Call me a nerd, but I like a squad armed mostly with laser weapons just to pay homage to X-Com's predecessor, Laser Squad (even though, ironically, the lasers generally weren't the best weapons for their price point in that game).

The replacement for “Lukeinator” has arrived on base: Hans “Luke” Mubarak, who the squad have appeared to have nicknamed in honour of our fallen Brit. Hans comes from the German branch of the GEU armed forces, and comes with a recommendation to employ him in CQ with a flamethrower.

Dr Branth has finished the analysis of the device found in the throat of the alien. It appears to be some kind of breathing apparatus consisting of a complex interface/seal/filter, a tube leading to the lungs and two highly pressurised spheres which contained a nitrogen/oxygen/methane mix in liquid form. Scarring suggests it is surgically implanted in the alien, and a valve in the back of the neck appears to be used to refill the spheres. The device filters gases that are harmful to the alien out of the atmosphere, allowing a desired mix through and adding missing compounds. Based on the mixture of gases and function of the filter, we have prepared a number of our containment chambers ready to store some live aliens. To this end the lab team have submitted plans for a stun rod weapon that should incapacitate a Taman with ease, and request some lab time to develop these plans. I personally would prefer them to prioritise the alien plasma pistol and gave orders to determine its capabilities with a mind to turning it against its creators.

8th April 2084, 8.15PM

The labs have finished their analysis of the alien plasma thrower. The aptly named “Plasma Pistol” is just that – a weapon designed to throw plasma that can be carried in one hand.  Its basic function is innovative: A “magazine” contains 3 elements – some liquid “plastic” way advanced from what we can produce, a power cell consisting of a small nuclear battery and an advanced capacitor, and a compressed chamber of highly ionized Hydrogen. When fired, the pistol forms a bubble from the plastic, injects it with Hydrogen plasma and releases it at high using a small magnetic pulse. The “blobs” have a range of around 20 meters before the plastic ruptures and the plasma dissipates, and the pistol is very inaccurate, but the plasma itself is devastating – it will burn through flesh to bone depth in an instant, though even a thin layer of clothing dissipates some of the plasma, and our armour does an ok job of coping with the intense heat. The small magazine is capable of only a few shots before draining its reserves of plasma, though we are more than capable of manufacturing our own magazines and pistols, given workshop time. Given the number we have already scavenged from the aliens, there will probably be no need to do this. Applying a little common sense to the design of the weapon suggests that if the aliens have a small pistol like this, there are probably rifle-like equivalents out there which are far scarier.
Regarding its use, the weapon is too bulky to replace our 7.62 mm pistol, and it does not have enough stopping power to replace the SMG or Micro-shotgun, but will render the Machine pistol obsolete. Honker Bonker and  Krevsin have both been assigned one as a secondary weapon, and MaxClone proudly wields one as a primary weapon.

With the weapon now analyzed, I will allow the labs to explore their stun rod idea.

11th April 2084, 7.50AM

The stun rod plans are complete. Basically, it is a cattle prod upgraded using the capacitor design extracted from the plasma pistol to deliver a huge electrical shock. In testing, the squad remarked that “it hurt like fuck”. It does have one massive downside though – the battery pack mounted in the lower shaft renders the device too bulky to be used in one hand, meaning that using one of these devices prevents the use of a firearm in the other. Unless a soldier specifically requests one, and even then only if they can convince me, these devices will not see much combat – an unarmed rush at an alien is tantamount to a suicide mission.
With no other projects on hand, the lab team is now spending time investigating the origin of the alien threat.

13th April 2084, 5.20PM
The 12-hourly updates from Dr Branth’s assistant were getting boring – we had been granted access to all major observation equipment in the Solar System, and there was no sign of any alien activity. No mega-ships, no orbital bases, no planetary surface installations, nothing. Dr Branth estimates that we had 90% of the Solar System observed with no gaps greater than 40 mins. This was both good news and bad news – they apparently were not here – but in that case, where were they, and how were they getting here?

