According to wiki, soak value for pilgrim's hovel is 40.

Sadly, wiki is pretty scarce on some topics, including this one. It seem though you need minimum equal phlegm to building's soak value to even start destroying. That's the best I can make out of it, sorry.

Anyways, when destroying, it's always better to use AT LEAST wooden shovel. Metal is even better.

Getting to 40 shouldn't take too long if you eat right. Namely, you should have a wide variety of food so you can get ~24h fullness without having to use any food at a huge penalty (<50%). It's better to do it like this than one humor point at a time because each point gained in the same session gives a small reduction in the debuff duration.

Wait, so there are two salem wikis?
I've been using this one:  http://www.salem-wiki.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=Pilgrim%27s_Hovel

Doing ok with humours so far (all stats around 25) and I'm sort of getting how the system works, but I still need a couple more skills for more variety.

Yeah, that's the tribal wiki, and salemwiki.info is the original one. The difference is that the one you're using has a bunch of propaganda in it.

Has anyone been playing this since the change of ownership?

I spent some time browsing the forums and it seems like the game is advancing at a substantial clip now that Seatribe isn't in command any more.

Wait, the devs aren't running Salem anymore? When did that happen?

Ah, I keep reminding myself to post some update but I keep forgetting...

So anyways - Salem keeps getting updated and imho it's GREAT. Since my last update-related post back in August, many things have changed, I'll point out just the few I can immediately remember:

So yeah, that's just few things to mention but there's a lot more. We can now get infected AND cure ourselves of various disease, there's a lot of new items, inspirationals, food, structures to make and stuff to pick, new skills etc etc. Purity system also got overhauled, I think, but I never payed much attention to it in the first place so can't say much about it. Personally, I think Salem is moving in great direction and at steady pace to boot. I'm still playing, usually few days in a row followed by a short-to-middle pause but generally, I'm having fun. I'm even checking official forums, albeit only occasionally, but the drama that happens there is pretty fun. Speaking of, apparently the Tribe, one of the biggest organized groups in Salem got disbanded amidst of forum/in-Salem drama. The exact extent of just how true their "we are moving away from Salem, looking for some fresh mmo" official message is wasn't quite clear last time I checked because there were several Tribe members that continued to play Salem after that, but officially Tribe is no more, for better or worse. The dramas keep happening though so all is fine, hehe. Not to mention one of the new devs is actively participating in them. But truth be told, Salem is one of the games if not the ONLY one where I actually don't mind the dev trolling back it's playerbase. The world of Salem is rough, but not unfair, after all, and said trolling remains within these constraints.

So to cap on all this, here's TL;DR:
Wow...glad I never got invested in it if they just dumped it off and jumped ship
It's exactly the opposite. The old devs left, but the new ones brought more life to Salem in few months than the old one did in year(s). Currently, it's GREAT time to get invested, so come on and jump in! :)

You forget the best change - inventory is now limited by weight rather than slots, which in practice means you can carry a lot more stuff (provided you raise your humors) and waste less time walking back and forth to deposit stuff at home. It totally changes the pace of the game.

Also, raising humors at low levels is orders of magnitude easier now, but much harder at higher levels, so the game feels less grindy.

Anyway, I was going to wait to revive this thread because the next item on the development roadmap is tutorials, but since it's already up I'll just say that if you can't get into the game because it's too convoluted just wait for the next patch and try again.

Duh, figures. OF COURSE I forgot weight/inventory changes, the one that seems small at first but is really important.

Thanks for that, DJ.  :)

Alright. I liked HnH back in the day, but it got WAY too grindy for me. Maybe I'll give this one a look. Do we have a settlement going?

I play as hermit and I'm getting by just fine myself. In fact, it seems to me specializing in just one branch (say, mining/metalsmithing) isn't even a viable option UNLESS you have a dedicated, active group of at least 2 or 3 more people where each of you specializes in something general like food, hunting etc. But as it stands now, gaining skills is just SO MUCH EASIER than it used to be. One of key features responsible for that is using the same inspirationals no longer artificially increases proficiencies, so upgrading those is no longer a tedious game of find-as-many-different-inspirationals-as-possible-and-not-get-bored-in-the-process. Coupled with other various new addition under the new developers, whole game just feels a lot less grindy and more just plain fun.

As for settlement - we had one going, but it sadly died off (my own inactivity at least partially contributing to it  :(). I'm not aware of any others, sorry. But as said, playing solo is totally possible, if that's your thing.

Sinistar i remember that in HnH a major drawback was the fact that you couldn't possibly do all the things that you wanted to do so they kinda forced you to pick an area and stick with it (proper agriculture would take up all your time).
The same applies here?

As someone that's been keeping tabs on it, yeah, the new devs have been knocking it out of the park in pretty much every way.

As for causticness, I don't think there's any in game moderation, so the chances of people being raging horrors is still very high. I don't really see it going away, unfortunately.

And a nomadic playstyle isn't really possible in salem (if you want to get anywhere, anyway) either, nope.
