So, I just played about five hours of Titan Fall.  I like it. Guess I'll throw up a review since most of this is just first imrpessions.

So I wanted to try this out since it does sound interesting. Heck, it's free, and if I don't like it I just uninstall the damn thing. Thing is tho, Origin says I'm already registered with them.

But I never registered with them, ever, for anything.

O_O

Edit:
Ok, apparently I have, BattleForge, turns out it was an EA game that I registered to back when it was on Steam (I think it died on Steam too, can't remember much) and they somehow took that to mean that I want to register for Origin too or something (not sure if Origin even existed back then).

Woops.  Please ignore the incomplete post.  :P

So I just played five hours of Titan Fall. I like it. It's  a unique and bold step away from the typical triple A standard. Movement is extremely fluid and satisfying. There's always at least 10 ways to get from point A to point B, which means camping is almost never a thing. Titans are indeed powerful, but they're also big flashing targets that are easily avoided. I treat them like I treat Max units in Planetside 2. Dodge around them, take pot shots, work them down. Generally you should engage a titan when it's distracted by another titan. My personal strategy is to use an my own AI titan as a distraction as I take pot shots out of windows, rooftops, and around walls.

I haven't played this yet but the idea of weak bots that you can kill for faster titan falls seems like an interesting choice. It's strange that people are harping on them so much when it doesn't even phase them in single player games or in games designed around creeps like in DOTA. It's something new and intriguing for a first person shooter and for that I applaud them.

Sounds good on paper, but you'll have to play it to understand just how poorly thought out and badly implemented it is. Supposedly their purpose is to allow players to get mechs faster, but really, you get the damn things every two minutes regardless of what you do. You get maybe 1-2 seconds knocked off that cooldown for killing a bot, which is irrelevant in a game where you can just play some CCG nonsense that gives you a mech at the start (lol) or 40 seconds off. If you want to compare that to DotA, imagine that you got 10 free gold per second and minions gave 1, and you could play a consumable that gives you items from the beginning. The bot's AI and balance is so astonishingly bad that they serve no gameplay purpose whatsoever beyond that (insignificant) cooldown reduction, so it's apparent that they're just there to cover up just how devoid of players a 6 vs 6 match is on a large map. They could certainly change it from how it currently works in the demo, but that would be a radical rebalancing of it, and at its core the game is still just another CoD.

TotalBiscuit did a video on Titanfall here. Despite this being an EA game, he's made me interested.

Yup, I also agree with him, the gameplay could stand to last longer while perhaps being slower. Will definitely try it out this week.

Against my better judgement, I used a coupon and preordered/preloaded Titanfall. Anyone else prepared for some giant robot action on Tuesday?

I played about 3 hours ish.

It's pretty good.

There doesn't feel like there's a lot of stuff though. Most of the unlocks save a small handful aren't particularly interesting. All the guns are the same as any other modern shooter except for the smart pistol, which is pretty hilarious. Smart pistol isn't particularly overpowered either, as it takes quite awhile for it to actually be able to lock onto human players. Instagibs the bots though, which is useful. It will always lose to someone with a real gun. Other than that one thing, everything else is samey.

The titans are pretty fun. However, I've equipped my own titans to have nuke bombs and autoeject in them, so that's what I do with my own. Suicide bomber style. Works amazingly.

Some of the maps are pretty great, especially the close in urban ones. But the more open maps are really stupid. There's only like 6 players per team... so the open maps are incredibly boring and when you die, it takes forever to get anywhere. Not to mention you can't do any of the parkour fun on an open map.

I haven't figured out which of the titan loadouts are the best yet. I'm kinda liking the rocket launcher, but the autocannon served me very well before that. Rocket launcher has way more OOMPH though. Sometimes the autocannon feels like I'm just mildly decorating the enemy. I've also noticed a problem where regardless of what I use to alpha strike an enemy, I can ever only bring it down to about 1/3 hp. After which I get eaten alive. I might be doing something wrong, though it does play into my strategy of blowing myself up for massive points.

I've had ridiculously good success with leaving my titan on autopilot while I run around killing the enemy pilots trying to jump on it. It's kinda cute how it reports what its fighting and what's trying to kill it, so I know what to help it with.

I don't like how you're forced to complete the incredibly boring "campaign" mode twice to get the two remaining titan models. Speaking of which... there are only THREE titan models. Wtf is that?

I really don't like how tiny the teams are and how fast the games end. It's like... 7 - 10 minutes for a full match. That's literally the same amount of time it takes to pick and ban a team in Dota 2 Captain's Mode. It feels way too rushed. Honestly I would have preferred it if the Titans were harder to get and harder to kill. There's this really sweet spot about 3 minutes into the game when there's only 1 - 2 titans running around. It's perfect at that point. 3 minutes, there's like 6 titans on the field and it's just stupid. It just remains that way until the end of the game.

If they found some way to keep it so there's always only about 1 - 2 titans on the field, the game would have been perfect in my mind.

Lastly, the bots are absolutely worthless. I'm pretty sure they're only there just to pad your ego. Unlike creeps in Dota or LoL, they don't do anything. They have no purpose at all. They're not even a remote threat. They can't do anything worthwhile objectively. The game gives you the ability to hack the higher levelled ones but why on earth would you do that? There's no reason. They still die in two shots and they can't hit anything themselves.

----

All in all I think it's a very fluid and polished game. But it's very much like TF2 when it came out. There's so little stuff, but what's there is a great experience. It's a great game for people who love shooters like CoD and Battlefield. I think I might play this for one more day then try and get a refund.

The bots can spot you on the minmap and wouldn't take that long for an enemy player to find out, they also can capture flag points but yea they are pretty much cannon fodder but the point of the game is you are a supersoldier.

A 48 GB install is crapping insane, that would take weeks for me to download. Not to mention the poor souls who have limited hard drive space.

I believe the actual download is about 22gb. The 50gb is just the install size. The plus side is when it's downloaded, it's almost guaranteed to run smooth and great.

This game really is a lot of mindless fun. One highlight was when I was sitting on top of a nondescript building next to a turret hacking location. I'd just camp the spot with my autopistol.

This same two guys would keep running to try and hack it for some reason (there was no one else there) and I'd just shoot them from my nondescript location. Then they'd come back and try to identtify which of the three nondescript buildings I was sitting on, and die again to my autopistol slowly locking on to them. The fourth time it happened, I pretended to have gone somewhere else by cloaking myself. Then when one of them was satisfied, they ran onto the turret hacking spot and I landed my titan on them.

I... kind of feel like this might deserve a new thread now that the game is actually out, maybe one with a bunch of posts from people that have actually played it instead of those nay-saying it because of rumours and the fact that EA published it.