Then, a breakthrough. A routine automatic analysis of a series of MIMIR space telescope images accidentally captured the arrival of an as of yet unobserved gigantic UFO “popping” into existence almost bang on 1,000,000 km from Earth, apparently at rest, before firing up engines heading towards Earth.  There are two scary options: firstly, the highly doubtful possibility that the aliens employ some kind of cloaking technology, but that disagrees with everything else we have seen about them so far, or secondly, that they have access to some kind of FTL ability. Despite this contravening causality and General Relativity, it is the most probable hypothesis, based on the burst of gamma ray radiation and gravitational wave activity that occurred the same time as the megaships appearance. The aliens clearly know something we don’t. I would love to get my hands on one of these ships, but this is an unrealistic goal until we have secured the defence of Earth.

The lab team has been granted some R+R as a reward for some spectacular work recently. The fact that I also have nothing for them to do for now played no part in this decision.

Spoiler: It came from Russia... (click to show/hide)

After days of nothing in the skies, our radar tracking picks up another craft identical to the ones shot down, heading S.W over the Urals. Spaghetti-7 is dispatched to shoot it down, and although his missiles all miss, the aerial laser cannon proves effective in punching fist sized holes in the craft – the engagement takes place over the Caspian Sea, and the wreckage sinks beneath the waves taking its inhabitants to a watery grave.

21st April 2084, 815PM

I am very suspicious of the alien flight plans. Despite all originating from a wide range of directions, they all appear to be heading towards the general direction of our base of operations. Other than the craft that landed in Egypt, none have yet made it into the vicinity of our base, but it is still worrying. Haspen is sent to shoot down this latest contact, the 4th such slow and unarmed ship we have encountered, this time spotted over Sweden heading S.E. The wreckage again crashes into Bulgaria, in a coastal construction site. The dropship is ordered out to investigate the wreckage.

22nd April, 1.50AM
The dropship arrives over the crash site the dead of night. Tiruin puts the ship down just south of the construction site, which is well lit with floodlighting – that’s now 3 night missions in a row with adequate lighting

As soon as the ship touches down and the cargo doors spring open, an alien is visible in an upper floor window overlooking our LZ.

Shadenight misses a shot at it through the window, so EuchreJack drops a smoke grenade to provide the squad with some cover as they disembark. MaxClone and Scriver advance under cover of a car, and the rest of the squad take cover behind the dropship.

With everyone safely off the craft, the squad fans out and cautiously advances, looking for contacts. The Taman in the window vanishes, before reappearing with support. 2, no scratch that, 3 Taman appear – the original one in the window, one on the roof, and one on the ground from the side of the building.

Spoiler: The enemy (click to show/hide)

They open fire with their inaccurate pistols, and Honker Bonker gets his arms showered with hot plasma as their shots thump into the tree he is covering behind.

The one on the roof is dispatched with a round from Shadenight, Scriver exchanges fire with the one on the ground, getting a very nasty torso wound in exchange for a kill which required immediate first aid from MaxClone to prevent him bleeding out. Honker Bonker retreats to cover so Krevsin can tend to his burns, but lacking a med kit he can do little. Fortunately his injuries are not life threatening – Bruce turns back from his advance to offer first aid.

Spoiler: Inavders must die! (click to show/hide)

The alien in the upper floor is too well covered to be killed, so everyone keeps their heads down and waits for it to move...
With his wound treated, Scriver retreats to the dropship to treat Honker Bonker, freeing up Bruce and Krevsin to continue their advance. Shadenight and EuchreJack move up to support MaxClone, but the alien has vanished for a second time... wait, no...

Spoiler:  Alien wave tactics? (click to show/hide)

Tenacious little bastards aren’t they? The alien from the window has called up another of his chums from around the window while heading to the roof. Both harmlessly shoot their plasma over the head of SSG, who is wisely hiding under the tail of the dropship.

EuchreJack exchanges fire with the one on the ground, killing her target but taking a round to the torso in exchange – MaxClone is again called upon to administer life saving treatment.

SSG wounds the alien on the roof, before Shadenight finishes it off.

Spoiler: Cleaning up. (click to show/hide)

Crash site secure.

