A New Hampshire state rep has apparently claimed that the Pope is the Antichrist.

See this is one of the reasons I still follow some political news, even though I feel like my vote matters less and less every second. It's reached Alice in Wonderland levels of surreality and craziness. Donald Trump for President? State reps publicly saying that religious authorities are the Antichrist?

Is this the real life? Or is this fantasy?

She said (also seems to imply that the founders of the US are) the Protestant Church thinks the pope is the anti-christ. If anyone is aware of the Scottish sketch show "Chewin' the Fat", there is a particular sketch for when people point out the obvious, though it is rather offensive. I'd really like the reporter to have done that though. There's even a sketch in which they do it about God! /not really relevant

Referencing a Protestant view on the Catholics is like asking a KKK member about Martin Luther King.
There's a "Protestant Church"?

As a catholic I gotta say that's unfair to 99.9999% of prodies.

It's barely infiltration at this point.  We've practically taken the country.  The tipping point was when we blackmailed Stevens off the bench and got him replaced by one of our jewish allies.  Now there are no prodies left on the bench to object when the supreme court elects Rubio to be the president and he enacts the theocracy that JFK originally planned.

We never really trusted Alito's loyalty of course.  Now he wont be a problem.

Thankfully, the Protestant God struck down Scalia and Obama will appoint a crypto-Muslim to replace him.

In other news, Cruz is firing his communications director after a video was put out by his campaign twisting a Rubio interview to make it look like he was dissing the Bible. Rick Tyler is a grade-A ass, so it'll be interesting to see who replaces him.

Not that many, I imagine. But I lived in Scotland, where you have people singing sectarian songs at soccer matches and kicking fuck out folk because they're papists/huns. There was also The Troubles in Ireland.

I've also met people on both sides who utterly loathed the other purely because they held a different view, saying they're all prejudiced bastards without noting the irony.

I know this isn't representative of all religious folks, but there's enough of them to give the rest a bad name by association.

I'm also throwing in my distasteful view on religion in general, so I'm inclined to embellish that they're all mental :P

@RedKing re "Protestant Church": that's what the article says she said. It's stupid on multiple levels, and this lady is a fucking politician, presumably voted in by other people!

Oh ho ho ho....you've just gotten acquainted with American politics, I see. There should be a website called "Shit My Elected Official Says".

FWIW, the Catholic/Protestant divide is barely a ripple in most parts of the US. There may be some exceptions in the Deep, Deep South or amonge fringe Protestant denominations, but by and large nobody gives a shit.

In other news, Bob Dole endorsed Marco Rubio. Very. Slowly. Dole looks like the Viagra may be the only thing keeping him upright. Kinda sad.

Huh, PredictWise gives a 60% chance to a democrat winning the presidency but gives a 57% chance to Clinton winning and a 5% chance of Sanders winning.  So it's a 60% chance whose parts add up to 62%.  I wonder how complicated it would be to make money from this.

On the topic of election polls, I recently listened to a very interesting NPR talk about polling that might shed some light on some of the interesting polls we've been seeing. Apparently this particular election is a horrible year for polling, previous elections had a large number of people that responded to polls, but due to the recent outbreak of cell phone usage and cell phone only people the amount of people that are actually reached and respond to polls has dropped an absurd amount. According to the statistics by the guy from the stat's center that they were listening too, current response numbers have dropped from about 80% of all people questioned responding 8 years ago down to around 8% of people polled actually responding. He also noted that in general for election polls about the amount of responses that they need is around 10%. This bias also hits younger voters double; since they are much more often the ones that are cell phone only and thus are not actually polled often (and accounts at least somewhat for differences of candidates with strong younger bases).

He went on to emphasize that at least for all of the polls that were passing through his statistical gathering organization for this particular election year, very few of them actually had enough data of the right kinds to have any real connections to what the final elections are going to look like, which is really messing up the presses since in the vast majority of past elections the polls have had enough data to be somewhat accurate, to the point that press organizations have come to depend on them.

The big takeaway was that unlike past elections (and future elections too most likely, he mentioned many people working to solve the problem currently) in this particular election polls really have very little connection to the actual way people are going to vote, even less so than usual, and he begged people to only take them at the barest of guidelines to the way things are actually going to turn out, if that.

Just thought it was something interesting that I should share.

Like they say, the first step is admitting the problem.  Damn shame that it's considered radical and angry to say it like it is.

See, that's why you set your timeline to private and carefully pick who you have as friends on there. Like in meatspace, avoiding confrontation is as simple as avoiding confrontational people. Except it's easier on Facebook because you can make it literally impossible for them to even see your profile.

snip

There are some structural headwinds for the polling industry but so far the pollsters have actually been getting pretty close to the mark.  The big misses are the national polls seem to underestimate Sanders by a few points, Trump lost Iowa and Rubio tanked in New Hampshire.  But those could be explained by differences in voters who make up their minds towards the end, something that is substantiated by exit polls.

Internet panel polls are also promising when looking towards the future.

In other news, interesting list of expenses:

18 million dollars on staff and consultants.  18 million.

I do seem to remember a post on 538 (or PEC?) during the last election cycle about the increasing reliability of internet polls. They have the same challenge as advertisers, viz, getting people to click through and spend time. Also the challenge of reaching a more diverse polling base than any one site's particular echo chamber. But overall it can't be worse than relying on fewer and fewer corded phone users.
