Yes, I get how axial tilt works. I do not require a Wikipedia article ಠ_ಠ
Well, sorry, you were the one questioning the point of tilted lighting. ;)

I am questioning the practical, in-game benefit. Other than pretty visuals, does it actually do anything?

The northern hemisphere has shorter days for the first few months since game start, if you really want to scrounge around for an ingame effect. Unless you enjoy fighting at night, the difference in length of day between winter and summer, and between northern and southern hemispheres, might prove to be quite significant.

Other than potentially causing you to fight a snakeman terror mission at night when it could have been day (or the other way around), no, it doesn't really have an ingame effect.

Name: Whizzy McGun
Preferences (weapons, stats, etc): bzzzztwhizzzzzzzzz (Subtitles: I require explosive-go-boom, human.)
Bio: ... Wait, did the scientists really just tie a gun to an RC helicopter? Wow, they must be bored back there. It's a neon-yellow RC helicopter with an array of weapons tied to it. God knows how they shoot, but it blasted the fingers off Scott when he tried to grab it.

So, when you start this back up, do I get all six clones again?

I guess since this may be getting a restart, I'll request a soldier to add to the list:

Name: Tom Walman
Preferance: Rifles. Not really picky, so anything will do, but when I play, my riflemen tend to live longer (by about 4 seconds)
Bio: The recruiter found me smoking weed behind a 7-11. He threatened to turn me in if I didn't sign the slip of paper.

Why not?

Name: Roman Howard
Preferences (weapons, stats, etc): Brilliant but lazy, seen-it-all type (high bravery, and accurate, TU maybe not so much), Likes big boom (Heavy weapons and anything equipable with HE ammo (and blaster launchers even, when researched)). Field medic (Medi-kit on hand (or in belt) at all times).
Bio: A resident Scientist/Medical Officer of the X-COM team; spent more time BS'ing with the soldiers and hitting on the medical staff, and while at it, being a bit of a stoner and a drunk for the better part of a day (at most hours, a combined stoned-drunk). He may not be professional by any means, but his results usually beg to differ (A bit of a bunny-ears lawyer kind). Having been fed up with his conduct enough (especially after the CO, along with half the staff got stoned by a "special" birthday cake Mr. Howard made for the crew in '98) he was sent to work with those he's more compatible with in order to be taught a lesson (out on the field with the very soldiers he BS's with). His response upon figuring out? "Challenge Accepted."

EDIT:
Of course, the "Special Birthday Surprise Incident" wasn't the only prank or "good idea" that came to mind. He was also a bit of an oddball and practical joker, with incidents ranging from: Tinkering with grenades (especially the training kinds to keep the troops on their game) so that they stay stuck to someone's hand, and light a concentrated blunt inside instead of a standard smoke grenade (or a ganja grenade) while at it, turning his office into a night club using thermal flares for lighting and strobe lights (causing a staff member to have a seizure by accident), manufacturing modified lubricants to make people slip all across the base and... personal use, and we can't forget when he rigged a puppet alien inside a test dummy for medical training, scaring the surgery room no longer sterile for the remainder of a night.