No losses, but some horrible wounds. Scriver and EuchreJack will be spending some time in the hospital having some quite frankly vomit worthy burns to their torso’s repaired, and Honker Bonker will require some work on his arms before going back on active duty. The bodies of 5 civilians were found in the construction site to the north, with one found cowering in a storage unit.

What was left of the craft is in transit to the storage yard for the lab geeks and engineers to have wet dreams over.

Shadenight is being promoted to Lance-Corporal in recognition of his contribution to the team’s success over the last 2 missions.

Shadenight whistles a horrible, horrible tune as he cleans off his shiny new rank.
Of course, the fact he does that in close proximity of the wounded guys of his squad means nothing, for he wouldn't be as sadistic as to make it clear-as-day who is the better sniper.
He isn't that evil.
He just starts singing at a certain point a deafening song known to the more as 'Il Piave' with his deaf-tone voice.
A nurse coughs politely, trying to convince him to budge or at least stop singing like a demented imbecile.
He sheepishly smiles, and then stops.
"Guess who's a Lance-Corporal now guys?" he brings up his hands to prevent them from talking, "Yeah, I know, I know...I'm awesome that way. Don't worry about me! Poor Luke didn't manage, but he didn't have his awesomeness-shield up like me. So Euchre, Scriver...do you feel the burn of not getting the promotion?"
He snickers. "Sorry for you too Honkie Bonkie," he winks to Honker Bonker, "No masturbating for a while uh."
Chuckling, he stands up and turns to leave. "Don't ya worry! I'll take care of the big bad meanie aliens for ya lot! Just rest and get well soon...I'll wring the rookies in the next mission...so joy to me," he mumbles the last part as he closes the door behind him.

“Do something!” she whispered, trying to keep her sight on all of them at once.
Basileus clapped his hands once. The Forgotten took a step forward, attracted by the sound.
“There, I did something. I clapped. I like clapping,” he said. -The Investigator And The Case Of The Missing Brain.

Tiruin checked the controls twice over and assured herself that the Firebird was in smooth sailing condition--as far as sailing in the air could go with modern technology--and lazily flicked the secondary one-way comm switch. The chatter of the eight crewmen filled the cockpit, most of which was the usual banter, post-mission bravado and such mixed with snarky remarks and humorous overtones. She smiled as the atmosphere took on a serene, jovial tone. Their voices, though the recent firefight was costly, still had the mark of true soldiers in them.

To remember what they were fighting for.

The stars were out in a beautiful, colorful cascade. The sky was dotted with their beauty, radiant and glowing; she liked to represent that to the ever-burning will of survival and life, that no matter how adverse the environment, one would keep on fighting because one can. It was a free-will thing she always kept in her philosophy.

But the lapse in duty was always short, something you would grow accustomed to when you're in humanity's elite of the elite, the green signal flashed--safety was announced. She then heard the port-side door close, possibly manually due to the fact that she didn't press its corresponding switch. But all was well and done for the day, and spending most of the fight in the pilot's room, reporting what went on towards central command was all she wanted to do. Fighting in the real fight was left for aspiring souls.

"Buckle up everyone, we're heading home."

Rocket launchers and thier ammo are REALLY heavy - only veteran troops have the strength to carry one. You can have a grenade launcher and graduate up to one if you make it though :P

April 24th 2084, 2.15AM

The partially intact UFO has been delivered to the secure storage yard. Our scientist and engineers are itching to get their hands on it. I have ordered a full analysis of its systems and structure before they dismantle it to determine its capabilities. The engineers have quickly identified it as an unarmed craft (which explains the lack of return fire) and given it the “Scout” designation.

With 3 troops in the med bay, Rifleman “Cognitive Dissonance” Schultze has been called from the reserve.

Rifleman Schultze is an Austrian “Combat Engineer”, which we all know is simply the name given for a nutter who likes to blow things up.

April 30th 2084, 12.15PM
The initial report on the UFO structure is complete. The main findings are deeply worrying, and outlined below. Remember that this is a small unarmed craft!

