Seems like most of our Mabi guild is moving here.

I'll be playing range CAST because that's what I use in the PSP games.

Hahah, yeah, I'm honestly just considering calling the team Fjallheim and being done with it. And to answer your other question, I downloaded the game iwth PSO2 tweaker while our internet was cuttin out fine. It'd just download a bit, stop for a bit, download more, stop, etc. It's not as fast as it could be but with 20 GB to download you've gotta take what you can get.

Also, stay tuned for a thing! It's just another guide, don't get too excited. Also also I'll be making the team tomorrow, so let me know your IGNs so I can hunt you down! I dunno what the cap for them is, if it's low we can set up sub teams or something.

So! It's time to discuss two things. Events, and Emergency quests. Events first...

Events is a name I've given random, well, event sorta things that pop up. These range from any number of things, to "kill this giant thing" to "kill a bunch of these little things" to the more exotic "disable these time bombs" or "dodge these bizzare alien things/lighting strikes", and even "find some keys for this door while things attack you". They add quite a bit of replayability to the missions and I quite like them. To boot they give you a meseta/exp bounty along with maybe a grinder/photon drop/synth on completion. They're good to do! Generally not super hard either, but do note that there is no penalty for just ignoring them and moving on. So if you're overwhelmed, don't be afraid to run off. They're mostly random, although there's a pattern to some (for instance, in the mission capture the nab rappies I seem to find a rockbear fight event fairly consistantly). Generally the most difficult ones are the ones where you have to fight a boss suddenly. If you remember how terrified and fucked up you got when you first fought a hildebear in PSO1, it's kinda like that. You'll die, you'll ricochet off walls, you'll feel like a little babby. But you will prevail, ultimately!

Boss fight events also have an added benefit, any weapons dropped by the boss will have an additional (boss name) soul add on on it. These add a decent chunk of stats, of varying usefulness depending on your class. Some are amazing, some are +10 HP +10 S-def.

Emergency quests! When an emergency quest happens there'll be a ship wide announcement over a PA system about some THING that's going down. Sometimes you'll have to defend a mining base, sometimes it's a large scale operation on a planet, sometimes it's dark falz trying to fuck up the ship in some manner. Most of these are excellent exp, dark falz especially, and some of them offer rare item drops exclusively from those missions. They are good to do, and they're all multi party missions, meaning they can have up to 12 people in them, like in multi party field areas, rather then the usual four. You can usually get carried through these missions, sometimes you crap out and don't get enough to fill the mission. You'll usually want to go to a semi full channel, the fuller the better, immediately upon the mission announcement going up, and rushing into the mission. From there just jump in, maybe get some 'mates, no time to waste, you'll probably get carried by some titan anyway. The later you are the less likely your team will be full and, well, good.

These are by no means mandatory, but they do provide pretty huge exp boosts and are nice to do if you're in the mood. Falz fights provide tokens to trade in for other stuff, usually just nice to have stuff like exp boosters and such. I think there are some rare weapons in there too.

So yeah! Those are events/emergency quests, do them when you see them, get prizes.

I'm in, so if anyone wants to give benefit codes, I'm Girlinhat or Laur - I'm not sure if it wants an account name or a character name, on Ship 2.

I played a bit, I really like the Force class, as an idea, especially since they can heal for free, but in practice the Ranger proves a lot more useful for solo play.  I'll probably try to specialize Force more, because the higher end magic is pretty bossin' and the healing is super helpful.  I just need to figure out how to do the zoom thing, so I can cast spells accurately while running...

It needs the player ID, which I'm unsure of how you get it, I'm pretty sure.

I know at the very least that for force Talis is greatly preferred to the point that it's almost the only thing you'll use. Similarly they're the only class that'll even bother with elemental weaknesses, as they're a pretty minor thing. And even then it's more because switching elements is a breeze for a force, rather then the fact that they need it or anything.

I'm not really well versed on forces, really, I'm fairly sure they get high brute damage later on, moreso then ranger. Maybe slower? Probably better AoE.

