Krevsin's letter home

Dear mum.

I hope you are doing well. I am doing okay here in [CLASSIFIED], the food is [CLASSIFIED] and [CLASSIFIED] are [CLASSIFIED]. i have to say, though, this assignment is quite different to what i was expecting, and they let me use [CLASSIFIED] in combat, which is nice because it causes big explosions, which can kill many [CLASSIFIED]. Oh, and i forgot to mention that sooner: [CLASSIFIED] are real! They are [CLASSIFIED] as I'm writing this, and we are [CLASSIFIED], so failing would quite probably be bad for [CLASSIFIED]. I guess uncle Devon wasn't crazy after all!

Thanks for the package, me and the [CLASSIFIED] hadthe cookies down in the [CLASSIFIED] after lunch. The [CLASSIFIED] said they were delicious.

Lots of love,
Krevsin.

I think that Honker is secretly a pacifist, that explains why he can't kill anyone :P

Krevsin however has other ideas and simply fires a grenade through the window, blowing the Taman into small blue and red meaty chunks.

Nice shot, my grenadiers usually kill themselves when trying to shoot through a window :P

What's the difficulty level?

Very hard (hence the continual sniper misses from mid range), with a few custom elements (as in starting base) to make it more interesting from the word go. We are only 4 missions in and already the enemy is bringing out its second species and second UFO class.

The grenade shot was halla lucky - flying higher than anticipated, clean through the window blowing up as it hit the alien square in the chest.

Despite the torso burns, this is pretty awesome. Sorry for the lack of input, but I'd just be making kaboom noises anyway.

In recognition of his bravery and/or stupidity in engaging the Hovernet whilst severely wounded, MaxClone Alpha has been promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal. I hope he enjoys polishing his new badge while having his abdominal muscles re-grown in the medbay.

As per Dr Branth’s request we have begun the construction of an antimatter storage facility – he speaks sense when emphasising the value of this material given our current ability to produce it. I have also ordered the construction of a laser battery and a laser to mount in it to offer increased protection in the event of any UFO’s passing a little too close for comfort.

The antimatter storage unit will cost a fortune to run (almost 4 times as much as the next most expensive facility – the as of yet unused alien storage chamber), but if we can maintain current funding levels, we should remain in the black - just. Before long, if we can continue to turn a profit we may want to consider establishing a second base.

As for Dr Branth’s request for more UFO’s to work on by avoiding shooting them down over open water – we do not have that luxury. They are faster than our aircraft, meaning unless they can be tempted off course into an engagement we do not get to choose the combat site.

30th May 2084, 22.20

The lab report on the alien propulsion unit is complete. The team has worked out how to control the flow of antimatter to the reaction chamber and now can patch the engine into a human control system. Manufacturing these engines is just within our capabilities – the electromagnets and cooling systems in particular are highly complex. Its not producing them that’s the problem – its flying an aircraft powered by them. Firstly, the engines can produce accelerative forces that would tear apart any human engineered airframe, and secondly, the forces involved could liquefy the organs of a human pilot. The first problem could be overcome with aircraft designs inspired by alien engineering, and any pilots trained to fly them will have to be very careful in order to overcome the second problem. If we can salvage these engines in any meaningful number from the aliens we will not need to manufacture them, saving significant time and money. Now all we need is some way to use them.
Dr Branth is now turning his attention to the Hovernet “corpses”.

31st May 2084, 3.30AM
The larger UFO has made it to the storage yard. Preliminary indications are that is it an up gunned version of the scout. The engineers are itching to dismantle it in order to work in its systems, but not before a thorough assessment of its capabilities has been made.