Spoiler: UFO analysis... (click to show/hide)

1) The craft is fuelled by milligrams of antimatter. This one craft contained more antimatter than humanity has produced, ever. We simply do not yet have the capability to safely store volumes of antimatter to this scale so it was released in a controlled annihilation reaction. The aliens utilise a novel magnetic storage system armoured and buried deep in the craft – it is probable that in combat our interceptors have ruptured this tank leading to the destruction of the craft. Dr Branth has a proposal worth following up on regarding how we can store antimatter material for our own use based on the damaged alien storage unit, but as of yet I do not see the need to store it – what can we use it for?

2) The craft is powered by two hybrid engine/generators. These engines inject antimatter into a proton chamber, directing the explosive force produced out the rear of the engine to produce thrust – more thrust than any human engine can produce. It needs no air to operate, working just as well in our atmosphere as it does in the hard vacuum of space. The heat produced by the engine is off the scale – a liquid nitrogen cooling system is used by the craft to cool the engine and to generate electrical energy to run the crafts systems. The engines will no doubt require closer inspection in the future.

3) The material the craft is constructed of is remarkably good at absorbing all wavelengths of the EM spectrum. The engines do emit significant amounts of both infra red and gamma radiation, which provides us with the best chance for detecting and tracking these craft.

4) The craft is of a slim un-aerodynamic shape and would probably be difficult to handle in air. This is partially down to no need to generate lift due to the powerful engines, and the sheer weight of the hull material. The material itself seems to be some kind of plastic and metal composite, with a “memory” – when super cooled it contracted into a dense configuration, expanding into a more aerodynamic shape once heated up.  In terms of strength it is only bested by Carbon nanotubes. Dr Branth has put forward a proposal for a full metallurgical analysis of the material.
This basic analysis done, the engineers and scientists have been given the go ahead to analyse the craft in more detail prior to its dismantling.
All three wounded soldiers have been released from hospital. The medical staff have worked wonders in grafting cloned skin and tissue to heal the burns inflicted by the aliens plasma weaponry – neat scars are all that is left as evidence of some nasty wounds. All 3 are lucky to be alive – they probably won’t be so lucky next time.

1st May 2084, Midnight.
Another funding grant has cleared – A drop in funding from last month from 600,000 Cr to 400,000. Apparently a lack of activity over some more distant territories has led certain nations (I am looking at you Oceania and South America) to underestimate the threat they face, though we do now sit on a healthy sum of just over 1,000,000 credits which should serve us well for a while.

5th May 2084, 8.20AM.
The scientists have finished their detailed analysis of the capabilities of the scout UFO, and it has been handed over to the engineers for dismantling. The scientists are now busy working on the exotic hull material. Their findings regarding the scout UFO are outlined below:

Spoiler: Scout UFO (click to show/hide)

1) The craft has a small antimatter tank, small crew capacity (1 pilot, and space for 2 or 3 Taman in a small hold) and no indication of a means of supporting a crew for an extended time. It appears that this craft is not designed for extended missions – simply to drop down from orbit, carry out whatever mission it is assigned, and to head straight back into space.

2) The craft is unarmed and has no ability to mount any kind of modular weapon systems. 4 cells mounted around the nose of the craft seem to house some kind of advanced EM warfare apparatus – these will be worthy of further investigation once removed by the engineers.

3) There is no identifiable communications gear of any kind. This seems to contradict the point of having a scout craft.
Analysis: This craft does appear to be a scout craft used for some kind of intelligence gathering. The lack of comms gear is a curiosity. The craft itself presents no military threat to our forces, but they should still be shot down on sight to limit the enemies intelligence gathering efforts.

6th May 2084, 12.30AM.
We have picked up a new radar contact – this craft is larger and faster than those already shot down. We first pick it up heading NE over Saudi Arabia. I am taking no chances with this one – both Interceptors are scrambled to blow it out of the skies. Our fighters will make contact above the UAE – or perhaps not. As they close, the UFO turns to a direct course straight at our fighters.

Spoiler: New hostile... (click to show/hide)

This simply serves to hasten the new ships demise – the hail of missiles from both fighters send it into the depths of the Red Sea, which is a shame as I would have liked to send this ship to our labs for analysis. Missile camera footage suggests that Haspen landed the fatal shot.

10th May 2084, 4.20AM.

