A Baltimore police unit has systematically robbed suspects, and sold confiscated dugs for years.
Two officers of the Baltimore Gun Trace Task Force have been found guilty past monday of armed robbery, extortion, embezzlement of government funds, and a list of other crimes.
They can face up to 60 years in prison.

According to the prosecutor, the members of the GTTF operated as both police and robbers at the same time.
The unit's task was to keep weapons from falling into criminal hands, but the officers mainly used their authority to extort and rob black people living in Baltimore.

One of the two convicted cops, Marcus Taylkor, participated on a raid where the team stole 100k dollars in cash. They took the suspect's home keys, entered his appartment, and found a safe in the cellar with 200k cash. They took it, put 100k back, and then proceeded to make a video acting like they just discovered the safe.

In the same way they robbed a lot of crime suspects. The victims were too afraid, or too criminal to report it to the police.
On a few occasions however, they also robbed completely innocent people. A married couple lost 20k, when they were wrongfully placed under arrest and their home was ransacked for money.

Six other members of the squad had already plead guilty, in exchange for reduced sentence.
Some of those testified against their colleagues. They testified to searching homes without a warrant, and driving groups of people apart using their cars, to arrest and search them.
They also testified to selling confiscated drugs, without fear of getting caught. "It was all part of our culture".

The officers furthermore earned extra money by acting as security guards during drug deals, and by declaring overtime while they were in fact in the pub, or on holidays.
They also planted drugs and illegal firearms in people's homes to extort them.

Cellphones should obviously be banned. If the guy hadn't had a cellphone, none of this would have happened /s

But really, police needs to get their act together. If shit like this keeps appening a few more years, you'll get to a situation where coloured people can freely shoot cops without legal repercussions, because any lawyer will get a case against them dropped because they 'acted in self-defense out of genuine fear for their life'.

No offense martinuzz, but police have been murdering black guys for profit and kicks for as long as modern policing has existed. There's not going to be any seachange now, certainly not in the legal realm.

Well, yes, but the internet, and social media outrage isn't as old as modern policing.

Yes, but such outrage is only so effective and in many places police have extra legal privilege via legislative motion past and present.

Also consider this: six dead police officers have received more press, to my attention, than 100+ dead civilians shot by cops. They are still viewed as protectors by many in America, and that would take a long time to change, though I do see some shift.

pretty sure it's longer than modern policing has existed, but eh

That said, right now, no. I'd give decent odds that, everything else staying steady-ish, fifty years from now or sooner will be a different conversation at the absolute least so far as stateside goes, though. Shit is not going to last all that long once majority minority kicks in and manages to finish unfucking the situation re: political repression. Maybe earlier depending on how fed up more techborn generations get with (lacking) body cam et al and the mess they make more obvious.

Fifty years ago, the civilians were doing it too. Fifty years from now, the children of these people are going to be doing the same thing.
