The persecution will continue. And the religious right will continue to play the victim when called out on it.  And the American public will shrug and tacitly side with them...
If I haven't said so already, you have my greatest sympathies for living in the US. But please be aware that it isn't like that everywhere.

Quote
Freedom of speech is the political right to communicate one's opinions and ideas using one's body and property to anyone who is willing to receive them. The term freedom of expression is sometimes used synonymously, but includes any act of seeking, receiving and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used.

Every government restricts speech to some degree. Common limitations on speech relate to: libel, slander, obscenity, pornography, sedition, hate speech, classified information, copyright violation, trade secrets, non-disclosure agreements, right to privacy, right to be forgotten, and campaign finance reform. Whether these limitations can be justified under the harm principle depends upon whether influencing a third party's opinions or actions adversely to the second party constitutes such harm or not.

The term "offense principle" is also used to expand the range of free speech limitations to prohibit forms of expression where they are considered offensive to society, special interest groups or individuals. For example, freedom of speech is limited in many jurisdictions to widely differing degrees by religious legal systems, religious offense or incitement to ethnic or racial hatred laws.
Well, yeah? Why?

.-. There isn't even that much persecution here compared to some other nations

Like North Korea for example

It's not exactly free speech if (some) speech is prosecutable.
Free speech in the US is a fairly specific legal construct, citribrethren. Puff's blurb covers the broad strokes fairly well.

As to the why, because shit like trying to drum up a mob to go murder people is something the law should prosecute. Similarly, outright slander and character assassination is something that should be prosecutable under -- at least -- civil law. And things like screaming fire or bomb in a crowded room, when nothing of the sort is there, is a clear and present attempt to cause straight up physical harm to people. In most ways, in most places, speech is and should be unlimited, but there's some stuff that just doesn't ruddy fly under any circumstance.

And that's a principle recognized by US civil and criminal law, which in regards to this particular tangent was what mattered :P

E: Though, if you want a more in-depth discussion, give GD a search. The topic's come up more than once over the years, and has been fairly thoroughly treated a handful of times.

"Things are better than in North Korea" is a depressing argument, but sure.
The USA isn't literally the most intolerant state in the world.
In fact it's quite tolerable.

I should clarify that I'm not saying countries should allow completely unrestricted free speech.

How about "It's better than GB"? They have media blackouts and people can sue to not have something talked about ever under threat of prosecution. I remember hearing baout something like that about a football player.

The Jewish aren't exactly Christians
No, you're right. The Christian faith used Judaism as its foundation, and shaped itself around it. But the Gods are fairly similar. If you want a Christian example, what about the French Huguenots? They certainly didn't get a lot of good out of it.

It also doesn't help that it was Christian against Christian.

I honestly never understood why Christians would fight Christians
And as for when that happens I don't think god likes picking sides and just let's that stuff settle itself