Spoiler: Materials science... (click to show/hide)

Dr Branth’s assistant has submitted the lab analysis of the alien materials obtained from the scout craft. The material is indeed a type of memory alloy, which can have 3 shaped “programmed” into it, and it will take a shape dependant on its temperature, of if a current is flowing through it. It appears that the aliens use this material to alter the configuration of their craft, either at will or through automated systems, depending on situation.
Whilst we now have the ability to work with the alien materials to try some novel projects, we are unable to produce them in large quantities – this would require elements only present on Earth in trace amounts. If we can dismantle a steady stream of craft, we should have enough materials to meet our needs.
Dr Branth has suggested the use of these materials to armour our aircraft – I have approved this project. The materials are far too heavy to use as infantry armour, unfortunately.

15th May 2084, 1230AM.

Technical schematics of an aircraft armour made from the alien alloy have been finished and uploaded to the workshop systems. The labs had some difficulty in getting the material “programmed” to match the shape of our aircraft hulls and to change shape as required, and it is so heavy it will reduce the speed and range of our aircraft by about 10%, but it will provide significantly more protection than our current polymer armours. The armour is expensive to produce, but still more cost effective than a new aircraft and trained pilot. We currently do not have enough material in stock to produce a single full set of armour plates, and production will have to wait until we dismantle several scout craft.
With nothing better for him to do I have allowed Dr Branth to work on the folly project of Antimatter storage.

I bring word from the labs.  Dr. Branth personally wishes to commend the bravery and skill of your pilots and shock troops, but he has asked me to discuss with you the critical need for additional alien aircraft to study and harvest for materials.

While defense is always top priority, and preemptive defense is the most certain defense, we urgently need more of these alien craft to study.  The amount of knowledge that has been gained from that single, nearly destroyed alien craft that was recovered is immense.  Many secrets were obscured by the craft's damage and untold more were completely lost in the portions of the craft which were destroyed.

Dr. Branth urges the Commander to consider carefully where the locations of interception are chosen.  We have the power to observe these alien craft, we can chart their trajectories and we know much of their capacity for speed now.  The points of interception must be calculated so that as many of these craft as possible can be recovered.  The labs do not advocate increased risk of civilian casualties, however when increased casualties are not projected, the point of intersection must be planned to allow recovery of the wreckage.  This is the only possible responsible course of action.  We need these debris.  We need the secrets held within this material, and to have even one alien craft unnecessarily sent to the bottom of the ocean is a dire waste with immeasurable cost to all the people of our planet.

These ships and the technology they contain are the answer to this defense's funding challenges.  Our adaptation of this technology for the dual purposes of protection and peacetime use is essential.  It is vital that the funding of the laboratories be restored to previous levels, and increased as soon as possible.  Further cuts must be avoided at all cost.

There is a final issue Dr. Branth asked me to bring before you, regarding your choice to not provide funding for the storage of antimatter.  While it is true that no current technology exists to make use of the potential and promise of antimatter, it is also a substance prohibitively expensive to produce.  With the very next recovered alien craft, we may gain enough understanding of how this material can be safely harnessed - but will we gain any information from any of these craft as to how it can be produced?  It is most likely that the machinery which creates and contains antimatter will be located at some far distant location, very likely not upon any vehicle of war.  Thus we may never learn these secrets until we ourselves have the means to follow this scourge back to their planet or planets.  For this and a nearly infinite list of other reasons both envisioned and not yet imagined, we need every microgram of antimatter that we can possibly get.  The loss of the antimatter already recovered borders a criminal waste.  Surely you will command the preservation of this immensely valuable resource in the future?  To do so is an act of great strategy and foresight, with wide sweeping positive financial, social, political, and military advantages.

On behalf of Dr. Branth, and the whole scientific community, I thank you for your wise leadership and excellent strategies, which will ensure militiary superiority, scientific advancement, and civilian prosperity.

May 19th 2084, 8.15PM
Dr Branth has finished adapting the alien fuel tanks and prepared a range of schematics we could use to store antimatter fuel, if we so wished. One worrying outcome of his work is the assumption that the Aliens can produce this stuff at will in quantities we can only dream of. With all relevant facilities working flat out, It would take us millions of years to fill one scout fuel tank. If we want antimatter, we will be scavenging it from the aliens. The scientists have been instructed to assist the engineers in dismantling the scout UFO out in the desert.

