So that would mean I suppose, that the necromancer survives, is no longer trapped within, and has a modest force of undead at his command."

Nothing happens for you.  The board apparently wants a more concrete goal as to what exactly you want them to achieve.  It doesn't have to be what they set out to do.

A tiny carved ebony piece appears in the playing field in front of Varian, ready for him to place.  It looks like a tiny dwarf....

If they wish to recover the treasures from the depths, so be it, but instead of gorging themselves wastefully on the delicacies they should use them in trade with that town to establish contacts with civilization. It should be a fine first step. Is that appropriate board?"

"I would like to see the humans establish the beginnings of a permanent colony in the ruined fortress, which means getting some to settle on at least the upper floors, establishing some means though which they might provide for themselves, or produce trade goods to send elsewhere, and protecting them until all pawns and factions overtly hostile to their colony are dealt with."

So question I should have asked 10 pages ago: Can the controlling pawn use artifacts (healing potions or +defense artifacts) in the defense of their faction in addition to lending their stats to it's defense?



The Magmanarian gently picked up his nondescript pawn and it examined it

"Ah. The Artist. Had I known of it before perhaps my life would have taken a different course. This Magmanarian is in many ways like me, if perhaps less so. Whatever factors of birth or nurture brought out my intelligence and curiosity have repeated themselves in this one. It was discontented with life, and felt there had to be more, as others played in the flows it would take lava and as it cooled sculpt it into magnificent shapes and fanciful shapes of what it thought the outside world must be. Although eventually another Magmanarian would almost inevitably break or eat it's sculptures... Wishing to leave it's home, but not having the courage of conviction that lead to me striking off on it's own, it eventually convinced the rest of the Magmanarians that a rumor they had heard from that rare passing trader, of a great hoard of tasty treasures, was real, and ripe for the taking. And now the Artist traveled with the tribe, seeing the outside world for the first time, and loving it. The artist now wishes that it could stay, if it could only find some way to convince it's kin of the worth of the outside world."

Yeah, that's a rule change for this board.  Pawns will be able to lend defensive stats to attacks on their controlled faction directly, including consuming healing potions, although any defensive artefacts must belong to the Pawn, not the Faction.  So yeah, if a Faction is controlled, much harder to kill.

Since this is somewhat rare in dwarves he was given the finest education, whatever he needed to progress in his craft. The fell mood took him on the cusp of the disaster. As other dwarves panicked fled and burned to death in the volcanic eruption that destroyed their precious fortress, Ustuth was gathering materials and bringing them back to his workshop.

The madness of dwarfkind never left Ustuth. And while his project is completed, he labors still in the depths. Undead workers tend the crops and maintain the fortress deeps where Ustuth lives. One day he shall be free."


Varian dramatically placed the token in the depths of the ruins of Stormrivet, marvelling as his hand passed through seemingly solid material.

The ebony piece seems to gain features as you place it down.  It becomes more and more lifelike until it fills with colour and you can see quite clearly a young-looking dwarf in poorly-mended robes roughly stitching something together on a table.  He steps away from it and snaps his fingers, and the dwarf zombie drags itself up and shuffles off in the direction of the mushroom farm...

A carnelian pawn rises from your playing field, along with a scroll...

Ramespi VII works briefly on shaping and fleshing out her pawn.

"Horus then was born into oppression in the Sand River Valley, the ancient and occupied homeland of his people. His childhood was tough, but his parents scraped together enough money to get him an apprenticeship with a forigen smith... who promptly took his young assistant to the outpost near Stormrivit.

It is here that young Horus learned his trade, and also how to deal with merchants and craftsmen of all races and cultures. After many years, Horus had managed to start a family, outlive his master, inherit said master's business, earn a reputation as a decent smith, and even earn the respect of the local dwarves. When the fortress fell, Young Horus saw it as an opprotunity to seek his fortune as a leader, and establish a colony."

Surprised at first, Kwong Xing chided himself. Not all dwarves chose the most obvious routw to dealing with his rivals. Clearly this one chose the more subtle path. He grew up in the depths of Stormrivet, before becoming the appointed mayor. Dwarvern nobility being as cut-throat as ever, he managed to survive a number of attempted assassinations, and the collapse of the fortress. Now, he returns with his kin to claim back the fortune of Stormrivet.

Xing places the miniature on the board, in the dwarvern encampment.

With all sides present and accounted for, new information fills your mind.  On each of your playing fields a bundle of swords, a muscled human, a sheaf of wheat and a chest of gold appears in miniature.  They then transform (respectively) into red, blue, green and yellow stones, smooth and rounded.  They then disappear.  It seems that you will be given and need to keep track of these tokens, representative of the resources available at your side's disposal.

The board will apparently allow you to trade these tokens like artefacts, and unlike artefacts they will survive the death of a Pawn (provided you have another to play with).  You may exchange these tokens between each other freely, and at whatever exchange rate you feel is appropriate.  The board will not enforce transactions.

You also receive a more detailed, instinctual understanding of how Stormrivet works, and that the board has given it certain special rules.

The precise victory conditions for each of your sides appears on scrolls provided to each player as well.  Passive conditions are checked when active conditions are filled.  Some "passive" conditions may require a lot of activity.

Unlike on the previous board, the game's factions are openly visible at the start of the game and each Pawn starts bound to its native faction.  There may be other factions unseen that can be found in drawn cards.  You place down your pawns and watch as the board comes to life...



In a sleepy trading post at the edge of a forest and before a ruined fortress, an ambitious young human has plans for glory.  Horus has, at least for now, the ear of his fellow villagers, and his sights are set upon the fortress.

Breaking camp and heading up the mountain, a party of dwarves prepare for heavy mining and furious battle in the name of the former Mayor of Stormrivet, a guileful dwarf who has lured these brave souls in search of the vast wealth of Stormrivet and keen to restore the fortress in his own image.

Silent and unseen, a band of elven archers watch from the treeline, well aware of the damage to the forest caused when Stormrivet was active.  With their new ally in hand, they seek to keep the fortress silent and its greedy forges dark.

As the dwarves climb the mountain on one side, a handful of meandering magmanarians follow the promises of their artist-companion, seeking tasty gemstones for their bellies as their leader has hopes of seeing Stormrivet's legendary engravings and perhaps of helping his companions come to appreciate art themselves.

And finally, beneath the mountain in sealed workshops and mines lies an unexpected hive of activity as dozens of mute dwarven corpses labour for the glory of their master, Ustuth Menglek, who bides his time and builds his army for when freedom comes.
