I always viewed Tau as better, but far weaker numerically. They can hold off many times their number, but the imperium could swarm them if they wanted. Currently they don't because A) it would cost too much in a time where the imperium is beset from all sides, and B) the Tau are not that big of a problem at the moment.

Top of my head- Harakoni are just Elysian stormtrooper equivalent, and Drookian Fenguard are scout infantry who don't use claymores - You're thinking o' the storm wardens.

That being said, I think Tau from Vior'la are still inadequate in close-combat compared to imperial guard. -> Because Of The Tabletop Rules. <-

Well, here's the thing, the average tau fire warrior IS superior to the average guardsman, if mostly by equipment. Not that melee really matters.

Honestly only the rough rider regiments would actually be decent on a charge, the rest of the IG is still shit at melee. And again, that's just a matter of equipment. The big problem with melee guardsmen is that anything that wants to get into melee with you WILL be better than you close-up, or have larger numbers. Or both in case of Orks.

Drookians are SCOTLAND IN SPACE, they do use CLAYMORES IN SPACE, though mostly as specialist weapons, it's the Finreht Highlanders who actually would charge at you with a BFS, because their world is at best Feudal. They raise regiments from villages that didin't paid the tithe.
The relationship between Harakoni and Elysians in my mind is pretty simple - Elysians are lighter, French-styled paratroopers. Harakoni are heavier armed and armoured American paras.
Half of it is random bullshit, but it has some sense of insane troll logic (>Maccabian Jannisaries good at melee because they can headbutt people because they have metal masks) in it. Saying that Tau are good at melee is bigger bullshit though.

And this is perfectly good answer. It's Warhammer 40k, everything is canon but can also be not true. If you choose to belive Tau Propaganda and think that they're good  at melee, feel free, but I choose to belive in Imperial Propaganda, that has some basis in rules, which says that Tau suck in melee.

And again, tau sucking in melee matters little given that that you aren't getting into melee with them (And the tricky tactic of bubblewrap drones.)

Either way, they're fine sucking in melee. Wasting resources on those new, f-off huge battlesuits is another matter.

Yes, the loss of Ballistic skill is a pretty heavy tradeoff for such a questionable gain, without power weapon options for squad leaders they still end up being barely acceptable at holding the line.

Eh, I ain't good at crunch since I don't have billions to actually play tabletop (or anyone to play with), but off the top of my head - all Death Korpsmen have +1 WS, not to mention various other bonuses like immunity to fear, and I think there is bunch of Elysians with like +1 WS/I, but honestly rules are not really a good portrayal of how actual combat in Wh40k would look like, just look at the artillery ranges and so on.