May 26th 2084, 3AM
From the wreck of the UFO we have salvaged just over one metric ton of alloy (still short of enough to use to produce a set of aircraft armour plates, and one working engine. The engine has been transported to our labs for further analysis.

May 28th 2084, 9PM
A second of the larger UFO’s has been detected above the Arabian Peninsula, heading easterly towards Iran. Again, both interceptors are scrambled to take it down. The projected interception point is just short of the Himalayas. As before, the craft turns directly towards our fighters and is blown out of the sky by a missile barrage – Spaghetti-7 is credited with the kill. The craft crashes into northern Afghanistan – this will be a nice day out for Tiruin and the squad.

May 29th 2084, 3AM

Tiruin pilots the lumbering craft with surprising grace to a clear spot in a wooded area, near to the burning wreckage of the craft. It is just after dawn, but already the sun is over the horizon.  The squad disperse to establish a perimeter around the LZ.
From the LZ, 3 enemies can be seen.

A lightly armed Taman is supported by some kind of hovering robotic craft. Another of these craft is spotted behind there the Firebird has touched down.

MaxClone lobs a grenade at one of the mystery discs, which wobbles in the air but does not otherwise seem harmed. A second grenade causes it to flip over in the air and hit the ground in a sparking mess.

Krevsin launches 2 grenades at the second flying disc, but a tall tree seems to shelter it from most of the effects of the grenade. Bruce lobs an incendiary grenade at the foot of the tree, followed by a frag grenade, and the disc falls into the flames.

Spoiler: Fire can hurt them (click to show/hide)

This leaves the Taman as the sole visible enemy. SSG has a clear shot at the alien and takes it down with a neat shot to the torso.

With the LZ secure, the squad look for cover before advancing on the wreck.

In the distance, a second Taman is spotted, but he is far too far away to kill just yet.

Another of these flying discs is spotted, moving with some speed away from the wreckage.

MaxClone takes a hit from a plasma blast from a light plasma weapon mounted on the hub of the disc, and is bleeding badly from the torso. Cognitive Dissonance lands a direct grenade hit on it to no visible effect. MaxClone follows up with a frags of his own but badly misses.  He follows up with an incendiary grenade to try and slow the alien disc down, and the disc appears to malfunction and crash in the heat. Maxclone retreats to Shadenight for some emergency first aid.

A 4th flying disc is spotted in the distance, near where the Taman was seen moments ago in cover behind some rocks. Nobody has a clear shot on it so we continue the careful advance.

MaxClone reaches relative safety in the hands of Shadenight, who grabs the medpack from the backpack of MaxClone and uses it to staunch some of the bleeding from his torso. Whilst he is not out of the woods yet, he is not in imminent danger of death.

The careful advance allows us to spot and begin to encircle the remaining flying disc – no sign of that second Taman though...
The flying disc pops itself up on top of a rock... misses a long range potshot at the prone form of MaxClone...

... and Luke dispatches it with a short burst from his flamethrower. The hunt is on for the remaining Taman.

SSG spots it, hiding out in a shack in the distance.  A long range shot keeps its head down as the rest of the squad close in on it, using the large rocks as cover.

Honker Bonker uses an incendiary grenade to set the only exit to the building on fire...

Which drive the alien to a window, where it takes pointless pot shots at SSG, who returns with a missed shot of his own. Shadenight also misses as his shot thunks into the window frame. The other squad members are almost upon the alien...

Krevsin however has other ideas and simply fires a grenade through the window, blowing the Taman into small blue and red meaty chunks.

Area clear.

Well, we have secured our second form of UFO which no doubt will offer us further insights. It is en route to the storage yard. MaxClone is alive, just. Those hovering discs are fast and hard to kill, but their weapon is nothing different to the plasma pistols wielded by the Taman soldiers.
Dr Branth has been given the smouldering wreckage of the alien robots for investigation. For some reason the soldiers have given it the name “Hovernet”.
