"Divine Divinity" is an RPG with combat more like Diablo 2 than Baldur's Gate. You've got an open world to explore as well, though some areas might be off limits till certain parts of the plot.

"Divinity 2: Ego Draconis" is the sequal to "Divine Divinity" and is 3rd person action RPG with skill trees, open world (though kind of linear, large zones one after the other). Though the combat may be too simple.

Tactical RPGs you could look at the SSI Gold Box games. They're rather old, but they're turn based DnD played on a gridmap, so positioning is rather important as units get free attacks against others that move next to them.

Similar to "Eye of the Beholder" there's "Land's of Lore 1", "Dungeon Master", "Dungeon Hack". "Dungeon Hack" is interesting in that it's a randomly generated dungeon which you pre-define the frequency of certain elements (such as doors and keys, teleports, floors)before you start playing.

Maybe "Gothic 1 and 2". They're open world RPGs with a training skill system. Leveling up your sword skill for example lets you character use new swings and swing faster. As I said, open world though later areas have tougher monsters which you can't deal with early on.

"Ultima Underworld 1 and 2" are 1st person dungeon crawlers. Though enemies aren't as frequent as in, say, "Eye of the Beholder", and there's more quests involving just talking to people.

Byron here is a let's player who's covered a number of these more action type RPGs. Maybe have a look at some of the videos to get an idea, especially for the SSI ones (Champions of Krynn, Death Knights of Krynn, Dark Queen of Krynn).

hello, I'm looking for some kind of (100 hours+ if possible) J-RPG on PC (and preferrably on Steam) in which you don't have a party of characters but just one. Thanks

Dark Souls 1/2 are pretty nonlinear and definitely fit the challenging gameplay category.

I'm looking for a multiplayer co-op survival game, like Stranded II, or a good multiplayer horror game, preferably free (Something like Survivors or Slendytubbies).

Uncharted Waters: New Horizon.... If you can get your hands on it....

It is a game where you are a ship captain and can follow the story or do whatever you like.  Explore the world, priacy, trade, privateering and what-not.  Damn good game for its time.

Hello thread! I'm on the ever constant search for games to play, and my new fancy, after reading some of the 1444 thread is mud games. I'm asking you, people of bay 12, what kind of game would you suggest for someone who's pretty much never played a mud, my only experience being a little of zork(not mud, but text) and an attempt at a mud 2 years ago for 2 days.
Bonus, but not required:
-Crafting involved
-Non fantasy (these are in no order, but crafting trumps non fantasy)
-'newb' friendly
-one that's not too fast. meaning, I've heard tales form my dad's mud days of games where text was scrolling quite fast, and it was hard to catch things (like his group poisoning the water, heh)
double bonus:
-I'm able to host a private server version so i can play around and learn things/teach brothers possibly

The 1444 game looks neat, and i'm likely to try it soon anyway, open to other idea though!

Oh, and one other thing. pvp. i'm not sure how pvp works in most muds, but i worry about it..

The Disc world MUD is the best there is. Hands down the best. It's absolutely enormous and full of friendly people.

This is gonna be tricky... I'm looking for something with RPG elements that's non-linear and focuses on challenging gameplay over plot.

That isn't to say that it can't have plot; it's just that I've played too many games that are rated very highly, only to discover that the actual gameplay is boring and repetitive, and the reason they're so venerated is because of the plot. Plot's great and all, and I do appreciate it, but it's not what I play a game for.
Examples of games that I've had this issue with include Fallout, Planescape: Torment, Dragon Age: Origins, Amnesia: The Dark Descent (replace 'plot' with 'atmosphere'), and Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick.

