OOC Thread

You and your companions' wanderings have brought you to the town square of Atgrove, a hamlet in the country of Kanrosp, to the western side of the Rebian Peninsula. You are on your way to the metropolis of Kansria, the capital of the country, seeking excitement and adventure. However, it is late, and Kansria is more than a hundred miles north of here. You would do well to relax here for a while and perhaps see if any of the town's inhabitants are in need of your assistance; after all, bandits are seemingly always present in this kind of place, and perhaps there are great secrets hidden somewhere out in the countryside.

You stand at a four-way intersection, meeting at a large, stone-paved plaza. There is a fountain in the center of the square; buildings surround it, including what appears to be an inn. There are also several townsfolk milling about.

"Oho, THOKWALD knows his place when he sees it," Thokwald chuckled, "and THOKWALD's place today is deep in his cups, deep in a nice lady, or deep in the guts of a foe, and THOKWALD sees only one of those here."

To yonder inn, purchase a pint of ale and inquire about work for a man and his sword.

Ooh-Ha grunts and jumps into the fountain to scrub himself down. It's been a while since he's bathed.

Cast Detect Magic and spend 3 rounds scanning the crowd.

After that run in with the hedge wizard, Vanitate had been careful to do this before anything else. Other magic-users took notoriously poorly to having their thoughts scrutinized or tampered with. Really, being here, in settlement as large as this was probably too dangerous, much more so then his normal haunts.

If I don't detect anything besides the magic items the other PCs are carrying

Interesting. The... THING having the bath in the fountain is carrying some magical items. So was the crazy-eyed one heading towards the inn. And the armoured fellow has a ring. These ones will make excellent pawns. Three in one place... This was an auspicious beginning.

Follow the crazy-eyed one, surreptitiously.[Unless my earlier detect magic uncovered anything else interesting, in which case follow up on that.]

That one looked useful, but unstable. Best keep his distance.

You enter the inn. The bottom floor is, as is par for the course, a tavern; there are countless, crowded tables between wooden walls and beneath lofty rafters. In the back of the bar, next to the bar itself, there is a staircase that seems to go up several floors; the building looked to be around four stories from the outside. You look around and see a rowdy crowd; notably, you see a dwarf having a discussion with a man who appears to be a wizard, a red-haired man with no shirt on fist-fighting with a man who appears to be a soldier, and a rather nervous-looking man sitting at the bar, drinking while looking around in a manner that is both furtive and frightened.
Ooh-Ha grunts and jumps into the fountain to scrub himself down. It's been a while since he's bathed.
Several people eye you both nervously and disdainfully, but none of them approach, likely as a result of your massive, intimidating bulk.
-snip-
There are no magic items nearby, aside from those three guys' things.

Anyway, you follow THOKWALD into the inn and nearly walk into him when he abruptly stops at the door.

Sidle past the crazy-eyed one and go to the stool next to the nervous person and inquire about his situation politely[Make Diplomacy/Whatever else would be applicable check.].

<>My pardon, sir, but I could not help but notice you seem to be in some degree of stress. Might I be of assistance, being of modest ability in the solving of problems, delicate or otherwise?<>

This one looks interesting. He's either waiting for someone, hiding from someone or hiding something. All of those potential situations could be turned to Vanitate's advantage.

At the sound of scuffing feet behind him, Thokwald glances over his shoulder, "Is okay little man, THOKWALD is often mistaken for doors. Also, walls, horses, and other large objects."

Walking further in, Thokwald snorts disdainfully at the fist-fighters, casually making his way towards the nervous man. He thumps a meaty arm down on the bar, shouting for an ale.

The man, middle aged and with a thin, timid face, is slightly frightened as you sit down, but relaxes shortly after.

"AAAAaaahh... oh... thank the gods... I... no, all of us... we need help... th--the bandits... aah..."

THOKWALD's presence seems to frighten him once more.

"AAAAAHHhhhhwait... my apologies... I thought you w--were a bandit. Can... can either of you help... help us...? Th... they burned my house down... they've been raiding the village for weeks..."

Search the fountains quickly for a few copper or silver before heading into the tavern as well. It may be custom not to take wishing coins, but there's no law against it and I need a drink.

Thokwald's eyes practically glow as he turns to stare at the nervous man, "Bandits, you say? Why, bandits are THOKWALD's twelfth-favorite thing to kill, right behind sniveling cowards! Do go on, you have caught THOKWALD's interest."

"Oh, look at that. A tavern filled with people drinking far too much for far too little gain. How delightful. Have I missed anything Large one?"

Bandits. How pedestrian. And pathetic. Murder had never been Vanitate's strong suit. But neither was it foreign to him. Killing an entire group of them, on the other hand, could be problematic, especially if they had any kind of magical back-up to counter killing them all in their sleep while magically muffled.

<>I believe that I and this... THOKWALD can indeed deal with your problem, given some time to get some additional backup.<>

The pawn bathing in the fountain would probably come in handy right about now. Vanitate glances over his shoulder at the armoured pawn entering the inn. He could also be useful, provided he was steered correctly.

"Oh, look at that. A tavern filled with people drinking far too much for far too little gain. How delightful. Have I missed anything Large one?"

<>I rather think that about sums it up. This one here says that bandits are a great trouble to him. The... THOCKWALD here and myself were just agreeing to deal with them.<>

There. If this one is motivated by profit or bloodlust, the hook should be set. Or he could be a knight or something of that kind. In which case bandits terrorizing poor innocent dirt grubbers would work just as well. Although, what Vanitate HAD learned from his years in the countryside, was that the dirt grubbers were rarely innocent. He mentally filed the little man as a possible conspirator with the bandits and decided to check his mind later. If they were in collusion... Those that are cut from the same cloth. Are fit to hang from the same rope.

Thokwald glares at the sleazy rat on the other side of the coward, pounding his other arm onto the bar for emphasis, "THOKWALD can hear extra 'C' in pronunciation of THOKWALD's name, little man. Last person what make mistake insert D, call THOKWALD 'THOKDWALD'. THOKWALD did not like the D, and THOKWALD did terrible things to that man. THOKWALD suggest you remedy error," he concludes, turning to glare down the bar.

"On other note, WHERE IS THOKWALD'S ALE!? Is THOKWALD's coin not good as any other?"

Turning back just as swiftly, Thokwald addresses the coward, "And aye, littler man, THOKWALD can take care of puny bandit problem, with or without others. THOKWALD enjoy a good fight, but THOKWALD enjoy good fight more with a sweet end to it, and sweet ends can make bad fight less bitter, like honey in wine what has gone half to vinegar. What say you?"

"If we try to travel around here we'll have to deal with these bandits regardless. It would be prudent to handle it now I think. If you decide to destroy them I will be right behind." Diogenes stated absently as he observed man requesting their help.

After Thokwald's upstart Diogenes felt the need to say something "Why do you care how they pronounce your name? A name doesn't mean anything. It's certainly nothing to get worked up about."

"Is matter of implication," Thokwald asserts, "'K' sound deep and guttural, from back of throat. Is family tradition. 'CK' sound like puny man what is gagging at THOKWALD's manly odor of sweat, sex, blood, and mead. Also cinnamon."