31st May 2084, 8.20AM

... oh shit. We have a new class of radar contact - it is almost 5 times the size of the larger UFO in storage and moving twice as fast as the scout. The craft is heading SE over Latvia and Estonia. I have no intent on sending our pilots to directly engage a craft of that size – it would be a pointless waste of valuable equipment... oh, and their lives. Instead they are ordered to follow it from a safe distance to see if they can attract its attention and drag it back to our SAM umbrella. Either it ignores the shadowing or does not detect it, and it continues on its merry way over eastern Europe, then Italy, the Med and the Sahara. Haspen reports that the craft suddenly scrubs all speed and lands in a coastal port in Nigeria. I order the fighters to remain on station to provide aerial cover while the dropship is scrambled to make an assault on the large craft. We simply can not affort to let an opportunity to grab a fully intact one of these pass.

Combat log to follow.

Shadenight stands to attention.
"MEN! TONIGHT. WE. DINE. IN. HELL!"
"Really?"
"No, but I was in doubt between this quote and 'We will fight under their plasma shower'. Frankly, I'd rather take dinner over a shower."
A heavy silence settles in the gunship.
"Oh, by the way, since I'm Lance-Corporal, I've got a nice good suggestion for the rookies...Run like hell, stick to cover, and fling grenades. No direct fire, and if things go south evacuate! A dead soldier serves no one but the worms in the grave! And no forging white flags! They're aliens, for all we know of them white is their symbol for reproduction!"

The dropship arrives just as the interceptors need to head home, low on fuel. I really hope this large craft has no aerial picket or the dropship could be in trouble on any return journey.

Coming in low and fast, Tiruin spots aliens on the move near a number of docked barges. In the low and gloomy light 4 aliens can be seen – one on each barge. One Taman, one Hovernet, and two new creatures – some kind of mechanical spider.

Based on the size of the alien craft detected, there is o doubt that there are more aliens out there as of yet unseen. Tiruin swoops in low and the squad disembark before Tiruin dusts off ready to hide from any enemy ships in the area. Unfortunately there is little in the way of cover, so the squad form up behind a cluster of small buildings before beginning the advance.

Spoiler: Its too quiet... (click to show/hide)

It appears the enemy anticipated this move – suddenly we are flanked on both sides by a Hovernet and 2 Taman soldiers. Accurate fire from their plasma weapons wounds SSG (light leg wound) and Scriver (moderate torso wound). Both will need to move away from combat to receive first aid.

Scriver enacts some vengeance on one of the Taman soldiers before heading to a nearby building to await first aid.

SSG misses the second Taman before heading to the shack with Scriver. The squad appears to have lost sight of the flanking Hovernet and those robot spiders.

Shadenight spots the Hovernet hiding in one of the barges, and deftly sends a round through the window and the robots plating, which is left smouldering on the deck of the barge.

With no other viable targets, the squad assumes cover positions along the line of low buildings.

Spoiler: World class hiding (click to show/hide)

Before he can reach the safety of the shed, Scriver takes another glancing hit from a plasma round – he is now bleeding badly from his arms and torso. He breaks off from crawling to the shed, and instead drags his sorry ass to where Bruce is taking cover. Bruce attempts to administer some emergency aid, but he is bleeding very badly and I am not sure he will make it...

Shadenight pops out of cover like some kind of ninja, dropping a Taman who seemed intent on walking across our lines. He is quickly earning a reputation as an ice cold death machine.

Spoiler: I have become Death... (click to show/hide)

A large group of civilians comes sprinting towards the right hand end of our line – something seems to have them spooked. None of the squad speak Nigerian, so no sense can be made of the frantic yelling. Bruce yells an obscenity at them as he continues to try and stop blood leaking out of Scriver’s torso – his med kit is rapidly running out of bio foam to plug the wound.

With no incoming fire, the squad emerge from cover and advance on the barges. Cognitive dissonance spots a Taman taking cover in a nearby cluster of shipping crates...

Spoiler: BOOM (click to show/hide)

.... and drops a grenade at its feet which stun it but do not kill it. It would appear that the aliens are regrouping on the far barges – along with the wounded Taman we can count 3 spiders and another Hovernet. As the smoke from Cognitive Dissonance’s grenade clears, the wounded Taman takes 2 stumbling steps forward and collapses, blood pooling on the floor around it.

