[Samarkand]

This is the IC thread for Roll for Hire. If you want to talk about lore, or anything else which is OOC, please do that here. IC discussions of any sort, including deciding what contract to take next, should happen here, along with all combat, dancing, etc.

The Inn

Inside a small dank inn, four men and a woman crowd around a table which has a decided slope to it. Each has a weapon laid across their lap, with the exception of Joe Bridger, who is holding a shield up to his chest as though at any moment one of those weapons might turn towards him. In front of them are four small slips of paper: their first contracts. Decisions must now be made regarding the nature of their mercenary enterprise. They can choose which contracts to pursue at the moment, how to divide up their motley crew if they choose to do so, and what to do about their debt.

The Contracts

A young dragon turtle is all that stands between a small village and its best hope for prosperity: a newly discovered copper mine. Clear out this beast and you’ll be sure to be rewarded well. Its shell is very hard, and its skin is much thicker than a man’s. And it’s probably not old enough to be the fire breathing sort yet…

What seems to be a large tunnel system has been discovered. It’s unknown what resources it might hold, and nobody seems willing to stick their necks out to search it. More likely than not it merely contains a ton of goblins. You have been told you can keep what you find, and you’ll be given a nominal reward if you survive.

Dire beavers have dammed up a river and it’s threatening to flood a part of the valley which holds a significant number of farmers. As farmers they can’t pay much, but they would love it if you could kill the beavers and break up their dams.

With Paludan being required to pay a sizable tribute to Ludan, the Herbalists Guild wants to expand its operations deeper into the swamp. They will compensate you for your time, and you are not expected to run into much that’s dangerous. The reward goes up the more landmarks you find for your map.

"I suggest the dragon job. Right now we need some quick cash and reputation."

"Then I take it you have an idea to get through that hide easily? And you're quite sure it won't set us aflame? Oh, and the shell is something as well."

"So it would seem that we've two votes for the marshland cartography, and two votes for the Dragon Turtle."
Cromwell sighed.
"Since I hate being the tiebreaker in these choices, we shall let Lady Luck decide!"
Cromwell pulls out a coin from his pocket (a wooden one, as he's broke) and flips it (Random.org time!)
"Heads, we go for the Dragon Turtle, as that was the one on top of the pile."

"Well, which direction is the swamp, and which direction is the mine that the turtle is blocking?
For that matter, in what directions are any of these?"

"It doesn't matter. It's work."

"Well, if it's in the same direction, we could get more done faster, unless logic fails to apply in this establishment."

Overhearing your conversation, and wanting you to succeed so you can pay him, the innkeeper comes over and says,
"The mine is actually only a couple hours walk north of here, into the foothills which stretch into the valley. The tunnels are also north of here, but much farther north, all the way to the base of the mountain. The river that's been dammed runs from where the Burning Sea and the mountains intersect, due east of here. The marsh is in that same region, north of the river and not quite as far east."

"I know it's tempting to tell one of the contracts you've accepted, and go and do another first, but I'd advise against it. Right now your reputation isn't very good. Quite frankly, you don't even really have a reputation. Save making people wait for you for when they'll be willing. That's my two cents at least."

"All right then, I say we head for the turtle, and go from there."
