Do research on ways of training dogs to not bite friendlies. Also grab the DNA of a grisly bear's sense of smell and shove it in there.
((Did you know a grizzly bear can smell like four weeks into the past?))
I learn something new every day.
As do you. For example you learn that internet is not available here. While we have superluminal communication it still isn't instantaneous. Round trip to closest server takes a hour.
We don't have in particular dog training manuals in our databases, but we do have large amount of papers dedicated to how to domesticate animals. Most are based on Earth animals, but there's few theoretical papers about domesticating extra terrestrial species. Let's say you found something. Not exactly what you are looking for, but close enough.
As a reminder, you don't have that high nutrition slurry for you puppies when they are "born". Not anything to feed them with. You have only so many hands.
Now this enhanced sense of smell, this is more traditional gene modding and all related components are Earth origin so it isn't a problem.
Start wearing envirosuit, go outside.
You already are, for both account. As result of you shooting practice.
Go to the river east of the base.
There ain't any rivers nearby. The area where base ships are is a kilometer wide opening, surrounded by forest and hills. We moved the base few hundred kilometers to east, remember?
Red team
"Oh! There's something in the brook! I wonder if it's one of those strange ray-like creatures we found at our base site?"
Point out the thing.
You point it out, but closer look reveals it is not the same. It is about size of your palm.
"Fish with legs. Cool..." Micah says slowly. "Still ain't most awesome thing here."
Try to follow the group while reading the book.
Yeah, ignore the animal. The book goes now into detailed descriptions about those injuries explaining how bad effects will be if not treated fast enough. It includes videos of all scenarios. It ain't pretty.
"I agree with Schultz, let's not cross the water until we find the end of this passage."
Mark the way back, making sure it's on the left wall like they said, then keep heading forward.
Cromwell marks the left wall as he were instructed, and Cole nods approvingly.
The team then continues forward. They mark walls periodically, plant signal booster once and geologists gather few samples from walls. You spot those legged fishes few times in the water, but they swim away fast making capture impossible. Half hour later team arrives into
another fork. This time it cuts off the path with small brook, or more like a ditch, from north. And few meter afterwards the main brook switches to northern side of tunnel. So far rather uneventful trip. Hopefully other team had better luck.
"Looks like we have to wet our boots. Magnetic field gets steadily stronger as we walk."
Green team
If it is a sea monster I hope it isnt as aggresive as some of the other critters
Follow team with caution
Your only hope it is larger than this tunnel.
Briana takes the air quality meter from doctor Helios and runs around with it for a while, trying to determine which direction team should go. Eventually she figures east might be best choice. So there you go.
Amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide in air drops fast until the meter can't even measure C
2O anymore. On other hand amount of this unkown gas keeps rising up, reaching 5%. And then you enter into a cave.
Walls, roof and partially floor is covered in pink smoky crystals. On back of the cave, near roof is a one particularly large crystal; half meter long hexagonal pillar pointing at floor in middle of the cave. On its each side grows large amount of more hexagonal crystals, giving it a fractal structure. Rest of crystals seem to cover surface area radially from it, as if this large one were point of origin. Briana is literally jumping from joy.
"Oh my god ohmygod this is so awesome! Space crystals!"
"Eh, I'm dissappointed. Where's my monster?"
"But it is eating oxygen and carbon dioxide! It kinda is a monster! Don't you get it? This is sooo awesome!"
Briana then kneels next to one small crystal and pulls out some devices out of her backbag.
You left from outpost at 9:00. Time is now ~10:30.
White grid in the map divides area into manageable chunks. Crossing each white line means walking for half hour, so time flies fast here.
