I try to make unique characters for my roleplays, I don't like having just one PC I modify a bit. I occasionally use my pool of characters I like playing, however, and I usually only make unique characters for RPs I think are going to last.

To actually make a discussion, what would you guys value most to make an interesting PC in a forum game? Do you try to make each one unique or have one character you modify to fit each game?
For me, it depends. I have my Joe Bridger archetype, which can be used to create a good character for a less in-depth game, or can be fit into a more serious game, as it's essentially a collection of attributes that can be recombined. When I decide to, I create other characters for specific games simply to try other styles.

I just kind of tend to have one character for free form games and a pool of archetypes of other types of RP.

I rarely use the same character twice- I try to create something different for each game I join.
Perhaps a lot of my characters still end up sharing some broad similarities, but I try to mix it up. I don't really join enough games these days for it to really be an issue, anyway.

New characters. Always new characters.

The majority of the time I use new characters, but I have a favorite villain or two that I like to transfer to new universes on occasion.
I was guilty of this once upon a time, as i'm sure most young roleplayer have been, but Mary Sue characters are possibly one of the greatest hindrances to good roleplay ever.
I'm still trying to figure out a polite way to tell someone their character is just... too much.

Here's a good phrase: "Turn it down a bit".

Sue killing people casually? "Could you turn down the murder a bit?" Sue having extremely long descriptions of how awesome she is? "Could you turn down the description a bit?"

I always have the niggling feeling my characters are too Sue-ish. I try to avoid using blatantly Sue stuff, though so far I haven't got anyone complaining. Hopefully.

My first character was a bit grim and 'grr angry all the time'-ish. I've learnt since then, and look back upon him with shame. If Tempus Fugit was ever restarted I'd probably want to change his personality dramatically.

There's nothing wrong with a well-played srsbsns character. I've had some hilarious times playing as such characters.

Hey, Characters like that have their place y'know? As long as your character isn't a one-trick pony you should be good. Angry and serious characters can somewhat paradoxically be used for some solid comic relief too.

Yep. Especially ones who believe themselves to be better than they actually are.

It depends. I have a few premade characters (read: like, a dozen) that I can stick into any given situation. Recycling, if you will.

I prefer to get some ideas, slap 'em together, and let it see how it goes from there, though.

The last forum game I entered I ran against a brick wall in terms of inspiration. Anything you people use to inspire your characters, then?

New characters. Always new characters.

Do you decide 'Oh, today I'll make a spellcaster, etc' or is it completely random? Relative to the RP you're joining, of course.
