Let's hear it for South Carolina as a leader in combating racism and police brutality!

Yeah, I never thought I'd hear that sentence either.

It's only a phase. And only because somebody caught the whole damn thing on video. Without that, you know damn well Charleston PD isn't going to investigate.

I think we should just let South Carolina annex North Carolina. They're obviously the best Carolina.

Them's lynching words around here.

And sadly, things are trending in that direction on a number of fronts. The NC legislature seems hell-bent on taking us back 200 years.

EDIT: And more details are coming out indicating that I nailed it as far as what led to the altercation at that Texas pool party: White people (adults in this case) all worked up that those "Section 8" kids were using their pool.

Well, duh. The progress is that solid video proof was all it took to get the guy charged with murder instead of a slap on the wrist.  ::)

Some good news.  The officer who is now famous for acting like a living parody of modern police work while breaking up a pool party has resigned.

Yeah, that guy was way out of line. The rest of the police response seemed reasonable for a 911 call of mass trespassing and a fight or two, though.

I wonder if Rolan7 will argue that the police's actions were entirely justified.:p
Hell no, that officer was highly unprofessional and ineffective.  Glad he resigned.
Not that the kids should have been crowding around him like that, but yeesh.  He definitely mishandled that situation.  And I don't know for sure, but striking the girl seemed completely uncalled for.  He was trying to cow them into compliance, got frustrated that they wouldn't comply, and escalated things much too quickly and far.

I'm just glad he didn't shoot anybody.  Seemed like the stress was getting to him, glad it didn't go worse than it did.

It brings up an interesting question. If you witness a police officer abusing someone who is innocent, what do you? I'm sure those kids were reacting like they would have reacted to anyone manhandling their friend, throwing them to the ground and pushing their face down. And then they remembered that dude was a cop with a gun. And good for them for remembering. 1 or 2 feet closer and one of them might have been going home in a body bag.

But what are you supposed to do? Stand there and let the police violate people's civil rights? I guess if you value your life, you do. But "trusting the system" when the system is extra-judicially wailing on a friend or family member must be supremely difficult.

Also underreported, the "fight" that got the police called was between a resident telling those kids to "Go back to Section 8 Housing" and the kids telling them to fuck off. At that point, the cops were called. Although them overwhelming the guard at the security gate probably would have accomplished that anyways.

Reminds me of something I remember hearing over on /r/ProtectAndServe about a cop who was sent out in response to a call about "One man assaulting another," and he got there in time to see the culprits... a pair of preteen boys, one black and one white, play-boxing with boxing gloves.

Forget WWB, sooner or later something will happen where Living While Black is cast as a crime.  ::)

I mean, they couldn't have been much closer.  They were in reach of the him and shouting constantly.  To be generous, it was a case of mob mentality making people stupid.  Pulling the gun was actually one of the more justified things that cop did, because he was definitely physically threatened and they were refusing to back off.

Though again, it happened because he failed to manage the situation, and striking the girl was unnecessary and only made the situation worse.

There are cases where it is necessary to rise up against tyranny...  They were just being angry and ineffectual.  Which is, like, exactly what I would have done in that situation.  Tensions were high as hell because the cop was terrible at his job.  His emotions were out of control, and he was basically responsible for the escalation.

Also underreported, the "fight" that got the police called was between a resident telling those kids to "Go back to Section 8 Housing" and the kids telling them to fuck off. At that point, the cops were called. Although them overwhelming the guard at the security gate probably would have accomplished that anyways.

They were trespassing though, right?  I don't like gated communities either, but I don't expect to be able to tell of the residents and use their amenities without consequences.  Particularly with such a large group.  Heck, technically I've been escorted off a property for something similar.  Though... I was with someone with dark skin on that occasion.  Hrm.

Ok, I'm not sure... but wasn't it a birthday pool party that these guests were actually invited to?  And it was just some asshole neighbor that didn't like those guests being there?

I don't think whether it was ever made clear whether anyone at the party lived in the community.

It was a birthday party at least.  I really don't know if they were trespassing or not, or if any of them were residents.  Or how that even works.
