So sad about all your buddies that got slaughtered by the Tau on the way to melee range.

I'd like to point out that A.) Lasguns (can) far exceed the Pulse Rifle's rate of fire (and are accurate at long range), though in exchange, the Pulse Rifle does much more damage. B.) Humans are bigger than Fire Warriors, and apparently have better reflexes--at least as far as seeing, recognizing, and focusing on objects at range. C.) The Tau are, on the whole, much shorter lived than humans. Combined with Humanity's life-prolonging technologies, this means that for all the Tau's advanced weaponry and tactical understanding, they can never accrue the kind of experience veteran human commanders can and often do. and D.) As previously stated the Tau DO, ON THE WHOLE, provide better equipment and training to their line infantry.

This is a comparison SOLELY of Fire Warrior line infantry vs Imperial Guard line infantry. Stormtroopers and elements from such regiments as the Tanith First and Only... Well, let's just say that if you're a Tau, you're gonna have a bad time.

In short, both Tau and Imperial line infantry rate about the same, though they operate wildly differently.

Some guard are just better than others :)

For Tanth!

Line to line, Tau would win in ranged combat, lose in melee. Those pulse rifles give them better performance against harder (heavy infantry) targets, always nice to have.

They got the golden roll : to born as sacred human form, to become his hammer, to venerate his name on the frontlines and finally to pay the eternal debt. There is no need to worry for them, as they are the lucky ones.

It's true. Even green Fire Warriors would absolutely backhand PDF forces or raw Guard from backwater planets.

I don't know about that, it's really very situational. Urban combat is a toss up, methinks.

Pulse carbines would make a mockery of guardsmen up close (Pinning is a bastard) up close, and the large array of skimmers and drones the tau have around given them a lot more mobility.

I'm sure the pitchforks of these feudal world peasants will be a worthy match against Tau fire warriors.

Wouldn't a stiff breeze backhand PDF or raw backwater guard, too, though? Not saying anything about the tau, just that those two things are may be not the best of benchmarks. Pretty sure their value in the setting is less than a small toilet paper factory :P

Indeed. I don't really know too much about their commonality though? Drones are a big plus, but the Imperium boasts several similar devices--at least, the Adeptus Mechanicus does.

Of course, brothah. For the Emprah.

Yep. But there's no real in-between. The Imperium tosses new regiments into the thick of it and plucks out the scarred and broken survivors. So... y'know, the majority of the actual Guard is legit man. Also they all have waaay more battle experience than Tau. Normal guardsmen have probably seen a lot more bloodshed than their Tau equivalents.

My opinion is more that, without other considerations, Tau LINE INFANTRY and Guard LINE INFANTRY, are about the same. Different tactics, different strategies, probably similar deaths on each side.

The Tau pretty much outclass the Imperium in Armor. Even if the Imperium has bigger, deadlier tanks.

Sure the Tau might outclass the Guard on individual tanks, but seeing the fact there's probably ten Lemon Russes for each ?Hammerhead?, the Tau are probably a little screwed, also artillery lots and lots of artillery make the battle field a little more pro-guard.

More like ten thousand.

Artillery needs to hit, and the hammerhead is a more mobile and deadlier tank in armament, in regards to both range and stopping power.
