Yeah, it's not the most intuitive piece of software around! Then again, neither are the BT rules :D You should join the group and play some with us at some point!

Might give it a shot. But I'm not sure what mechs I'd use.

What Era's does megamek cover? I'm partial to Dark Age Mechs and Old SLDF Mechs, personally.

I honestly don't know. I'm convinced it has most mechs probably, including Agromechs!

As for the mechs, you can tell it to create random armies of mechs from specific eras/factions, etc, if I remember correctly. You don't actually have to worry about that!

If I made a large army, would I be able to use parts of it in smaller games?

AFAIK it has every single grounf combat related rule and errata and many fan made optional rules - fully customazible. It also has every single or nearly unit from primitives to 3145 and lots of non-canon ones from video games or elsewhere. The 3 superheavies and some solaris meks are missing.

Theres also the RATs for army creation and as it has all maps(and a map editor and random map generator!) you can play it precisely like you would pkay a game of tabletop. It even writes everything down in a log file that you can open and read later in web browser. Theres also a campaign management program included(mekHQ) and you can create custom units.

I manage to try a battle with a bot, and I suck, but I guess I'll learn eventually.

Anyone want to do a lets play of this?

I figure what we could do is have three teams of five players each. One member of each team documents his matches and makes mention of the other players actions.

It could be a story of three successor states fighting over the same planet. Would make a really interesting narrative.

So even games with just 3 players take about an hour. 15 players would probably be impossible! Or are you thinking a league type thing?

Sorta. Battles would be at most 2-3 people MAX. I'm thinking most battles would be 1v1m and everyone would start with a set battle value.

Once you lose a unit, it's gone forever, no replacements. Lets attrition take its toll.

Have you joined the Bay 12 Battletech Steam group yet?

I'd be interested in a lets play but I believe the 2 on 2 format works the best. Players dont need to roll the dice or see rulebooks during play which speeds the game up considerably, but say a 2-player 12 vs. 12 battle still likely takes at least from an hour and a half to three hours, depending on terrain and map size/deployment areas.

My personal favorite eras are Jihad and Civil War as I think the different factions are the most different in them. Before 3050 or so all IS factions are more or less the same and 3085+ they all share the same tech, just field them in different numbers. I really like the time in between when each faction favors certain kinds of units or unit designs and theres lots of units, weapons, equipment etc. tech that may only have 1 or 2 users, such as c3(DC, FedSun), c3i(WoB), non-standard gausses(FWL, WoB, Lyran), targeting computer(Lyran and FedSun), stealth armor(CapCon). light engine(Lyran), MML(WoB, FWL), X-Pulse(WoB, FedSun), VSPL(WoB), MRM(DC) or TSM and mines(CapCon).

Well, I'm just making the proposal right now.

I'll join the group later today.

As for what era, I figure it would be best to let the players vote.

So I'm trying to get this running, but the Java is having a fit with it.

OSX 10.6 -java version "1.6.0_65"

From the Console I get this error message.

java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: megamek/Megamek : Unsupported major.minor version 51.0
