"Yeah, that's one thing I can't understand about this whole case. It's like something out of a hashed up storyline.

"I mean, Zombies. Term taken from the Haitian religion. Then changed to our modern day terminology. If they use people--the fungus, that is--to create these professed zombies, then perhaps they also have the same weaknesses the human body has.

"Muscles, nervous tissue, cell damage, trauma and internal hemorrhaging. These cases are we there are so little samples from living infected, the thing..err, 'screws up' the whole body. What I was referencing earlier is that it's just like a simulacrum of disease. It spreads if unchecked, and if we don't know it, the more we get hurt by it."

Rhea took a breath before reviewing the cases a few months prior. Strange details and anomalous substances. It didn't make sense how control and bodily function still occurred with certain lacking parts of the body. Efficient control, even. "Sad thing is, we're experiencing the effects firsthand. Oh right, that reminds me, if anyone has any symptoms or not feeling well in general--moodiness and all that, just report to me."

"I'm not feeling great, but thats just because I haven't had any uhhh " female company " for over a month. You know what us young people are like. "

Robert then smiles playfully at Rhea before turning to get to work.

Follow the others, help Rhea to walk. Keep an eye out for "zombies" and medical supplies.

"Er...Would you mind if I had the sight? I think it might be, y'know, more useful on something like this anyway."

She holds up the pistol.

"I do think we missed some doors down on the first floor, though. Do you, uh..mind if I check those out?

Robert tosses the laser over to Sarah, before returning his attention to the door.

"Sounds like it's just one..."

He motioned to Oleg, who tested the door- it was open, all right. It opened into the unexplored room, as well, which was also a good thing. Oleg waited, then...

"Go!"

The door went sailing open, revealing a single infected. Robert brought his gun around for a strike, but only managed to glance it, letting it retaliate.

The infected opened it's mouth, seemingly more fitting on a shark than a human. Jagged, thorn-like teeth covered the maw of the creature, coming out from even the outside of the mouth. These thorns spiked out randomly around the entire torso, but they were most pronounced in the mouth- all of those jagged, sharp points could tear flesh like a buzzsaw.

Robert instinctively jumped back as it swung it's arm, slamming into the doorway. It screamed once more and charged ahead, Robert retreating out of the doorway as quickly as possible.

The infected kept coming, not giving Robert a chance to swing his Mossberg around to fire. He was able to shield himself from the infected with it, however, but he kept losing ground- the infected, eying the other four, became yet more active.

Oleg, having seen this Infected mutation once before, took immediate action. He took the utility knife in hand and sliced at the infected, causing viscous, black-ish blood to slowly seep outwards where he'd managed to connect. The infected turned, blinded by rage...

*BOOM!*
Ka-chak!
*BOOM!*
Ka-chak!

Robert unloaded two shells directly into the infected's razor-sharp maw, permanently stopping it's rampage.

"Not saying... you made bad choice, Robert, but you never engage those at close range ever again. Next time, we give it room. Next time, we do recon, yes?" Oleg breathed, adrenaline pumping.

Rhea and Sarah looked positively shocked, Rhea the most- she'd gone pale after seeing what an infected could truly be.

"That one could not have been here more than a month or two. If it had been here since the start, we would be fighting much worse." Oleg mused.

Robert stood in silence, heart drumming in his chest like a jackhammer. Witty as he may be, he realized just how close he came to losing life, limb, or both.

---

After a moment to collect themselves, Sarah asked if she could check out the first floor while Robert and Oleg looked about in the all-purpose security outpost. Rhea quietly rocked back and forth occasionally, staring at the now headless infected.

"Rhea! I'm not sure what's in it, but it looks useful! Here, I'll bring it out!" Robert called.

Robert brought a large medical satchel out from the guard room. Rhea opened it, and began sorting the contents.
"H-huge pack..." Rhea stated, shakily.
"Looks like... six boxes of various nonperishables, six water bottles, six small bandage rolls, two bottles of rubbing alcohol, and a small pill-bottle labeled "painkillers- take 1 every 12 hours"."

Robert stayed nearby Rhea, as she put everything back into the large medical satchel. "T-the painkillers... could be useful."
"Take one if you need one, Rhea. No one's going to hold it against you or anything." Robert said.
"N-not yet, at least... Maybe later...

Oleg called from inside the other room.
"I found good things!"

Oleg emerged with a large gun case, as well as a small metal box.
"Robert ever fire an assault rifle? Maybe this will make us all feel safer!"