Bruce has done all he can for Scriver – Scriver crawls into the shed to take some cover and passes out from all the pain killers in his system. Let’s hope he can hold on until we can get him back to base. Bruce switches his attention to dressing SSG’s leg wounds.

Meanwhile, Shadenight spots a spider making an advance on our lines. He guides Krevsin in dropping a grenade right on it, and it blows apart into shards of sharp metal.

Spoiler: MOAR BOOM (click to show/hide)

The advance is slow, but efficient. We are dispatching enemies and nobody is shooting back – they can’t hit what they can’t see.

Spoiler: Bye bye left foot (click to show/hide)

Scrub that – the Hovernet decides to make an aggressive move, firing a large plasma round at where Krevsin and Luke are covering behind a mooring point. The round hits Luke in the lower leg, making a mess of below his knee. Bruce instructs SSG to go keep an eye on the unconscious Scriver and scurries over to do what he can – Luke will need a replacement foot by the looks of it. Krevsin returns fire, and the disc erupts in flame. We might have 3 of the squad out of action and Bruce busy tending to them, but Krevsin’s accurate fire has allowed Cognitive Dissonance and Honker Bonker to close in on the barges...

Spoiler:  BOOM number three (click to show/hide)

Krevsin lands his third kill of the mission exploding one of the spiders sneaking up on his position.

Spoiler: Boom four! Combo! (click to show/hide)

Honker Bonker and Cognitive dissonance appear to have surrounded the last alien on a barge with their advance...

Spoiler: Shhh! (click to show/hide)

Yelling some kind of mad Russian rant, Honker Bonker finally gets to use his flamethrower in toasting the last spider.

The port is littered with bits of destroyed robot alien. We saved 8 civilians, and suffered 3 wounded, 2 of them serious. One of the civilians speaks broken English, and manages to explain to Bruce that the robot spiders had been eating dockworkers prior to our arrival – hence why they ran at us shit scared. They appear to have no ranged weapons, which is what made this mission so easy, and the only reason half the squad aren’t coming back in body bags – over half the enemy had no ability to hurt us from distance, which Krevsin really took advantage of. What is left of the robot spiders is bundled up to be given to Dr Branth to analyse. The quite frankly massive UFO found outside the dock compound is being transported by train to our storage yard – how we can keep it hidden as it heads the long way around Africa I have no idea. Why the aliens elected to leave the vicinity of thier craft and abandon it is a mystery - could this craft, which is massive on the scale of human craft, be an expendible unit to them? Why are they so obsessed with what humanity gets up to at docks and harbours? Are they looking for something?

Scriver has been promoted to Lance Corporal as a result of his gallantry in dispatching the Taman despite his wounds. Krevsin has also been promoted to Lance Corporal, as if I do not promote him I worry he may blow me up – he seems to be blowing everything else up with ease.
While the dropship makes its way back to base our monthly funding clears – the amount we clear is down another 50% from 400,000 to 200,000 – the antimatter storage unit is eating into our budget already.

"I'm still leading the count kill guys!" Shadenight laughs as he raises a mug of espresso, "Who's an awesome killing terminator of aliens!? Yes! I am! All hail the Shadenight! Boom-Headshot! Ah...who's a good little sniper? Yes, I am! Nobody beats me!"
A recruit whispers to another, "Who 'corrected' his coffee?"
"No one," the other recruit whispers. "I think he's mad."
"Let me tell you of that one time I shot down an alien on a roof..."
"Can we 'correct' his coffee?" the recruit whispers.
"I don't think we can," the other recruit answers.
"And then I was all like 'Don't die on me Max! You're worthless as anything but a meat shield! Survive! Live another day! I need my meat shields!' and so..."
"Please?" the recruit whimpers.
The other sighs...
Just a normal day in the cafeteria.
