A scout tumbles down the stairs, picks himself back up and yells out to one of his commanders (his ears are obviously either blown out or close to it),"Sir, one of the mortar tubes has blown up. What should we do?"

Send one of my demo men with him to monitor the condition of the 2 tubes to prevent it happening again. Send the other 3 to ensure every ground floor entrance but the main doors I'm at is completely sealed.

(i thought you were on second floor and closed off the stairways but one chokepoint.....)

You chop down several zed until you are almost over powered by five that fight you all at once.
At that moment you hear several gunshots that take down three of them and you take out the other two.
You look back and see two men from your teams and three scouts standing in a firing line formation
One man from your team looks at you,"Got your back boss"

Zed begins to slowly pour into the entrance
You can hear people lining up at the firing line and even a few other soldiers near you with melee weapons ready (it's a wide entrance to the stairs)

Have a squad of my guard join me in melee, form the firing line out of  2 squads of older scouts less likely to panic. Have medics, demos and the officer squad spread amongst scout units to reassure them.

The rest of my guard moves from place to place in squads bolstering whatever position is hardest hit.

Almost half an hour of shooting and slicing till zed stops coming in

The pile of bodies has blockaded the entrance
There is still gunfire and mortar fire from the above floors
