What do you think of the new format?

I like it better than the last one
It's good, but I don't see the need with the discussion thread
It's not going to go anywhere good, just lock it now.

It looks like this thread is a bit better managed than the previous few, so PTW.

Agreed, so far...  Fingers crossed...

I just sent a PM to sign up as an atheist and dubious animist.  I'm confident that there is no God in the typical sense (No all-powerful creator who designed and interferes with our world).  I perceive a spirit in the earth, forests, and particularly thunderstorms.  I pray to it, Gaia, but I don't claim that it's real, just comforting.

BTW, my previous post regarding Discordianism and SubGenius is now about three times as long, so anybody who already read it and was interested in what it had to say might want to go back and reread it.

Overly Draconian, you say, Rolan...

Let's take a vote.

That was just my first impression, it seems to be working out pretty well so far.

That was mostly a joke, and I broke the rules of my own thread by making it ::)

Anyway.

Rolan7: Could you explain, in brief, what animism is, I'm not familiar religions that aren't monotheistic, Hinduism, or Buddhism.

I'm available to answer questions. Former backsliding Presbyterian, now agnostic.
I can amswer questions about Discordianism and the Church of the SubGenius BTW
Yes, I'll add both of you.  No, I'm not happy with the violation of rule 1.  It's the weekend, so I'm able to check this thread much more often than I would otherwise.  But there's a reason I asked for pm's.

Sorry for being so strict about this, I'm trying to make the thread work and that means I have to stick to the rules I make.  There's a signup list not so that people can't participate, but so that people don't feel obligated to participate in conversation and won't kabitz when in an angry state about something someone said, which has the potential to lead to bad things.  The rules are here either for the thread's safety, the safety of those being asked questions, or my own sanity, and rule 1 is a bit of the first and a lot of the third.

Rule 9 has been modified to cover non-report-worthy incidents.  I will likely clean up the rules tomorrow into a more readable format.

I just wanted to say I am good with the rules and think they are needed. (also I hope I don't get in trouble for posting this.)

That's something I should add to the OP... comments about things like the rules or my decisions as OP are acceptable, what I'm trying to avoid is freeform religious discussion which turns into debate which turns into locked/hammered threads and an angry Toad.  Also, trying to avoid idle derails.

... so for bystanders who aren't particularly interested (or able, I suppose) in taking questions, but might be able to drop a short answer for something... pipe up? Stay quiet? Etc.

S'like with stuff like that animism question -- personally, I'm not really enough of anything in particular when it comes to religious beliefs to sign up for questions, but little things like that are pretty easy to snipe up, if whoever the actual question is directed to doesn't get to it particularly quickly, or at all.

*coughs* Incidentally, it's a general belief that various whatevers (rivers, rocks, forests, animals, places, sometimes people, etc., etc., etc. -- particulars vary by belief system) have spirits of some sort "in" them, or actually are gods/spirits/whatever. Basically that everything has a little bit of divinity in it, that may or may not manifest, influence the world... it's a very broad thing.

Generally, some form of animism is believed to have been the form that the original religious beliefs took. Most later ones show signs of having developed from anthropomorphised natural phenomena (which you could probably call "animism in three words"), as well -- Zeus coming from storms, the christian god sharing traits of previous sun gods (among other things), egypt's mix of man and animal divinities, native american stuff, there's a whole bunch of so ons and so forths.

And, as often is true, wikipedia has something to say on the subject.

This is... a very good point.

I'm too tired to think about this tonight, I'll get back to you sometime tomorrow, but your answer will probably be closer to "pipe up" than "stay quiet".