Oleg opened the two boxes, revealing a Galil complete with custom iron sights, an aiming laser, an underbarrel grenade launcher, and a flash hider complete with two black-lined grenades for the launcher and a flashbang. Inside the other box was 30 assault rifle rounds, perfect for the Galil.

"Our firepower has increased quite heavily with this, right? Looks to be better than what the average guard would have."

"Must be anti-riot... the bullets aren't nonlethal, but the grenades are. Rubberball grenades might have a use though." Robert mused.

Oleg opened the M203 and slid one of the rubberball grenades into it, loaded the Galil, turned on the laser, and looked down the iron sights out the window.

"Very good. These sights built for darkness, too. Sight is easy- line up the glowy bits and fit them in the ring. Laser helps."

Oleg then turned off the laser and set the gun back down. "We test fire later, once it's more safe. Maybe at night."

((Give the new infected a name? _________)) ((You can do this in conversation, I'll keep track.))

"Of course I've used a rifle before, every soldier in the army is trained to use them and whoever had that one knew his guns. Hey does somebody want the shotgun? The rifle will work fine for me but I could use something a little smaller, besides the shotgun is a lot easier to use for somebody who doesn't have much training.

How about we call those things Maws? On account of that thing having had one hell of a mouth.

Where now anyway? I'd say keep heading up and try to find a staff lounge or canteen to grab as much food and water as we can so we have supplies if we have to leave in a hurry then we go up top and secure it so we can get some rest.
"

(( Is it possible for me to teach the others how to use guns since I'm more effective at it? Like giving them demonstrations on how to steady it and aim it without actually using up ammo? ))

Give the shotgun to somebody who wants it, strap the rifle across my back chest.
Continue working my way upstairs assisting Rhea looking for a kitchen or staff lounge to get supplies, pick up any bags I come across on the way.

(( I'm guessing it has the normal strap on it? Also is that 1 clip of 30 plus 1 in the gun? Or just 1 clip? ))

"Maws? Hm. Maws sounds...good actually. In the facility, we called those things Magnum Ingluviem. But we joked around and called them Great Green Sharks. Most infected we called Shrooms, because, you know, that's just us.

Follow everyone around. Protect the team and help Rhea walk if she still can't.

Improvise a crutch or walking stick from the environment nearby.

"Maws..seem ok. Just..let's just sanitize this area. Dispose of the..corpse. It's infected, and should be treated with care--any pathogenic fluids such as blood must be handled..with care.

"Erm, could one of you handle it? I'm not in my best condition..Also, I'm pretty sure there must be some kind of floor plan laid out here in case of emergency. I'll try checking for it."

Try to find maps of this area.

Sarah went back downstairs, to check out the areas left unexplored. Going back out into the hallway, she decides to first check out the other doors in the main hallway. The first room she enters seems to be a very basic storage filled with all sorts of construction materials- exactly like an extremely tiny hardware store. Gathering all the items for easy collection, she tallied 6 lengths of pre-cut PVC piping, three spare wooden planks, three boxes of nails with varying amounts left in them, three peices of torn tarp-like material, three small spools of electrical wire, three D-cell batteries, and a metal crowbar. Taking the crowbar in hand, she continues on to the other rooms.

Leaving the room, she goes on to the next door, entering what must have been a break room. It's sad to see everything in such a broken state, a billiard table with a missing leg, broken microwaves, a dead plant in the corner.

You find four cups of instant ramen that are still good, along with two large band-aids and two small bottles of rubbing alcohol.

You enter a back room connected to the break room, finding restrooms in a state of disrepair. There's another alcohol bottle in the sink, though.

Walking back out into the hall, you walk across to the only door on the other side of the hallway. You open it to hear rushing water, some sort of place to observe the hydroelectric turbines, and more closely, some sort of spill-way that must have been for fish or something. You find a lead pipe and a nine-volt battery, still in it's package. Having nothing left to explore in the main hall, you consider stopping to tell everyone there's a lot more things down here, but you stick around in the hall for a second, and decide against it. So far, you might have a lot of batteries, but nothing other than melee implements weapon-wise. You think there's a few other doors near Reception you haven't opened. All the items you've found have been moved to the Main Hallway for easy collection and stockpiling.

---Meanwhile, F2---

Robert considers making a sling for the larger weapons, namely the new Galil and his Mossberg, and asks about any extra cloth. "Should take maybe two? It's not that hard to secure one to my back or something."

