I was once served a "hog fry" at a cookout. From the context of the thread you can probably guess which part of the pig it was. It was delicious and I had another.

How interesting, as lambsfry isn't testes, it's usually liver and sweetbread (which I believe is the pancreas)..... oh, no, wait, Wikipedia tells me that in the U.S. you don't identify things such as lights (the animal lungs) and sweetbread and kidneys and other offal by name, but put them all under the category "fry". How interesting. Does this mean you can't buy a bag of seperate kidneys for breakfast cooking, but have to buy the offal all combined? Probably not, I guess. I'm told it's the world of packaged food over there.

The U.S. and the Americas seem such a terrifying place, though    I hear such stories on international forums, that I have assumed they're some sort of bad-story-bioaccumulator. Never believe everything you read on the web! {grin}

I just find it really bizarre that Toady saw fit to make a "Professional Testicles Remover" job title, rather than lumping gelding under "Animal Caretaker" or any of the other similar job titles.  Like...really?  That's what a dwarf defines their profession as?  That's the only job they do, remove animal testicles?  Even Veterinarians in today's highly-specialized job fields don't just castrate animals.  There's no one who only does that one job to the point that their job title is "Grand Master Gelder."

I think the point was to create risk that wasnt tied to other jobs, and since even milking is its own skill . . .

....So I need seven for a wish. That means I need... four male dragons? Best not to geld them till you get a breeding set going. Or do dragons have more balls than other beasts?

I'm pretty sure they don't actually allow you to geld beasts with a cloaca (lizards and birds count as not geldable, so dragons probably are in the same boat) but it is an amusing idea anyhow.

Yes.  Especially since slaughtering doesn't seem to have its own skill, probably because slaughtering is currently instantaneous and has no chance of failure.

I think it would make more sense if animals that were about to be slaughtered or gelded had a chance of attacking their handler, or even freaking out and going wild temporarily (the system used for tantrums could be used here).  The skill that universally represents handling nervous animals and keeping them under control could be the currently-unused 'Animal Caretaker'.

Animal doctors are not currently implemented, but once they are, it would make sense that all animal surgery, including gelding, should probably fall under the same category as regular doctor activities, as well as involving the Animal Caretaker skill to take into account the fact that they are being performed on a non-sapient creature.

They do attack their handlers while being gelded, I haven't seen any especially skilled gelders but I imagine it influences the odds.

I have a professional gelder in my fort. Fortunately he is also a pretty decent marksdwarf.

I haven't had any mishaps with gelding, him doing it or anyone else. I haven't done it much though. But I have been buying livestock now and getting the best specimens so I can have a selective breeding program.

Man, dfhack needs to be available for 40.19. My area rains elf blood a lot and it is all over the place. Maybe it would be unfair to clean it since it has a notable impact on my dwarves. I put both platinum and a artifact bone statues in the meeting hall/dining hall/well room to try and cheer the poor guys up and I am seeing an actual increase in positive moods.

This new update is a must, even without Dwarf Therapist of dfhack.

It definitely works. I kept only strong males around, no changes in children being fat or weak or not. Kept only the strongest females, and I mostly got strong children. This was with dogs and grizzlies.
