In Paludan
Alice happily led Kyle inside what he had earlier identified as the mess hall. He had been anticipating the inside being similar to the barracks he had eaten in during the war, with long tables and benches, yet no elbow room. Instead he found circular tables, some of which were even a little ornate, with single seating benches that often resembled tree trunks growing out of the ground. Alice showed him a table to sit at, and he found himself looking down at carvings of fairies dancing around mushrooms. When Alice returned with the food he found that that too surpassed his army experience. They each had a leg from a wild hare, along with some sort of boiled and mashed root. The best part though was the seasoning. It was clear that not all of the herbs the alchemists traded in were merely medicinal. Both Alice and Kyle were engrossed in their food, devouring their rabbit before they seemed to recognize they were each entertaining company. Alice began the conversation, asking
"So how is it that you came to be a mercenary? Master Feran mentioned that you five were involved in the war, but surely not every soldier chose the life you did after the fighting was over."
A couple of yards from the Inn
Will tried to frighten off the thugs with the threat of death. They seemed to take this to mean that the only chance to survive would be to kill off the mercenaries, and desperate men fight the hardest. They began to come forward, and so Will had no recourse except to shoot the unarmed opponent in his thigh. The young man, barely more than a boy, stumbled forward, clearly crippled, and was met by
Clair's ax to his side. The combination of the two open wounds was clearly causing him to lose blood extremely quickly. Realizing the peril he was in, the unarmed opponent turned and hobbled away as best he could, managing to slip away between a few buildings, leaving the mercenaries unsure as to which he might have entered and hid in.
The other two mercenaries charged forward to meet the remaining opponents.
Joe brought his shield up and slammed in into the club man with the crunching sound of a few ribs giving way under the force of the impact. In response to this assault, the club which had seemed so weak before was suddenly hurtling towards Joe's head. He tried to bring either shield around to protect against the blow, but couldn't bring either up quickly enough. He felt a strong impact against his head, and a sound that he swore would be the shattering of the club, but he didn't see the weapon break. His vision went black for a moment, and when it returned it took him a second or two to identify where he was, and even then he only had the vaguest sense that the man holding the large length of wood was a foe. He found it hard to move himself in any coordinated way.
Cromwell went after the one with the knives, bringing his sword in an arc near the man's right side. The knife thrower managed to avoid the brunt of the slash, only suffering a gash along one arm.The man tried to whip his arm around to send a knife in Cromwell's direction, but the mercenary was simply to fast for his opponent.
