Class-less/Level-less 3.5 D&D Character Gen
« on: December 17, 2013, 07:01:13 pm »

I'd like to first start off by saying that this in no way will lead to an actual Campaign, this is merely a test to see if a viable character can be formed in such a setting.

The basic premise is this;

I the "DM" ask you a series of questions, and you as the player answer them to the best of your ability, I may throw in suggestions now and again but for the most part you are in control of your characters destiny.  There is no dice rolling during character gen, everyone starts off the same, and your choices shape your character.

As the DM I will always try to give everything you do an advantage, and if I can't *such as you deciding you want to go blind at a young age* I will award you fate points, which can be used to bend things in your favor if only in minor ways.

Example of fate points being used appropriately:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Example of fate points being used moronicly:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Obviously I will be bending quite a few rules during character gen.  You're starting character will be much more powerful then a level 1 character but in no way will be perfectly min-maxed either, in fact he might be rubbish, but that's not the point.  The point is to make a believable character with an actual history, this is part character building part world building.  I don't have a script or flow chart made though I do have enough idea of what kind of questions I wish to ask, but most questions will stem from your answers.

As some of you are aware, I'm terrible at explaining things, so instead let's just jump right in; first question.

What is is your race, and who are your parents?

Let's stick to standard player's hand book races for sanity's sake.

Oh, huh. This seems neat. neater than looking at a bunch of pages and numbers and being confused before writing the whole thing off anyway.

Um. Seeing as I have no knowledge of any actual DnD mechanics, let's go with dwarf.

And... How about a blacksmith mother and... are runesmiths things? Is that a thing that is? If not let it be some sort of drunken wizard/enchanter/artificer thing for a father.

Oh, huh. This seems handy.

Um. Seeing as I have no knowledge of any actual DnD mechanics, let's go with dwarf.

If your hoping to learn how to make one, I hate to break it to you but this is experimental and in no way legal... well rule wise.

I used a poor choice of words and have edited before you even posted that.

A Dwarf born into possibly a modestly wealthy family, I have more questions but for now let's make sure no one else has any ideas *but knowing this forum a dwarfs a shoe in*

+1

Garbledwords is a respected family name, traced back generations. Our family has often been smiths - not the best, but good enough.

I'm a human. I was born to a pair of leatherworkers, Joseph and Aria Tanner.

Alright looks like your a dwarf.

+2 Constitution
-2 Charisma
(all the normal other dwarf stuff as well)

Now while your race may not be as diverse as humans, there's still one thing that makes you slightly different then the other dwarves.  What ability would you say your dwarf excels in and which is he/she lacking.  You may choose to be run of the mill of course, also you may only choose 2 abilities to modify.

+1 fate point *achievement unlocked, started the game*

I'll let someone else field this for now cause I have no idea.

I am kinda aiming for some sort of wizardly magical artifact generator type guy though.

It should be noted that d&d calls attribute scores, ability scores.

Your choices are

Strength
Constitution
Dexterity
Intelligence
Wisdom
Charisma

Oh, right.

Well lets take an excess of intelligence and dump wisdom because that sounds exactly like the kind of mad techno science wizard we're trying to make here.
