Right then. Let's search those ruined mattresses, then downstairs.

+1, could use some of girls water to wash ourselves, might leave us deprived later when we need to drink though.

Let's just explore every room until we find something dangerous or especially interesting, then go back and loot once we have descriptions of everything. This is taking ages.

Think the box counts as an interesting find, it is still locked and was found on the floor so it is one of the few unraided spots that will carry some sort of loot worth the effort of a few updates worth of searching. Plus the note that everything is quiet makes me think that will change so we should loot while we can. Would rather we search now so we don't have to backtrack later.

Everyone has considered using the drinking water to wash up with. You're welcome to do it if you want, but the women won't. You haven't seen any other sources of water, and dropping the torch in the well didn't result in a splash, so provisions are limited.

You all split up and search the mattresses and bedding. You find a few keepsakes and worthless items, like an archer's leather finger-guard, a couple ceramic mugs, a very narrow-toed leather boot, some stray playing cards.

Heading down the steep stairs, there's a stout wooden hatch that would be closed to seal the stairway. It's in usable condition and currently latched open. You peer down into the ground floor. There's a rectangle of light from the front door and cold wind blows in. There are more bunks down there but only in the back half of the room; the front half is covered with nailed-together debris that has been splintered and scattered around the room. The bunks in the back half are shoved around and mattresses tattered like above.

The compound is arranged like this, with descriptions you can tell from the outside, or a more detailed italicized description if you've explored it:

                                            [North, overlooks bridge]

                                Store             Guard Tower           Open Space

[West, overlooks cliff]    Stable                    Well                    Entrance Gate    [East, down to road]

                                Smithy Shed          Lodge              Cottage

                                                    [South]

You're in the guard tower, lower floor. There's a doorway south to outside, and narrow stairs up.

The area is quiet.

Claire, Charlotte, and Pearl are here. Everyone is completely covered in blood, and Pearl is also caked with black coal dust.

Examine stray playing cards, do they match our current pack of cards, if so take them. Ask Claire if she wants the finger guard. Edit: Check inside boot for potential valuables, worked last time.

(Been a couple days since input and your post isn't crazy, so I'm breakin' dem rules and updating.)

You check out the playing cards scattered on the floor. They're very faded, commemorative Fair playing cards, and you only find a dozen. You never examined your deck of cards, but no they don't match: your cards are beautifully-illustrated Tarot cards with a snake motif, and you have a complete set.

Claire has gloves, so she doesn't generally use a finger-guard. But she nods her thanks and takes it just in case.

You check out the boot. It's a tooled leather boot with very narrow toes. Looks really uncomfortable. A thorough search doesn't reveal any hidden stuff.

Pearl really likes the boot. She spends some time searching the room for the other one but comes up empty.

You're starting to get hungry and thirsty. It's about an hour until the party will need to stop for a break and eat lunch.

At some point your Handful of Bugs completely escaped.

The compound is arranged like this, with descriptions you can tell from the outside, or a more detailed italicized description if you've explored it:

                                            [North, overlooks bridge]

                                Store             Guard Tower           Open Space

[West, overlooks cliff]    Stable                    Well                    Entrance Gate    [East, down to road]

                                Smithy Shed          Lodge              Cottage

                                                    [South]

You're in the guard tower, lower floor. There's a doorway south to outside, and narrow stairs up.

Might as well move on to the cottage then.

Indeed. Also, those tarot cards are rather interesting now. Do any of our friends know how to use them?

+1 to the tarot inquiry and moving on, take the locked box with us?
Check out the open space if nothing comes from the cottage trip, might be something that isn't apparent from our current distance.

I doubt that a reading of the cards would help us right now, we should instead continue searching the land, to not waste time.
Maybe if we are home we could ask the tarot cards a question.

+1 to above. we cannot be sidetracked by the less-important things. if the cottage turs up devoid of gremlins, we should leave the compound.

Taking the metal cabinet is not really an option. All four of you could lift it up and wrestle it over to the store and down those stairs and out the front door, but then all four of you would be carrying this thing along while you adventure. If you absolutely needed to you could.

The group heads outside. You ask about the Tarot cards.

Pearl does Tarot readings, but she explains it's more of a trick. "The meanings associated with the cards are vague and apply to general human nature. The reader spots when the mark has an emotional response to something and then she talks more about that. She also asks a lot of questions to get information from the mark, in ways that don't stand out in the mark's mind when he remembers the experience later. Also, people tend to remember the "hits" and forget all the "misses"." Pearl laughs and hands you back your Ocarina Necklace that she somehow pickpocketed just now. "It's not magic."

The sun is up in the sky, and some birds wheel high above in the clear blue.

The open space next to the guard tower has a couple moss-covered wooden troughs, some posts driven into the ground, and the remains of three awnings. You spot a wagon wheel embedded in the gently-sloping dirt that has accumulated from the decaying fallen leaves of many autumns.

The cottage has a single window, right next to the eastern gate. It's made of stacked fieldstone with only bits of mortar remaining. The doorway and window were boarded up and then torn apart, the pieces landing inside the cottage on the wood-plank floor. There's a blanket that's been shredded and the pieces carried all over, and a leather backpack that's been ripped open and its contents scattered. There are several large pieces of branches. Overall, everything is broken and shoved up against the walls.

Several arrows are stuck in the chinks in the stone wall inside the cottage and in the beams of the ceiling.

A golden gleam catches your eye, and now that you look there are dozens of gold coins scattered around amid the debris.

The compound is arranged like this, with descriptions you can tell from the outside, or a more detailed italicized description if you've explored it:

                                            [North, overlooks bridge]

                                Store             Guard Tower           Open Space

[West, overlooks cliff]    Stable                    Well                    Entrance Gate    [East, down to road]

                                Smithy Shed          Lodge              Cottage

                                                    [South]

Gather the gold.

If it is enough to buy magic and you can make it to Nah's place by nightfall, leave the compound and head that way.

If it isn't enough, or night is too close at hand, find a defensible position within the compound, such as the second story of the barn, to spend the night.

gathering the gold would be a good idea. The arrows might also be useful too. it is not too late to keep on looking for the gremlins
