The last forum game I entered I ran against a brick wall in terms of inspiration. Anything you people use to inspire your characters, then?

New characters. Always new characters.

Do you decide 'Oh, today I'll make a spellcaster, etc' or is it completely random? Relative to the RP you're joining, of course.

It really depends for me. I've always really loved roleplaying, and even my enjoyment of both writing and acting comes in large part from that. I like stepping into a new role, and tend to think in terms of "what's something I havn't tried before? What spin can I put on an archetype?"

Interview your character. Steal parts from other stories *cough Vlad Lamora cough cough*. Find a theme song.

Do something you haven't before. Do something you have done before, but make it different (weaker, maybe.)

I tend to make up my characters on the spot... but I look back and find that they often have similarities here or there. Well, a few anyways. I make the characters according to the backround I give them and their psychology from there, along with what universe they're in. If I get the chance, I'll also, often take the role needed by the team to round them out.

But I just CAN'T play an evil guy. I can barely play a douche XD.

My characters tend to be based off of media I'm watching/listening to at the time of their creation, which is why they're drug pushers and gangsters so often.

I usually don't give them too much solidified of a background story, as that makes their character evolution smoother as the RPG goes on. One of the biggest examples of that process would be Elizas in the Eisenstein Roulette game. At first his character was "Evil mastermind sociopath guy" which eventually led him to becoming a nymphomaniac Vocaloid princess.

Because trying to stuff Fate/Whatever's engrish and the title of a 17th century book on statecraft into Pokemon syntax tends to make the content incomprehensible.

There are a number of different factors. Sometimes I use character themes, personalities, goals or what-have-you that I've come up with, thought "this would be fun to play" but just not had a suitable RP to play them in yet. Other times I'm struck by the opportunity the game setting gives to play something that I usually wouldn't or that has potential, like, say, designing a character for an aquatic or bard-focused game.  Then sometimes I take a couple of loose bits of inspiration from somewhere else, smash them together and build something new on it: for instance, a character for an upcoming game was built around the name of an MMO healer, the name of a castle from a book, and a very, very loose interpretation of what the two do.
It depends on things like my mood, what I've been reading, listening to, watching or playing recently, if Inspiration hits me, the built-in constraints of the game... A lot of things, really.

Sure it can. Unexpected stuff happening is a wonderful part of RPing in general. Surely you've seen those "what I made, what the GM saw, what I played" pics?

Dammit I seemed to be either devoid of the writing skills or at the wrong timezone to be a even marginally passable host.
