I decided to try out the expeditions, so I make a couple of gear kits and send someone to raid the frost giants. Nothing happens. Try it a couple more times. Nothing happens. So I shrug and try it a couple hundred more times. A month or so passes, and a squad of frost giants show up. Well it's better than nothing, they go sailing off in an arc, and as my guys are heading back for some post slaughter booze: S-S-Siege, Siegey Siege-Siege. Well... I guess we will be paying the iron price for all that bifrost.

Raiding frost giants has a 20% chance to give this:

Hard to believe that you did it hundrets of times... 5 times should result in a win. The raws are fine, I checked.

Apani: Where did you read about a ogre mayor? Could you post a link? I once had an armless, legless golem mayor in Masterwork. :)

But they cant do labors, the only one accessable to me is fishing, and I made the gremlins for that.

Here is it. http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=63835.0
To get an animal mayor, I have to let him socialize and get social skills, right? My ogress didn't seem to have gained any. But perphaps she just needs somebody of her size to socialize with. I never tried modding. Can you explain me how animals do jobs?

They cant do jobs. A mayor is a elected noble position, just give the CREATURE:OGRE_KOBOLDCAMP the token [CAN_LEARN][INTELLIGENT], thats it. They will socialise, gain social skills and eventually be elected to positions.

That's redundant, [INTELLIGENT] implies [CAN_LEARN].

Pets with the right skill can do idle jobs, jobs that your citizens will do without prompting or workshops. The only idle labours I know of are hunting and fishing, and hunting requires equipment, so pets cannot do it.

Is hauling an idle job? Also, does Mason count as idle when it comes to building walls?

Hauling has no skill, so cannot be activated on pets, and no.
I think the difference is designating something that you want to happen, such as a tree being felled or a wall built, as opposed to allowing something to happen by having the right labours enabled and zones set up.

Reading that topic NW_Kohaku says to have succesfully modded a pet to mine in 2010, so I should give a shot.
EDIT: I modded in the CAN_LEARN, SLOW_LEARNER and GRASSTRAMPLE:20 (shalswars have the same value, mind you) tags they have in vanilla and embarked again, now I'll see how well things go. Why were these vanilla tags taken away from Ogres in first place?

200 times, exactly, used workflow to make the supplies. Still unpacking the loot, 14 more to go, and yanno killing late comers. Then use the supplies gained from the loot, rinse and repeat. So far exactly 60 assorted bifrost items, and 183 bifrost bars, counting those from the dead. Unfortunately some died in the water and it only freezes here for very short time, gonna be hard to loot em. Maybe snow from the weather device will freeze the water?

Now I've run into a CTD problem a couple weeks after and have to find it and fix it, or savescum.

Edit: By nothing happened I meant no bad guys. After rereading you may have thought I meant no loot?

Oh, yes, I thought loot. I had to remove the boulders that cause the enemy sieges, because autosyndrome run those 100% of the time, you would have gotten 200 sieges then.

I fixed it with a workaround in kobold mode, but havent gotten around to do the same in dwarf mode. I felt like the expedition system is a low priority, because atm it is more a proof of concept.

Well I got a few sieges, still using 3c. I was actually a bit disappointed, I read your kobol succession fort after I ran the reactions and was all ready to defend against hundreds of frost giants, and planning what to do with all the bifrost. So far is hasn't been more than 100 frost giants.

Well the kobold camp was the reason I fixed it. I spawned around 400 creatures in ambushes, at the same time. ^^

The frost giant sieges you had were normal attacks, nothing to do with the expedition system. Like I said, it currently does not produce the boulders that trigger the script for it.

PuppetedHarmonized is now entering the winter of its sixth year. Things have finally quieted down after a series of warlock ambushes, one of which claimed the life of the fortress' sole Legendary Hammerdwarf. The fortress is likely safer without him, as he managed to murder two dwarves within fifteen seconds of being accidentally appointed to Captain of the Guard. Hammered an Apostle of Armok to a pulp while she was praying (BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!). Incidentally, this is the longest-running Masterwork fortress I've managed, meaning the longest-running fort with an FPS counter. So far the lowest it's gone is 40-something, but I am postponing "Project Magma Coaster" until my minions stop partying long enough to seal off some unnecessary areas.

We also had a bit of a close call with a Frost Giant Thief. It went after a drow caravan that was unloading its goods, scaring the shit webbing out of their drowspider mounts. Long story short, drow merchants aren't web-avoid and marksdwarves love nothing more than plunging beard-first into webbing. I eventually used dfhack to flood the depot, given that none of my civilians were dwarfly enough to flood it with buckets. This does raise the question of how Drow caravans ever get anywhere, given that they probably get webbed every two hundred feet. Maybe that's why we're still in decent political standing, despite the fact that only one drow caravan ever managed to trade successfully?

The fortress is still waiting on any sort of goblin attack. Sure we had a snatcher or two early on, but we've since had two orc sieges and a warlock siege, and there's nary a gobbo in sight. It's not like we need the xCave Troll Loinclothsx, but the fortress feels empty without goblin prisoners to beat on. Plus, the orcs are usually too smart for the trap corridor. The glassmakers worked hard on that! We even managed to get a gnome ambush, which was just plain depressing. Hopefully we'll see a diplomat soon--for such a technologically advanced and intelligent race, they're not so great at tactics/avoiding axes to the face.
