Something more freeform- less rules in terms of the framing of the questions, perhaps, but the same rules about civility and addressing beliefs and not people.

Thanks Orange Wizard, looking forward to that thread.  Also, good job everyone - I think this thread turned out very well.  Probably thanks to the unusual rules, but also most people showed a lot of restraint and civility.

Bump.

I think the new thread should have a spiteful atheist moderator to ensure objectivity.

I recommend Objective then. As far as being non-subjective goes, they is simply the best there is.

Slightly revamping the thread now that I'm back, however temporarily that may be.  Check the OP for details.

Question for Jewish people, who I don't think we've heard from sadly...  What exactly happens to gentiles (non-Jews) after death?  Simple non-existence?

Edited for embarassing unintended double-negative.

i don't think jewish religion teaches about afterlife, and the book doesn't talk much about it, so people believe whatever makes them feel good. i think the official position is that worrying too much about the afterlife is a waste of time, just be a good jew for god and the comunity
it's been over a decade since i met a jew and talked about this stuff, and we were both pimply teenagers euphoric on our own intelligence

So I had an interesting thought, specifically directed toward the Judeo/Christian/Muslim demographic and more specifically toward any parts of that group that believe in angels.

Basically, I vaguely remember reading something that made it sound like angels were basically robots, in the "can't actually think for themselves" way.

So I got to wondering what those who actually believe in such things think about this, and if anyone could pin down some verses or somesuch that reflect on the issue one way or the other.

There's not a whole lot to go on with angels, really. We know that Satan and 1/3 of the angels rebelled against God, so I wouldn't say they're "basically robots" - they do have at least the appearance of autonomy. Unfortunately the whole free will argument is kinda funky when it comes to Christianity in general, so...

... you wouldn't happen to have verse for that rebellion bit, would you?

It's in Revelation, so YMMV. I'll find it in a moment.

E: Revelation 12. Doesn't specify one-third, I've no idea where that comes from.

Doesn't even specify rebellion :P

The wording in it actually looks like it's suggesting the dragon's faction was attacked, of all things. Then purged, when they attempted to defend themselves.

... also isn't revelations, like. Supposedly prophecy or something? Something that has yet to happen?

E: If so, that would have to suck for a lot of folks that have paid attention to that bit. They die, kick on up top, and have a seven headed chromatic dragon just kinda' chillin' by the pearly gates. "Sup." in seven headed draconic stereo. "You expected Michael, but it was me, DIO Shaitan!"
