No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

Before I blow 30 bucks on this, is it really worth the purchase? (If I do this it'll basically be my only real purchase of the month)

Although you seem sold, I'd second that it's worth a buy. Still a bit rough around the edges (especially with the morale system) but its really good fun. More than that, the dev seems keen to keep improving it, and the mods allow for a lot of interesting additions.

Right off the bat, I disabled ED-MortarAmmo because I plan to use lots of mortars to level mountains and try to get rid of that annoying Overhead Mountain. Also, T-ExpandedCrops removes vanilla RawBerries and that makes it conflict with SimpleMedicineCraft (you can edit the recipe to use RawStrawberries instead. A better solution would be to ask the maker of Expanded Crops to just reskin the RawBerries instead).

I also didn't install TechTreeMinami because it would probably break a lot of mods.

EDIT: In fact, I don't recommend these at all:
-T-ExpandedCloth: this merely makes making cloth harder, by adding an unnecessary step from cotton (remember when making planks was removed? busywork just for its own sake)
-T-ExpandedCrops: as mentioned above, breaks compatibility. Also no real point in having more crops if they don't make any difference in making meals.

Read the mod documentation carefully when you get stuck. Some things aren't very intuitive, but generally, it's a lot of fun.

Ah, TTM, not fully updated to the new alpha yet, since it is in part a compilation of other mods.  It does qualify as an overhaul since it locks everything up behind research. 
Also, the zombie mod works with TTM.

RimWorld is kinda equivalent to Prison Architect when it comes to updating right now.  Does it monthly, but, it is lagging way behind, since it only recently picked up.  (I'm pretty sure I've been sitting on RimWorld for at least a year before it started going at the monthly updates, but then I tend to put in money and forget about it when it comes to kickstarting or whatever early buying thing after it goes off the B12 radar.)

It's basically a very polished alpha. Very playable (and the bits that are in work well), but certainly not feature complete.

I don't think it was ever like that, for sure not with games.

I think this is a generalization made from a limited set of experiences. Most users didn't apply patches or updates before always-on internet became common. Fifteen years ago, if you didn't do a real beta test you were taking a massive gamble with your sales and your reputation.
