Terribly sorry yobbo but im going to have to disagree with you completely. Gear doesnt make you useful, being useful and acting intelligently and with initiative makes you useful.

You know what equipment i had on my first mission? A solitary mk II suit. no weapons, no combat skills, just a shiny new mk II and the initiative to perform actions that benefited the team and the mission.

You know what i achieved? Lots.
I went and explored a bunch of places with my sub-team, i wrote a program for the supplied mapping drones that identified the more dangerous gravitational anomalies that would have instantly pancaked my teammates, i surgically replaced moruls goddamn eyeballs, i took a few samples, i attempted to assist in the autopsy of a giant alien beetle, i followed someones orders, i borrowed gilgamesh and used it to save a guy in a crashed shuttle from a zone of perpetual lightning arcs, i distrbuted anti-radiation meds when my team explored a radiactive death zone with god knows what in its center, i built a thermal radar array out of recycled spyware, i painted a baddass painting of a wizard riding a unicorn, i tried flying a mapping drone over an anomaly that it couldnt fly through and i recovered everything i possibly could in the hopes it would serve to be useful or valuable or just plain cool.

If you wanna get paid you dont need to own diddly squat, you just need to actively attempt to be of use.
Borrow a weapon, loot a body, inspect something that looks out of place, plug your suit into a data source so steve can access it, hell just pick up someones severed limbs or mangled corpse. If you make the effort piecewise will pay you and radio will make sure you get your share from the team fund.

Clearly running multiple missions at the same time is a terrible idea.  The epic battle to see which team can cock it up worse has escalated again.

And Larry kinda gets blueballed in all this; just left with a raging bone spear and no where to put it.

In addition, and I do believe I may have said this before, having better equipment also means your mistakes may prove far more costly.

Examples: Faith getting possessed due to a poor decision, cue mass destruction (compare to when Corsair's guy, whose name I forget, gets possessed without any particular trouble at all); Stacy using the HEP like a fool, cue cascade of doom; Flint's rainbow gun making a storm that sets fire to the city (though this last one hasn't really caused much trouble, strictly speaking, unless you happen to live in the city).

So when you're a newbie, you have freedom! Nothing to lose! The ability to make mistakes and not ruin everything with them! Your utility only suffers minimally in comparison, since that's based off a player's own intelligence and good fortune more than stats.

You're still very much screwed if you're facing a battlesuit and have nothing but a laser rifle, but if you're doing that then you probably made some bad decisions somewhere along the way anyhow.

Honestly if your facing a battlesuit with only a laser rifle your probably in a better position than your teammates.

Chances are hes gonna be targetting your more threatening teammates which means you can make a break for his cockpit release and try firing a shotgun pulse into his face.
If you fail chances are you would have died anyway, but if you succeed... you just got sole looting rights to a gosh darn battlesuit.

Yeah, and it's not like piecewise doesn't give you opportunities to gain equipment during missions. In the sharkmist mission, the mining suits and lasers were like Christmas gifts for newbies. The mining laser and exosuit basically gave me more than 10 tokens worth of equipment for a successful Dex and a successful Aux roll. (I'm still very surprised nobody looted the second mining exosuit even though I informed people of its existence several times.) Anyway, I'm certain that if the arctic mission had gone better (which piecewise had said was a more newbie-friendly mission) then there would had been a lot of free equipment for people in it. It's a cargo ship, it's bound to be filled with stuff, which as per Miyamoto's directives would most probably be given to newbies.

Med is nearly useless in any warfare mission, and the usefullness of Aux depends on my loadout and the particulars of the mission.
A-ahem. Fun fact: Maurice was made up nearly on the spot when my first character was to die because there was no fucking one dedicated medic in M4. And that was the very first true 'warfare' mission - well, was supposed to be.
I mean, I can't possibly learn more than Renen Averius Von Raptum/Lukas Stark, and *they* still go out on standards

Compare it now to how things went on with Milno's team on M13. While not everyone 'actively attempted to be of use' over the top, everyone did their small part of the job and they all got rewarded awesomely. All.

In the end, I must admit that handing out tokens just for being on the mission encourages 'sitting in the corner and doing nothing' just as much. The problem is, just as much as handing out too few of them to reward semi-active 'support' contributors (which should constitute the majority of teams, as opposed to a few spotlighted 'active' contributors). Would it do any good if there were five Bishops on M3? Or, as yobbo gave an example, would it do any good if all characters on the team were extremely loot- and reward-hungry? With all the bickering that would ensue?

Add: Also, one should mind that 'total' of tokens handed out doesn't mean much, unless the person distributing them is willing to do so very unequally. Average (or some other obscure statistical value) would be of much greater use. The growth of characterbase should correspond to the growth of total amassed wealth, otherwise the characters are driven to poverty and inability to cope with tasks and threats (which are mainly balanced against the better-equipped people). That said, so far Piecewise has been able to strike a fine balance between different threat levels, keeping both the veterans and newcomers occupied yet not exactly in hopeless situation (unless by design - like Mission 9B crystal monster).

Anyway,
I say you just wait until the mission ends and if there is a problem then, then we'll talk about it then.

While there is certainly an upward scale to the armory equipment  (one ten token item is likely to be better than two five token items, etc) I certainly dispute people fresh out the gate are simply screwed.  There's a lot of "newbie friendly" things going on (look how much stuff M14 got to use for free) and vets loaning out gear (Miya loaning his toys out for the boarding) to tip the scales back.  Plus, if you're going after someone in minimal armor, a gauss rifle round is still going to put a huge hole in their chest.

Lars, a character with +2 con, still uses a gauss rifle for his main weapon.

Yeah, accidental eldritch abominations aside, the basic microwave amp is fully capable of killing a battlesuit on a lucky roll.

I'm not gonna weight in on the token thing. I've been fairly lucky with how many tokens I've gotten so far and I'm just going to wait and see what m14 gives us. How much is getting destroyed by teammates all mission without even once doing damage worth, you reckon?

Given that you've been one of the few actually competent, yet unlucky people, I'd say you're good for at least standard fare. You didn't do much, but not through lack of trying or excess of stupidity, just bad luck and bad timing, and the few times you could get a shot in, you managed to be of good help.

Unless I'm mistaking you for someone else. Was Pancaek the one who restrained Despair the first time?

Yeah, with the hands behind her back trick. I'm just hoping new legs+head will fall under the after mission repair. Otherwise I'll have to get myself a skateboard or something to scoot around on until I get the cash.
