if they're hoping people won't show up for the June primaries and the incumbents can all keep their jobs. Further confusing things is that the State Election Board director has said that all voters should cast their votes for the House races on Mar 15 anyways, even though they won't count (presumably because if the courts do somehow grant a stay on the initial ruling, then the new maps would be tossed out and the election would proceed under the old maps and they'd take the results of the first vote instead of the second).

Of course, the new maps aren't great, seeing as how they were specifically written with an eye towards preserving the Republicans' current 10-3 majority in House seats. Locking in that gerrymandered result, in other words. The new maps still have to be approved by the Federal courts, and I'm hoping they look at that aspect and say "fuck this noise" and either draw new maps themselves or appoint an outside expert (both of which are legal remedies the court could take). Of course, that would just feed the "tyrannical Federal government oppressing us poor Republicans" bullshit narrative they already have going.

(I realize my profanity per word-count is pretty high in the last few posts, sorry about that. Our state legislature makes me want to break things. Over certain fuckers' heads.)

They're talking about the Washington-Mandela Fellowship (http://exchanges.state.gov/non-us/program/mandela-washington-fellowship-young-african-leaders), a programme that gives a thousand sub-Saharan Africans an opportunity to take a six week leadership course at American universities.

The ANC are doing their best to seem literally schizophrenic right now though. I think they were involved in organising the Fellowship.

I somehow suspect the American government has no real motivation to stage a regime change here :P
It's just firebrand rhetoric. We still have people who think the model politician is a struggle hero in office, and they're generally rebels without causes.

I would like to commend the North Carolina government for reaching out in the spirit of unity to find common ground with the ANC.  By defying american standards on electoral distracting, North Carolina is bravely standing beside their south African brethren in opposing the tyranny of the American federal government and their myopic view of what democracy should be.

Best home of opposite century, too. Few other states could stretch an annual special event over a full hundred years of consecutive days.

Sad thing is, the last good governor we had turned out to be a crook. The state Democratic Party here used to make Chicago look like small-time grifters. They embezzled, they cut nepotistic deals, they gerrymandered the map, and they shielded their own from prosecution. But for all that, they did a good job running the state. We had good schools, good roads, manageable tax and debt levels, and a decent economy. Not saying it was perfect, but it was functioning. They held power for 100 years. And then the Tea Partiers swept them out of power, and proceeded to inhabit the Capitol like a pack of chimps that escaped the zoo, breaking everything, flinging poo at the walls and screeching loudly.

Our schools and university system have fallen hard. We went from 25th in teacher pay to 47th. We lost a ton of good teachers who fled to other states. We've fallen to 48th in per-pupil spending.

We've slashed DOT funding, and state agencies have been forced by law to outsource more and more of their core functions to private firms (typically owned by friends and campaign donors), regardless of the cost savings, or total lack thereof.

We banned coastal communities from even considering projected sea level rises in their planning. We outlawed sales of Tesla electric cars. We killed subsidies to alternative energy because that was "unfair" (but funnelling state business to a golfing buddy's company is totes legit).

Basically, these parasites got into power and are sucking the state dry to line their own pockets. I would be happy to see every last one of them tarred, feathered, then flayed alive and their dripping corpses hung over Fayetteville Street as a warning to future would-be robber barons, regardless of affiliation.

The amusing part is, even with one-party rule, they can't get shit done. Because there's a fair number of old-school Republicans in the legislature who have fought the crazy ones on the worst stuff (like trying to establish an official state religion).

I wish I could believe that 2016 would see these rat bastards flushed into the sewer of history, but we have a LOT of stupid people in this state who will vote for anything with an (R) after its name, regardless of the candidate's record or qualifications. Which is how we wind up with guys like Rev. "Let's laser Tijuana" mentioned previously.

Honestly, I don't care if we elect two Republican Senators, and 13 Republicans to the House and we go so red in the Presidential election that we can be seen from space -- as long as we get the Republicans away from the steering wheel of the state. All the blue in the Federal realm won't help us any if the state legislature leaves nothing but a gutted husk of a once-proud state.