Rhea sets down her small medical satchel, hefting the larger one over her shoulder in it's place, and sets about looking for some kind of crutch. She hopped up after a moment, without saying anything, grabbing a large broom. It was one of those with the large rectanglular head, and she was able to screw off the broom handle and use it like a cane. Gingerly trying it out, she finds she can walk well enough to move about by herself.

"This is... useful. Not ideal, but... what is these days...?"

Neither Oleg nor Robert spoke for a moment.

"W-well, shouldn't we keep going..?"

"Yeah. Maybe one of us should make sure Sarah is OK? Sure, she hasn't screamed, and we'd hear that, but... I'll meet back up with you. I just don't think we should leave anyone alone during the day."

Oleg goes down into the main hall to meet up with Sarah.

---

Robert opens the door on the inside of the guard room, Rhea following along closely behind.

"Huh, some kind of machinery room. Looks like it's just for monitoring, but all the dam turbines seem OK... Quieter than I thought, really."

"Woah... They're a lot larger than I thought. I remember reading stuff about new power sources, and hydroelectric being one of them, but, seeing it up close like this... It's humbling, in a way..."

Rhea half-limped over to the glass pane separating her from the powerful turbines, churning away with the powerful currents generated by the river. Rhea silently watched them, lost in thought.

"Feels like a thing of the past, you know?"

"W-what does?"

"The energy crisis. Not even just that, but political debates... society feels like it's gone now. Not totally, I mean, well..."

"I know what you're saying..." Rhea quietly muses, barely audible over the muffled but ever-present rushing waters.

Rhea speaks up again. "You know... It really did feel like the world was going to end. I'm not overly religious, but... I did pray to whatever higher power. I think everyone did. Watching the patients roll in... some infected, immediately quarantined... and then, in that room just behind us... It's just frightening to think about. I wish I could stop, but it won't leave my mind. The imagery-

Rhea's makeshift cane wobbles underneath her, almost causing her to topple over. She catches herself without putting any pressure on her ankle, but still looks shocked for a moment.

"S-sorry... I should look for a real crutch, or something..."

"You sure you don't want me to help you? It's not any trouble..."

"I should be fine. Just... have to focus a little more on walking than normal."

"Yeah... Hey, just... thinking about it I guess. You said you saw all those people as a doctor when all this started. What was that like? I mean, we've all seen things we don't want to talk about, but... sometimes, you have to."

"I... I really don't... I haven't really told anyone what it was like, those first few days. It was something you should never want anyone to see. It was horrible. The people who weren't immune in the slightest, those that didn't have to die for the fungus to take hold? Those memories haunt me. And whenever I see one of those infected, especially as close as that last one was, I... It's hard to keep going. It really is. The only thing that stopped me from killing myself those few weeks after the start was the thought that I'd turn into one. That maybe enough of my brain would remain viable, and I'd be trapped in it or something. That's why I don't talk about what happened early on."

Rhea shivered slightly, able to stay up on her makeshift cane.

"But you're tough. Probably tougher than any of us combined."

"H-huh?"

"I know that if I saw that, I'd have went crazy a long time ago. I can't speak for the others, and maybe Oleg is pretty tough too, but he didn't have to watch people turning right in front of him. Maybe once, but you had a whole city or so barging in, ready to turn en masse."

"I..."

"You're the kind of person all those recruiters talk about. They always want someone with strength, and everyone thinks they mean being strong mentally and physically, but no one ever thinks about the most important kind, the strength to keep going. You've totally got that."

Rhea slowly made her way to Robert and threw her arms around him.

"This dosen't mean you're g-getting in my pants, but thanks."

((Two notes here. One, I should explain what the "shaken" thing means- whenever someone gets a close call, or an otherwise traumatic experience, they are shaken. This dosen't do anything to most rolls unless you're on the verge of going insane, however, it does heavily affect sleep. Before the conversation, if Rhea were to go to sleep, she'd spend an hour or two tossing about before managing to actually sleep, everyone would have the chance of vague nightmares.

Things that can happen include waking up in the middle of the night, having very fitful sleep, nightmares that decrease the rate at which you calm down (Slows the rate at which you calm down naturally, making it easier for you to freak out), among other things. Right now, you'll all be able to sleep reasonably well, though that's only if nothing else happens like the Maws event.

Secondly, I'm not going to write anything sexual beyond maybe a very leave-it-to-the-readers-to-imagine makeout scene, so don't worry about that. That dosen't mean you can't hint at or go after such things, it just won't happen on camera. Also, if any of you have complaints about where something is headed or the way I'm handling things, shoot me a PM. I won't bite.))
