In the Compound of Recently Indeterminate Ownership
Will jumped towards the mage’s unconscious form as soon as he heard the word ghost. The bismuth bronze amulet was quickly fastened around his neck, after which he also pocketed the knife the mage had wielded to so little effect. Looking down at the comatose body, he decided to bandage the mage up as best he could. Strips were cut from the rival’s clothing and then tied tightly around the wounds. It served well to slow the bleeding, and the mage didn’t look so pale that Will feared for his life yet. It was likely the mage would survive, though his state of mind upon awakening was another matter entirely.
Kyle also took to looting, although he was much less panicked than was Will. He calmly took his time to search the bodies over. He grabbed the staff that had fallen without striking a blow, and moved on to the opponent who had once held a hammer when he discovered something extraordinary. There was a purse of 90 iron shillings sewn into the man’s clothing! That would easily make up for the week spent traveling to and from this compound. And inside that purse, besides the all-important coins, was a note.
The enclosed coins cover the cost of establishment for your group. Get some equipment as quietly as you can and set yourself up as mercenaries. Diminish the impact of that Varisport group. Or eliminate them.
[The note was signed by charring the image of a hammer into the paper]
Kyle folded the note back up as he noticed his companions preparing to leave, and went with them back to the inn, with Rachel following and none of the others objecting too fiercely.
Near the Compound
The
dreaming soul drifted briefly before finding a house with sleeping occupants. It quickly sapped a manatic charge from the eldest, a frail and grandmotherly woman.

The group arrived at the inn to find Innkeeper Meren looking more animated than usual. He walked quickly to the group, before they were even in the door, and began whispering to them.
”There’s a man in the corner. Says he’s from Ludan. I told him to bugger off, don’t like them Allosmith types. He said he’d only leave if he got to talk to you. Said something about their contract for you. I want him out of my inn, but I thought I’d warn you. He’s a big fellow, and not the jolly sort. There’s been a lot of tension. Two months since the War and no real progress towards solving any of the problems that started it. All I know is I don’t like them Ludan folk.”When the quick stream of words came to a close the innkeeper walked off, presumably not wanting to draw too much attention to his connection with the mercenaries. This allowed them to see the man of interest, who sat in the corner hulking over the table beneath him. It could have been a children’s toy compared to him…
The Contracts
The dragon turtle from before appears to have grown in size some, and is now almost certainly capable of breathing fire. That copper mine has gotten no less important, however, and the village is still willing to pay.
It appears a recent disease wiped out a number of goblins in the Greenskin Mountains. New goblins have always been known to fill the ranks in quickly, but this might be a chance to clear a cave or two. There are those in Ludan who are interested in defending a cave, possibly working on a way to traverse the treacherous mountains. If you clean the cave they’ll send soldiers, with Varisport’s approval, to hold the cave. They aren’t offering much of a reward though, just whatever is found within the cave.
Varisport is offering to substantially decrease the interest on your loan, as well as allowing you to open up larger loans to purchase equipment if you’ll spend a month at sea fighting corsairs. They promised to supply you with Sea Silver weaponry before the trip, which you could keep afterwards. It’s clear they’re looking to strengthen ties with you while simultaneously opening up a route outside of the valley that they could control.
There’s a shipment between Ludan and Varisport, and the Varisport authorities want someone they can trust, but present as neutral. They hope that Ludan will not recognize the connection, and so will not be suspicious. You’re the only people that fit the bill. That being said, they don’t care enough to pay you much.
