Speaking of that book, Leo was currently leaning against a wall of the outpost and reading it.

Fezz looked at his hand for a second with amused bemusement after Candy's interesting handshake, before withdrawing it. The scholar didn't correct the pink-haired man's attempt at his last name either, not many can say it right the first time.

"Pleasure to meet you as well, Candy." The historian's brow furrowed as he looked at nothing in particular, scratching his chin in thought. "Hm... Divola? I feel like I've heard that name before... Tip of my tongue... You related to anyone with a sort of fame? I'm afraid I can't rightly recall where I've heard that name before."

Candy winced at the mention of relatives.

: "...maybe. My dad served in a royal court, I think, and my brothers took up the sword... it's hard to get good swords as common folk, I hear! We were pretty well off when I ran away."

Tacey, for her part, stuck close to the border post.  She didn't have any need to go into town, and the masked girl had gone out on patrol with Leymont.  She wasn't sure if she trusted either of them to do a good job of it, but right now, she needed to take care of Creidhne after the hard ride to first get away, then return to battle.  Heading to the stables with him, she got him out of his reins and saddle, patted him down with a stable rubber, then began to check him over for injury.

Suddenly, Irene clapped her hands and moved back toward the gate. The neighing and stomping of many horses, coming from the east, explained the situation before Irene even spoke.

"Mireosian troops are coming." She said just to confirm what they hear.

The entire batallion of cavaliers, bearing dark orange and red markings of Mireos army stopped right at the road, near the mercenaries. Irene moved forward as the captain of the batallion slid from his horse.

"Officer, the guardpost have been re-taken. No need to bear such rough face." The captain stopped in his tracks, and then looked at Irene curiously.

"Why, those are great news, but who you might be, young lady?"

"Oh, it's hard to recognize me in this attire." Irene fished for something inside her armor and then handed him a small signet. The captain looked at the tiny words engraved around the band, then gasped and took off his helmet, showing his sweat-glued golden hair.

"Lady Matilda! Apologies! I did not know! Soldiers, bow before Duke's daughter!" The cavaliers hastily began to get off their horses and knelt behind their captain. Irene/Matilda looked at them, and then turned toward the mercenaries.

"I'm sorry that I wasn't honest with you from the beginning. I wasn't sure if you're trustworthy mercenaries or will you try to cut my throat at first occassion. And as you can guess, my 'friends' are Duke and officials of the Duchy. I hope you're not worried about your pay anymore?"

Grifen attempted to hide behind Fezz as "Irene" revealed her true identity.

: "Oh my. I can't believe I called a Duchess 'boss lady' to her face..."

I would rather have known the truth beforehand, but as far as I can see, this does not change our arrangement.

You really can both sig it.
But... That would break the laws of sigging! We can't have everyone running around with the same quotes. IT MAKES THEM UNFUNNY FASTER!

"No, not yet. You will have more than enough time to ask questions and seek answers when we get to Mirr, to my father."

"We will gladly escort you and your friends, m'lady!" Matilda shook her head.

"It's not really necessary, but... I guess few horsemen won't hurt. There's lots of people without a mount in this group, so it will be faster if they will be carried." She looked at mercenaries.

"But I think they would like a night at the nearby inn first." Matilda watched as the soldiers put the flag of Mireos back on the outpost's gate, whilst some other soldiers prepared their horses to carry extra weight.

@Candy

Fezz realized that this wasn't entirely a comfortable topic with Candy, noting the 'were' and the 'ran away' bits. "Ah, I see."

The scholar jumped onto a different topic, not wishing to press an issue that wasn't wanted to be talked about. "I believe you mentioned Candy was your fairy name? An interesting, ah, nomenclature. Mind if I ask what you mean there? I admit to knowing little about Fae and Fair Folk."

@Maible

"I'm afraid I haven't had the chance to read it yet, but it definitely seemed interesting. I'm figuring I'll give it a go once we're back on the road. Oh, almost forgot..." The scholar looked down at his left hand, still clutching his forgotten tome. He stowed it away, fitting well in the expanded case underneath his cloak.

@GM Event

Fezz watched the scene with mild interest, not admittedly too familiar with local officials or nobles. He tended to travel too much for it to matter beyond who he worked for or who he had to pay to get a crack at some ruins on their lands if they happened to realize their worth. Thankfully few did, or he'd be even fewer of coins than he is now.

"That's kind of you. Thank you very much."

Leo was hard to wear down, both physically and mentally, but the long walks through the swamp had started to wear even on him. Some time off his feet would be nice, as well as a chance to get properly clean somewhere.

Leo got Grifen's attention subtly, then indicated Sheila with his eyes. He didn't think she wanted to talk to him right now, or would appreciate him worrying about her so much, but he still thought she could use someone to talk to and if it wasn't going to be him then it ought to be someone else who had shown concern for her after the confrontation with Elenore.
