Salem MMO - actually fun now
« on: March 02, 2014, 06:19:17 am »

The old thread is long dead, and it's not really representative of the current state of things, so here's a new one.

Some of you may remember Salem from before, as the grindiest game ever. However, there's been a big update and a world reset of February 21st, and things have changed substantially. There are limits on just how much you can grind them in a given day now, which at a glance may sound bad but it's not something that you'll really feel as a casual player - and hardcore ones can't leave you in the dust stat-wise quite as easily. It also seems that the gain rate drops off sharply at higher stats, and that there are some rather hard limits on character power, but only time will tell if that's the case. The limits on stat grind don't mean you'll be stuck with nothing to do, though - there's been a ton of new content since the previous thread. Also, the game is no longer about spamming the same thing over and over again, whether it's cabbage cakes or spinning tops, as that just doesn't work at all. Now it's all about diversity of food and inspirationals, which makes for a much less tedious grind.

Anyway, if you haven't heard about Salem before, it's an MMO by Seatribe, the same guys that made Haven and Hearth. It's a game where you start off with nothing but the clothes on your back and work (with friends, preferably) towards building an advanced frontier town (the game is set in colonial America). This involves working your way up many production chains, such as farming, metal working and carpentry. It's all fun and games, that is until somebody kills you. Salem does have permadeath, but the only thing that can kill you is the other players. So yeah, it's not a game for the faint of heart. Though you will likely live for quite a bit even without taking any safety precautions, so you can experience the early game, so even if a death makes you quit a couple of weeks after start you'll still have had fun.

And finally, the bad. The griefers are still there in force. In theory the grind limitations make the playing field more even, and they could be kept in check if their targets organized against them (there's still a lot more peaceful players than griefers), but we all know that's not how people work. However, the map has been made a lot bigger than before, so getting found by the griefers in the first place can take months. How big you ask? 50x50 km ATM, and it looks like it's getting expanded. To illustrate, I walked ~2h more or less in one direction (impassable terrain got in the way here and there), and I crossed ~10% of on one of the sides of the map. And currently there's 200-300 players on the server at any time, which on a map this big means you can have a lot of space just for yourself. Do note however that the wilderness spawns put you fairly close to the starting town, so you'll need to make an epic journey to the west first.

Also, speaking of the bad, a proper alchemy system still isn't here yet. There's just natural purity spot, which never go above 10% pure, and you can use them to get your crops etc. to like 6-7% pure, but that's it. I reckon alchemy is the next big thing the devs will work on, though, and the game is still quite fun even without it.

So, if you want to try this, go here.

Lots of thread views, I see, but no replies. I'm really bad at pitching games I guess, so I'd appreciate it if somebody who tries it would post a description of their experience.

I am considering it. Lately I have far more games than I can find time to play, so another MMO doesn't sound very wise. But I'll file it away for future consideration. It definitely looked interesting when it first came out, but I didn't like the idea of grinding and griefers. I'm sad to hear there's still permadeath. If there wasn't, I'd be far more motivated to try it out.

Looking into it. Does it have the same production time as the stuff in H&H? That's the big reason I didn't get into H&H, because I'd be wow'd by the novelty of it for a few hours and then completely lose interest like I did in Wurm.

Same sentiment here; I wanted to like it, and now I actually might.

The thing that kind of turned me away from Salem and Haven & Hearth wasn't even entirely the silly PvP griefing issue; it was how disjointed and confusing the design choices became.

What I mean by this is how I could realistically figure out how to build more things by staring at some pinecones ala the curio system. I might be alone on this but I prefer my open ended sandbox games to be playable without access to a wiki or a saintly level of patience through trial and error. The recipes and skill trees should be straight forward and actually make sense and there's where Salem's devs and my preferences seem to differ.

What is this curio system of which you speak? I quit H&H back before the first wipe. Griefing was rampant and so the developers implemented building destruction to stop us from making impenetrable vaults out of kilns and carts? Because it wasn't fair to the griefers, I guess?

Never tried Salem, didn't figure there was really any point. Grind plus permadeath has always seemed like a terrible combination.

I would play, but every time Bay12 plays Haven, it always ends in us exploding into a million groups. I suspect this will be no different.

I tried Salem early on and was really disappointed...
The game mechanisms just didn't make sense to me, with all the biles and phlegm or whatever, I understood how it worked but I couldn't relate, it was too abstract. Stuff took forever to do and didn't feel rewarding. Having to craft a bunch of toys and useless crap to "learn" completely unrelated stuff... it was not immersive at all.

Besides, I almost never met anyone (since the map is so big and people don't want to be found by griefers), and on the rare occasions where I met people, we just carefully avoided each other. -_-

When I started, everything had been picked clean for miles around the starter city, so it was also really annoying if I had to come back to the city, cuz it took forever to walk there.

I still did some stuff, played for a few days, then quit out of boredom.

I doubt that things have improved all that much despite the changes mentioned ... so I'll stay away from it.

It depends upon the old, olde understanding of how the body worked.  Long before modern science and when we barely had an understanding of anatomy.  Because people did not understand how the body worked, they instead labeled those things they could easily recognize, cause every person shared them.

Blood, Phlegm, Yellow and Black Biles.  Technically there are more, but those are the four that have to do with Salem.  During those times, people believed that a specific balance of those four bodily fluids were responsible for a persons health and well-being.  Its why techniques like leeching and bleeding became common practice.   It seems absurd to us, but that's about the right time period when people still believed such things.  Lol.

Anyway! I tried Salem not too long ago; and while I enjoyed it, for the most part... I kept getting killed by a snake who had set up in my camp. Which is very annoying.  Very very annoying.

So how different is Salem from HnH?  From EVERYTHING I heard, it played identically, down to the food-hording and 'staring at pinecones until you're a god of war'.

I honestly wouldn't have a problem with HnH if you didn't have to stare at pine cones all day to learn how to throw a punch while other people who have been staring at a pine cone for months could waltz in and kill everyone and you can't even throw a punch back. If there's another group formed however, I'm a sucker for those and might give it another try. The last group split up after misleading communication and rampant raiders.
