Lars nodded.  "I can understand that.  In terms of ground forces, we have 1,379 robotic Sod troopers available, and we could send every one of them this way as soon as an agreement is reached.  More are in production as well.  In terms of static defenses and fleet coverage, what exactly are you looking for?  We can accommodate your needs if those needs are made clear to us."

Lars also sends a message to Hephaestus.  ((That's going in the Heph thread.))

More bold text.

@Miyamoto, private comms:  "This guy is asking for a lot. Not that that is unreasonable of him. But it might be a good idea to ensure they will provide what Hephaestus requires. Which means we should also ask them what they can provide. Because the more qualified workers and specialised equipment they can provide, the faster we can can build what they need. Because I think Steve had Hephaestus running on a skeleton crew when we left it."

Ask Steve: "Do you think there's any chance the UWM will try to build another 'Steve'? And if yes, how bad would that be?"

((Will edit quote of you giving me the map and phrasebook later.))

>Everyone who was around when I was made is either dead or part of me. They may try, but I've been careful to make such efforts more difficult if they do. We'll have to see, but if they do make a copy of me, we'll have to destroy it immediately. One of me is already one too many, wouldn't you say?

Keep watching until Jim has a reason not to, i.e. he sees something unusual or something in the room requires his immediate attention.
You keep glancing around but for the moment everything seems fine.

The center man looks over towards the man on his left, the first man you spoke to.
"We have ground forces enough to drive them from the planet now, and we would instate a draft or some similar measure should we need to. Ground forces should be accounted for, though your assistance is appreciated, of course. Our true fear is of their ships. We are not a waring society by nature, our armada is limited to a handful of peace keeping ships. Planetary purges..." He stops and then, after a moment, starts again, "We are not so arrogant as to believe ourselves invaluable or irreplaceable. We fear not for the sake of ourselves or our government, truly if we did we would have never spoken to you,  but we cannot allow a holocaust to be visited upon our citizens. We need some way to defend against their ships."

Out of curiosity why would that be so terrible? I'm not all filled in on lore.)

Lars sends a very quick message to Steve.  "Can I show footage of the firing of the Hammer during the defense?"

Lars paused a moment to think.  This wasn't his strong area.  "We are constructing the necessary facilities to build FTL-capable ships as we speak.  Beyond ships, we have also constructed static defenses around the warp point and can do the same for you.  Turrets and mines and the like.  As far as planetary defenses, we have successfully used a planet-based cannon capable of destroying large incoming ships."

Say above.  If Steve approves, say below.

"We can show you footage of its capabilities if you like."

((Can't exactly help you IC, but from OOC it seems good. If promising ships, chokepoints and giant cannons doesn't do it, nothing will.

Hmm. I'm suddenly wishing we could send a new expedition to that planetoid to get a sample of that crystalmonster with its shield. Having a planetary shield would sure help...

Hey pw, would this be at all possible? Or is that planetoid long gone? And what about others?))

Renen talks in private with Miya.

Maybe we should offer them to a way to get the citizens out of this planet very fast too. They seem to be a state that values their citizens, so a way for defense and for flight may be a good offer. It's up to you.

>Go for it, but tell them what they're seeing is secret and they should keep it under their fancy hats.

They listen and watch the video steve feeds you of the cannon. They seem suitably impressed, the hard frown lines on their face softening slightly with relief.

"How long until such things can be set up here?" The man in the center asks.

As this is going on, a servant slips silently out from what appears to be the door to the kitchen, shuffles across the room and  kneels next to the man on the left. He whispers something to the man, and the man whispers back and then the servant scuttles away.  At a break in the conversation the man on the left whispers to the man in the center and they both resume frowning.

"Your presence has not gone unnoticed it seems" The man in the center says, quietly.

Apparently that thing about travels and family everyone keeps asking you is just a customary greeting, not an actual question and lars looks kinda silly for answering. Heh.

Private link back.
"It seems like they might be convinced without offering that though. And a golden rule in bartering is to never offer more than you have to. After all, if we promise this that's another drain on our resources. But if it seems they might not pull through after all, then this might be used to tip the scales in our balance. So, a good idea, but let's keep it as a backup for now."

And back again:
Quote
Thing is though, we have no idea about the layout of this building, so this might be the most fortified location they had available. And if they have a secret bomb shelter or so nearby, i think they'll call upon that when they think it's necessary. They'd need it more than us after all.

But you are very right about being proactive. Jim, you and me need to stay on our toes, to intervene should shit hit the fan.

Charge a dex bonus. This is to be used for a 'reaction shot' of sorts in case we get attacked or other bad shit happens. Use said reaction by using manip to protect the delegates and my team from danger (eg pushing away debris, creating force dome shield, whatever).

Lars nodded at his words.  "I will have to check with our engineering team; the one you see here was built on our factory world in less than a year.  It may take a bit longer to get the needed supplies to this fine planet."

As he continued, Lars frowned.  "Our team is ready to defend if you need us."

Talk.  Offer assistance.