Games that I really enjoy are ones where there's enough of a plot to get me engaged (I dislike ones that are overtly; 'This is a game - play it! Get the high score!'), but where from early on, I'm not thinking about why Loghain betrayed the King, or why some guys shot down the zeppelin I was on, or whatever; I'm thinking about whether I should memorise Cone of Cold or Fireball. I'm thinking about whether my guy should specialise in two-handed weapons or keep my options open in case I find a nifty shield.
Examples of games like this, which I've really enjoyed: Wizardry series*, Might and Magic series, Eye of the Beholder 1 + 2, Baldur's Gate II, Betrayal at Krondor, Ravenloft, System Shock 2, X-Com (the original, though the remake wasn't bad), Jagged Alliance 2, various roguelikes.

I realise some of those don't seem to go together so well, but they all have elements of improving your character or group and making choices in how you develop them, and those choices come into play as you explore the world/dungeon and engage in tactical combat.

I don't have a problem with plot itself - I got quite immersed in the plot of some of the above games, and I spent hours reading the lore scrolls/books in DA:O and Skyrim - I just get aggravated when masses of plot and dialogue is used to cover up the lack of an actual game underneath. Or one so easy it's designed to be impossible to lose.

*(except VI; huge maps and a complete lack of an automap pissed me off. VII was great though.)

Knights of the Chalice... Basically barebones DnD the game. Which sounds like exactly what you are looking for. Challenging encounters, and a surprisingly complex character customization system with only 3 focused classes await. http://www.heroicfantasygames.com/

I've got a tricky request. I'm a teacher. I teach English. As a foreign language. To elementary school kids. Some of them are beginners, and some are more advanced. I want to use games to help them learn more English, but more than half of them can't read more than a few words. And I can't recommend games with any kind of violence in them, for obvious reasons.

Ideally, I need to find as many games as possible without graphic violence (some cartoony stuff is probably okay, but no blood and no killing humans), which includes language which is not too difficult. Games with spoken narration are perfect, because the kids don't have to read. Written words are okay too, as long as they're not above about a 2nd grade reading level. The kids don't need to understand every word (the idea is they'll learn new words by playing), but they shouldn't be completely lost, either.

So far, I've got The I of It, Thomas Was Alone, Minecraft (all the kids play that already anyway), Neopets (hate it but it's good for kids), The Stanley Parable (for older kids mostly), Puzzle Bots (for kids who can read), Puzzler World (for kids who can read), and possibly Psychonauts for older kids.

I know there's got to be loads of point and click adventure games with good voiceovers, but it's tough to search for stuff specific to kids. Any kind of visual novel which is appropriate for children will be great, too, but again, it's tough to find stuff like that in the sea of Hentai games.

Does anyone have any concrete suggestions? It would be a huge help. And you'll be helping kids who would otherwise have to do boring workbook exercises!

Depending on how old the students are, games by "Humongous Entertainment" may work. Putt Putt, Freddy Fish, Pajama Sam, Spy Fox are various series of adventure games aimed at young kids with simple puzzles and random things to find on screen.

I believe some of them are on Steam, though they may be aimed below the age you're dealing with. Eh, they're fun and light hearted.

Going through another game I played in Primary School, "The Logical Adventure of the Zoombinis" was fun but is more focused on logic puzzles then language.

Recommend me some good strategy games, please. Preferably real-time, but I'm not picky.

Man, I learned English and some math from the Treasure Mountain games way back when. Treasure Mountain I would teach you adjectives, like you had to look for a round tree, with apples, stuff like that. Check out a lot of the old Super Solvers games, they were both fun and educational! I'm not really sure of anything more modern, sorry!

Recommend me some good strategy games, please. Preferably real-time, but I'm not picky.

My personal favourite strategy games are, in no particular order, "Age of Empires: Rise of Rome", "Populous 3: The Beginning", "Company of Heroes 1", "Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion", "Dawn of War 1 and 2", "Total Annihilation: Kingdoms", and "Red Alert 3".

I prefer slower paced strategy games, as I tend to turtle and build up a large force to wipe the map clean in one go. All of these are real time.

I'll throw in "Rise of Nations" as well. I've always preferred that one over "Empire Earth" which I've found a bit too slow for my likings. I think maybe the default resource gather speed is too low.