Gunner isn't really a "long range" class, persay, so it's not a competition. I do know the preferred subclass for minmaxy forces is techer for obvious reasons. I need to explain subclasses more in depth at some point, but the short version is you get some of the stats from the subclass, and it levels up seperately. You can also put points into a subclass tree, not sure if it independently gets points. I think it does, maybe at a reduced rate. It does NOT allow you to use weapons from that class, but it does give you stats so you are better suited to using the available to all class/crafted weapons that are relevant to that class.

So...something I was wondering, in regard to ranged weapons.

Is there any reason to use the rifles that fire in three-round burst over the rocket launcher-y things? The former hits faster, but the latter does rather dramatically more damage per shot. Also, the rate of fire disparity isn't enough that the launchers are hugely slower, if you're just spamming at something, so they seem to just generally be a better option in most cases, especially since they have a fairly wide AoE.

You can play Ranger if that is what you want. once you hit lv20 you will be offered a request to complete which will unlock subclasses. My ranger has force as subclass, I have Shifta(attack buff) and Resta(AOE Heal) on my skillbar and amazingly enough with a subclass setup they can be casted without a force weapon.

So...something I was wondering, in regard to ranged weapons.

Edit: Is there a way to stop the launcher from forcing file checks? It just decided to do a check which takes ages and overwrites all those english patch files I have to replace again.

The Rifle has some useful photon arts(skills). For example, on a large boss, the piercing shot can deal a lot of damage. The rifle can also be enhanced with special bullets to improve your shots and remains fairly mobile while the launcher locks you in place while firing. I used to hate the launcher because it felt slow and clunky, but now that I can ride the launcher to ram/dive into stuff and punch things with explosions it's loads of fun but still somewhat clunky.

The launchers are much quicker at mowing down masses of mobs, but rifles are (imho) a lot better for taking down bosses due to one thing - Weak bullet. It's a rifle-specific ranger class ability that "makes" a weakspot on the enemy at the location you hit, and this stacks with the innate weakspot multiplier of the location. This means you can like x10 your DPS if you land your weak bullet on the weakspot of the boss and focus fire at that point. And it works for everyone hitting the enemy, multplying the DPS of your entire team. I personally think that it's the single most important ability in the entire ranger class tree.

Does anyone know if there's a way to stop the launcher from forcing file checks? It randomly decided to do one when i launched it a few minutes ago and it is taking ages checking all the files and then redownloading the ~2Gb of english patch files I will have to replace again.

Edit: The patching of the files back to japanese was taking so long that I decided to just reinstall the game and then get the leftover minor patch.

Edit2: Inspired by a program which didn't seem to work, I decided to separate the japanese and english files and swap them in manually before launching the game so it wont freak out about the english files.

Edit3: Aaaand because I like efficiency, I created batch files to automate switching between japanese and english files... all 4000+ of them. If anyone else is interested in the batch files, let me know.

Yeesh. I don't know if I got a bad patch or what, but there is a lot of untranslated text in the tutorial segments :/
The quest counter tutorial, for instance. The entire thing is in moonspeak, and there's all these icons that I don't know the meaning of, and it goes on for 7 pages, and .___.

Found the player ID for the friend invite thing. There's the friend invitation system to get your ID in the menu before the character selection.

My ID is 12734418 in ship 2.

All the text in those tutorial popups is selectable, Ctrl+a > Ctrl+c that stuff and dump it into google translate. Everything NPC's say and every one of those message packs during missions end up in teh chat, which can once again be selected and copied, although it's a bit clunkier with the chat.

Also, that maintenance/patch broke the english patch and you will get a black screen after the opening cinematics unless you update the english patch to today's new version.

My Ranger's character name is Yggie. Feel free to throw me a friend request.

Yeah, after every patch update the english patch. The patcher overwrites files to, well, patch the game, so every time there's a patch if one of those files gets overwritten for whatever reason it gets reverted to japanese.

I'm unsure if you can stop it from doing the file check but if anyone knows then that'd be delightful.

Annnnd another point in the rifle's favor is that they sound more mobile, which will rapidly become a very big deal in boss fight, especially given rangers can't block.

But in general almost every class will use all of their weapons. They've done a good job of differentiating them all from each other.
